To celebrate Outbreak Day, Sony is heavily discounting PlayStation 4 title The Last of Us Remastered on the PlayStation Store.

For those not familiar with Outbreak Day, it marks the day on which the Cordyceps Brain Infection reached critical mass in The Last of Us universe.

Essentially, from September 26 onwards, mankind was overcome with a parasitic fungus that brought the human race to the brink of total collapse.

Since the fungus grows on the host while they're still alive, most were fully aware their brain function was being systematically destroyed, slowly transforming them into an irrational and hyper-aggressive mushroom-headed monster.

To commemorate this horrifying fictional milestone in the Earth's history, you'll be able to pick up various The Last of Us and The Last of Us Remastered content for cheap between September 23 and October 7.

The Last of Us Remastered will be available for €19.99/AU$29.95/£15.99. Pricing for other regions has not yet been specified.

Sony has also created a new dynamic theme themed around Outbreak Day. It features the fugal artwork seen in the opening for the game, in addition to music created by Gustavo Santaolalla. The theme will be available for $0.99/€0.99/£0.79.

A new Clicker Statue created by IP Factory/Gaming Heads has also been announced and is available for preorder. A regular version of the figure will be available, as well as an exclusive edition with a gas mask. The item is not yet listed on the retailers website, but we expect it will be soon.

Finally, select The Last of Us items are also on sale on the Naughty Dog shop.

In an interview for PlayStation's Conversation With Creators series, The Last of Us co-director Bruce Straley was asked if Naughty Dog anticipated the game's huge success.

"We thought it was going to tank," he replied. "We thought we were going to ruin the name and image [of Naughty Dog] that's been so heartily built for years with blood, sweat, and tears."

He continued: "We thought we were ruining Naughty Dog's image."

Of course, The Last of Us received widespread critical acclaim. In GameSpot's review of The Last of Us Remastered our reviewer awarded the game 8/10.

"The Last of Us is a great action game that you should play if you haven't already. And if you have played it before, the improvements here aren't so dramatic as to make the game feel like a new experience, but it is definitely one worth revisiting.

"In the world of The Last of Us, as in our own world, love might destroy you, but it's also one of the only things worth fighting for."
