League of Legends revenues for 2013 total $624 million [UPDATE]

League of Legends came in second in terms of revenue for F2P games, coming in behind South Korean FPS CrossFire.

UPDATE: Following the publication of this story, a representative from Nexon reached out to clarify that their game, Dungeon&Fighter "surpassed the number one game, Crossfire, by a significant amount."

Although they're unable to provide specific revenue figures due to a contract with Tencent, the Nexon representative wrote, "If you were to take the figure stated in the Superdata report as net revenue and apply the industry standard 30% revenue share to the developer (as stated on page 25 of Deutsche Bank analyst Hanjoon Kim’s July 1, 2013 report), that would make the gross revenue for Dungeon&Fighter $1.4bn, exceeding Crossfire by over $450 million. While these are not our internal figures, I believe that this gives a good indication of the size of Dungeon&Fighter."

The original story appears below

League of Legends' revenues for 2013 totaled $624 million, making it the second top free-to-play game in terms of earnings, a report from SuperData reveals.

Coming in at the number one spot is CrossFire, a South Korean free-to-play first-person shooter which brought in $957 million in revenues during 2013. Tencent, which owns a majority stake in League of Legends developer Riot Games, publishes CrossFire as well.

Valve rounded out the top 10 list with Counter-Strike Online, which brought in $121 million, and Team Fortress 2 at the number nine spot bringing in $139 million.

Electronic Art's Star Wars: The Old Republic, which added a free-to-play option in 2012, took the number eight spot with a little more than Team Fortress 2, and less than Blizzard's World of Warcraft, which generated $213 in microtransactions alone (not counting subscription fees).

Last week we also reported that Blizzard was beefing up its microtransaction efforts in World of Warcraft, when it posted a pair of new jobs on its "Strategic Initiatives" team, calling for a director and manager for the company's new "Microtransaction Strategy" unit.

World of Tanks was fourth on the list with $372 million.

Overall, the digital games market in the United States (including social, mobile, DLC, free-to-play, and subscription) grew by 11 percent, reaching a total of $11.7 billion in sales during 2013. Mobile represented the biggest portion of the market with 26 percent, but free-to-play showed the greatest growth, increasing by 45 percent over last year. Meanwhile, revenues from social games dropped by 22 percent and revenues from subscriptions dropped by 21 percent.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Any given champion will trounce certain other champions, that's intentional. It encourages teamwork. It doesn't work when every noob wants to be a DPS class and get kills.

@ggregd @megakick I don't get why do people wanted to be an DPS, Yes, nie damage but if you get caught it then BOOM, dead ... I personally wanted to be aTank/Jungle than anything. And I'm very good at it XD. I love Warwick tanks or malphite,Sejuani and Doctor Mundo !!! I remember the day when they didn't nerfed Mundo Uti and warmog yet. He was like unstoppable, I tanked two tower and 3 players as the same times ! While my team do the rest :3. I got triple kill thought XD.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> ...? LoL is not an MMO, Crossfire is not an MMO. the only 2 games mentioned that are MMO's are WoW (not free2play) and SWTOR (also optional subscription).

LoL and DoTA are the same genre.

I can't believe that TF2 earns more than DoTA 2 ... thats inconceivable.

Same goes for DOTA 2, CS: GO and Team Fortress 2 but unlike LoL, they give you everything you need to compete from the start. You dont need to waste weeks just to unlock playable characters.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well you were the one that started it :P Just saying. And yes, in term of People players and revenue LOL is sky rocket. But don't know about the fun factor yet because i haven't play Dota 2 :D. I personally enjoyed LOL thought :D. My first Moba game ... and probably the last.

Anyways, The next big thing would be path of exile over-thorn Diablo 3. It's the begining my friends :) I can See it :3

However, i don't think Free to play is the future at all XD. Games like PoE, TF2 and PoE can be exceptional but that it for me :P

<< LINK REMOVED >> If you mean "fun factor" where its dumbed down so much that watching a LoL esport match is like watching 5 people bash their headstogether and see who wins then be my guest. just like CoD is the best shooter because of giant hit boxes and killstreaks that do the killing for you... and mcdonalds is just clearly the best food because its fast and cheap and tastes... tollerable.

fun factor... bwhaha.... the only reason you wouldn't find Dota just as fun is because you suck at it.... mainly because.... its harder in ever aspect.

lol @ upgrading every 2 years.

Thanks to the weak hardware in the consoles that is a thing of the distant past. Todays middle-high end PCs will still play every multiplatform game with higher resolution/fps than X1/PS4 in a few years. Just like it was last gen.

The only reason people will still upgrade is because 4k gaming is coming into reach for affordable PC hardware

Something that the PS4/X1 will never be able to do.

and lol @ the "irrelevant" 24 BILLION $ PC gaming market.

"1080 is 1080" the most stupid argument someone can bring up.

A picture of a circle in 1080p is NOT the same as the picture of a ball in 3d with high res textures, shadows etc.

PC versions of games are SCALABLE, and unlike console versions people can chose if they settle with the lowest common denominator, console level graphics, or make use of the much more powerful PC hardware....

i have played plenty of lol and while LoL is marketed as a free to play game, to be fair it is pretty much pay to win. this is because the balance in the game is so that some champs are just worth cash to not be completely stomped everytime someone else has an imba champion. also, the rune system makes this game even more pay to win. i enjoy the gameplay but to be honest, many people has become frustrated that there has always been horrible balance in the game(which leads to very boring competitive matches) and you will be constantly stomped by a bunch of kids who can shelve out a ton more money than you.

i havent played dota 2 though so no idea how it is.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Champion balance isn't amazing in League, but there are dozens of champions that are completely viable and often used. Additionally, champions can be bought with earned currency, not just cash (of the 117 champions, I own 40 that I bought with earned currency, 1 that was bought with the stipend Riot gives when hitting level 10, and 1 that I bought with cash because they were on sale). On top of that, runes can *only* be bought with earned currency and don't make much difference until you get to higher skill caps (where you would have a lot of currency, experience, and personal investment anyway).

Why is WoW on this list? It's the opposite of F2P. Pretty sure they haven't gone LOTR:O or SWTOR yet.

Note that having a hybrid model like SWTOR is fine because you CAN play the game for free and having a sub option is fine, but WoW does not belong on there at all. If I can't play your game for free it's not F2P...simple logic. And no a silly trial does not count.

Crossfire, im a PC gamer since 2004 and didnt even know what that is. Goes to show how many gamers are out there that have nothing to do with the mainstream games like battlefield and batman Arkham and Counter Strike etc.

Like im a huge gamer and ive never even played crossfire.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i played it years ago when i googled free to play shooters, could not spend much on games at the time, i played it and was actually pretty good at it, especially when i was snaking at the same time, made me relaxed :) then i stoped playing it tried it later and was not so good at it or more hacks or just better players there now, also getting older and slower reaction time makes a difference :) but it was cool

Add just enough P2W into the game and people will pay up gladly, add too much P2W people will not play, have no P2W and you will earn less like Valve.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There is no P2W. It's simply a matter of if you're impatient in purchasing some of the champions. Some of the earliest and cheapest champions released are actually very effective. Annie is OP. Ashe has the 2nd highest ADC range. Nasus is, well... Nasus. The list goes on.

Also, Riot temporarily unlocks about a dozen free to play champs, so you have a chance to play as higher priced champs you couldn't otherwise afford.

The champion skins you can purchase are also 100% eye candy only, so they're not needed. That's your judgement call whether you want them or not.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The game certainly is profitable, but the company also isn't putting 624 million into their pockets this year.

They have hundreds of employees and have lots of expenses through running servers and tournaments. Just last year they had one million for the prize of their season 3 tournament. They have a lot more going out than people realize, but they are making a lot of profit still which is why they are so big and have grown so much and continue to do so.

If i hear anyone bitch and moan about how a once awesome single player, story based IP series gets perverted and twisted into microtransaction/DLC monsters by greedy publishers like EA and the like, i will rub their nose into articles like this and blame everyone who thoughtlessly made this business model of game development so profitable by spending far more than a retail cost (eg. $60) on each of these types of games over their lifespan. It's too tempting a business model for publishers to ignore.......until gamers begin to ignore the addiction of "its only $5 here and there" or "but a new character/skin is coming out and i just gotta buy it!!" mentality. Silly, obedient, well trained monkeys.

In LoL Champs can be bought with in-game currency and runes actually can ONLY be bought with in-game currency....

So where are those "many gameplay affecting" - real money purchases you talk about? The only things that can`t be bought with ingame currency are skins/Icons, and those don`t affect the gameplay in any way.

Sure sounds like you don`t know what you are talking about, sorry.
