Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning sequel in the works

38 Studios founder Curt Schilling says "Oh yeah" to a follow-up to open-world role-playing game.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning launched just last week, but it appears plans are already in place for a sequel. In an interview on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night (embedded below), 38 Studios founder Curt Schilling revealed that a follow-up to the action role-playing game is happening.

More Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is in the pipeline, according to Schilling.
More Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is in the pipeline, according to Schilling.

Fallon remarked, "I bet there's gonna be a sequel," to which Schilling responded, "Oh yeah."

Schilling went on to say, "[38 Studios] was built to be something that stays around and becomes huge."

In addition to Reckoning, 38 Studios is at work on a massively multiplayer online game currently codenamed Project Copernicus.

Reckoning won praise from reviewers upon launch last week for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but no mention has been made as to whether or not the game will become a franchise.

As of press time, neither Electronic Arts nor Schilling had responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

I feel bad. Its the best combat ever seen in an RPG. But the difficulty almost breaks it and it could be improved in many ways. Its their first game though and its alot of fun.

I hope so. From what I have been told from people who have played this game, it could be a really cool franchise. I just wish my tax check would get here so I can play Reckoning!

@packtop, I couldn't agree more. IMHO, they trashed DA by rushing out a bland sequel. What Kingdoms, a stellar debut game, needs is tweaking, not a new direction just because a sequel can make a quick buck.

The only thing i'm scared with this, is i hope EA won't try to push 38 Studios to make Amalur a yearly release because this isn't the kind of game you can release a sequel each years.

@BLACKWINGS17 Actually I believe Dragon Age was pretty cartoony. Sure, it had gritty battles and SOMEWHAT detailed face motions, but all in all it is not aiming to look real. Dragon Age 2 was even more Cartoonish. Demon's Souls had it's art style to be gritty realism. It didn't need much artstyle anyway. It had atmosphere. LOADS of it. Only Skyrim fails in that department, looking robotic and bland on an artistic side. Comparing it to previous entries, the difference is massive. But it's not suprising, considering the lead creative design of TES moved to Reckoning.

The art style is awesome. It is good to finally see a game that truly embraces fantasy rather than mimic reality. The generic "realistic" approach is bland and boring. Skyrim, Dragon Age, and Demon Souls are all good games with beautiful graphics - but they all lack style.

Praise the Schilling-Rolston-Mcfarlane trinity of the blessed Kingdoms Of Amalur. For verily they bring a colorful palette of happiness to all who seek the rainbow brilliance of life.

I didn't even realize it was the baseball player Curt Schilling until a few hours ago. I thought it was odd the founder of that studio and a baseball player had the same name, never imagined they were the same person. With that said Schilling's has been a gamer for years, which is why I'll take interest in any product 38 studios pushes out there.

Geez guys, give us some time to at least try and finish the first one. :p But yes, a sequel would be very nice- especially as the Faelands (the area you can explore in the game) is only one part of the world of Amalur. Lot of scope for new locations out there etc.

They didn't do all that work just to end the franchise now, but sales is the ultimate determining factor.

@Agent-M I'm not sure why you were downvoted, you were absolutely right. It could have used some polishing, but it was by no stretch a bad game. No game is absolutely perfect.

Lets hope the sequel corrects the problems of its predecessor. Things such as a better written and immersive story-line, expanded combat mechanics, improved skill trees, better music score, and improved art style.

@ Raxyman That just proves what oflow was saying, if an RPG discourages you from playing the role you want, then it's just a PG, in KoAR you can play as a Sorcerer and still be as complete of a badass as the Warrior, but if you want, KoAR let's you combine the two classes. I personally always play as a thief and sometimes I just wish that I had some magic power, and when an RPG lets me have some magical elements to go with my thief and has good gameplay, I'm sold and KoAR lets me do that.

@azureblade89 They could give Blizzard a run for it's money if they stick to their current plan. IIRC they wanted to make a MMO to begin with but realized(after trying to figure out the things that made WoW so popular) that no one cares about your lore if its a brand new MMO, because you have trouble conveying the deep story you need to make people actually care about the world and it's inhabitants within the mechanics of an MMO, but if you establish the world in single-player games first, it's much easier to have lore people care about(look at SWTOR for a great example of this) if they have been exposed to it before hand. Now i dont think the Kingdoms of Amular series will be as popular as Warcraft, but if they can make a couple successful RPGs to establish the world and flesh out some central characters then the MMO will succeed, especially if they can setup themselves up to go toe-to-toe with WoW right around the time Titan(late 2013-early 2014) is released, as they could wind up getting the "rejects" from Titan and still wind up fairly successful.

As long as it isn't rushed out and that EA doesn't poke their nose in and demand that it be 99% multi player with 1% single player in order to continue to lure in those who have no interest in anything that isn't the usual military FPS rehash. I don't mind waiting three or four years or however long they'll need to refine a sequel.

Shoot down that MMO idea right now Mr. Schilling, you really don't want to expand into Blizzard's territory.

Hopefully they'll correct the crappy art style they're using in Amalur. I will give them credit for making a decent action RPG, but they need to learn how to implement better bow mechanics. The autotargetting is frickin horrid.

i dont get these ppl that say KoA is generic and boring. If you actually read the quest dialog its got a decent story, better than Rifts', SWTORs' and Skyrims'. On top of that the game play is fun. unlike Skyrim which you often go oout of your way to avoid tedious fights with mobs because of the boredom. KoA is an awesome game annd the multiclass format is genius. Fantasy games have been needing this forver, especially since all we have is WoW clones for the most part nowadays.

@WTA2k5 Curt is a pretty damn blunt CEO of a game company and possibly the most interactive one with the media/community. It's a habit of his to release these details most likely on accident

@Raeldor No that's not what happended at all and has been mis-published for quite some time at various outlets. 38 studios was founded in 2006 I believe with the intention of making an MMORPG. In 2007 or 2008 THQ was closing down BHG who had been working on a brand-new engine for a Single player RPG for 2 years, unless a buyer was found. Curt had bought them, gave them the basic story, vision and art direction and away they went with KoA:R. The MMO is indeed still in development :)

I'm always glad when a developer stops being coy about whether or not they'll be doing a sequel. For some reason video game developers seem obsessed with making surprise announcements even though it's not at all necessary. If you look at the movie industry, filmmakers often outright say whether or not they'll do a sequel to a movie as soon as they get the box office numbers from its opening weekend.

I remember reading somewhere that this was originally planned to be an MMO, but they scaled it down for the first release. I wouldn't mind betting they're planning an MMO version next. Hopefully they'll improve on the writing and open-world aspect and make it free-to-play, because they're going to have stiff competition from Guild Wars 2. On another note, it was a nice interview. He seemed very modest considering what he's accomplished; good to see.
