Last Chance: Get This Square Enix RPG Before It's Gone From Steam

Get it before it's gone for good.

If PC is your platform of choice and you're a fan of Square Enix's role-playing games, you might want to pick up The Last Remnant as soon as possible. The publisher says it will discontinue sales of both the digital and physical versions of the PC game on September 4. Anyone who already has a copy will be able to continue playing after that date, which makes acquiring the game now somewhat urgent. Between now and September 4, you can buy The Last Remnant on Steam for $10.

First released in 2008, The Last Remnant follows the story of Rush Sykes, a man on a mission to rescue his kidnapped sister, Irena. Before long, Rush finds himself wrapped up in a much bigger plot that involves mysterious artifacts from antiquity known as Remnants.

Now Playing: Last Chance To Buy This RPG Before Square Enix Removes It From Steam - GS News Update

The game initially launched on Xbox 360, where it was prone to framerate issues, long loading times, and several other problems. Its PC port, which launched in 2009, is "far superior," according to GameSpot's The Last Remnant PC review.

"It features a rich, original fantasy world, obviously crafted with great care and artistry, and it tells a strong, politically charged tale that will keep you glued to the screen. Although somewhat flawed, the battle system is fun to play around with, particularly in the second half when enormous armies go head to head in some dramatic, bloody showdowns."

If that sounds like a game you want in your Steam library, make sure to pick it up before September 4. Square Enix didn't say why it's removing The Last Remnant from circulation, but it's nice to get a heads-up before it vanishes for good.

They did the same thing to Alan Wake. They said it was because some of the music licenses ran out. It might be something similar here too. Probably a legal issue.

Games should always be available unless they are causing the publisher to lose money somehow. Can people who bought it redownload if needed? If so, it's not being taken down due to server space, else that wouldn't be possible. If we can't redownload, that's jacked up, squeenix.

The console version was just terrible when it came out, with tons of technical problems. But the pc version on steam solved almost all of that, and load times are hardly nothing. Saves are better also.

The story, art, and game mechanics are ... well Final Fantasy in quality and scope. Enjoyable game even today.-- on PC though.

Shame this game is being taken off steam, dont know why as it continued to sale well there.

There's zero reason for them to discontinue selling it. It's not license nonsense because they're not pulling the Xbox version.

bad game that nobody cares about. that said, once it is gone from steam, i see no harm in pirating it if there is no other possible way to play it.

I am not joking. This game has auto-save on by default and auto-saved me into a place I could not progress. This was years ago though LOL! It's right after the part you land in a dungeon or jailcell or something. My crew was so weak we couldn't win the next fight even with the best RNG. It was completely unwinnable and I never played the game again.

Is that why their removing it? lol.

To make room for a more expensive remastered-edition-that's-actually-worse, surely.

Its 10 years after, some kind of right (copyright, license, ...) probably worn off and the game isn't worth it anymore. Or maybe the listing on Steam got too expensive in comparison to sales.

It isn't the best game but still fun to play. The vistas were gorgeous for its time, while story and characters fell kinda flat and the battle system was based on luck a bit too much.

This was one of the first square enix RPGs on PC in the modern era. I really wanted to play it, looked nice.

10 years later I finally loaded it up, and it looked extremely dated and didn't properly support widescreen to the point where I ceased wanting to play it.

RIP experiencing the game ever.

Oh yea, I remember hearing about TLR...and also hearing that it was pretty mediocre...and that horrible name for their protagonist.

Don't buy it. It's a bad game.

I bought it for $5, and paid $5 too much.

I loved this game, battles were a highlight once you worked out the battle system.

Not missing much. Couldn't even finish the game. The story was ok, but the battles became too much based in luck. So many times, I lost to a boss simply because I would never get the commands I needed. The game basically chooses your commands for you. You only get to choose from a top level command structure and your characters decide what commands they will perform. Many times a healer party would not have the heal options for many turns, even when other parties have fallen.

Also, I could not get over the constant slow spin of the battle grounds. There is no controls for the camera in battle, so when your setting up commands the battle ground is constantly spinning. It made me nautious.

Is it better to play this on Steam or Xbox? Heard there was a lot of patches released so are both versions more or less similar now?

@lionheartssj1: The PC version was vastly superior to the Xbox version, it was almost a new game with how many changes there were.
