Kingdom Hearts II sells 1 million in North America
One million units of Square Enix's second Final Fantasy, Disney fusion sold in North America since its release in March.
The original Kingdom Hearts was released on the PlayStation 2 in September 2002 and featured an unusual combination of characters. Developer Square Enix dipped into its own tank by including some members from the lore of its Final Fantasy series, but it also looked across the Pacific and used some characters from Disney's massive lot. The East-meets-West combination proved profitable, as the game has shipped more than 2.6 million units in North America alone.
Just over a month ago, Square Enix released Kingdom Hearts II for the PS2, which seems well underway to exceed the numbers of its predecessor. The company today announced that the sequel has already sold more than one million copies in North America.
Though the game was released during the last week of March, it managed to be the top seller for the month, selling more than 600,000 copies in just a few days. After its late December 2005 release in Japan, Kingdom Hearts II had similar success in the region, selling more than 1.1 million units through January.
Kingdom Hearts II retails for $49.99 and is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's review.
