Kinect preorders 'very low' - UK retailer

ShopTo calls for Microsoft to finalize motion-sensing peripheral at lower than widely rumored price, says customers aren't biting at current cost.

Microsoft confirmed a November 4 launch for its Kinect motion-sensing camera peripheral at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, but it didn't nail down a price for the device. Despite the lack of official word, US retailers began taking preorders for Kinect at $150, and while Microsoft declined to make the number official, it opened up its own preorders at the same price point. Now one retailer is saying that price is too high, and preorders have suffered as a result.

ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.
ShopTo's CEO says customers aren't exactly clamoring for Kinect.

In an interview with Eurogamer, ShopTo CEO Igor Cipolletta told the site the number of Kinect preorders the retail chain has received is "very low." As for the pricing, ShopTo currently offers the Kinect for €153.75 ($188), while the executive pointed out that a Wii can be had for just a little more. ShopTo's online site is currently sold out of Nintendo's hardware, but the Wii Sports Resort bundle ordinarily sells for €166 ($203).

"It's too high," Cipolletta said of the Kinect price. "We believe that with this current economy it should be around £70 ($105)."

When Kinect arrives, Microsoft expects 15 games to launch alongside the device. First-party offerings include Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, and Kinect Sports. A number of third parties are also on board, developing such titles as EA Sports Active 2, Konami's DanceMasters, and Sega's Sonic Freeriders. Publishers have also promised postlaunch support, such as a Star Wars game from LucasArts, Q?'s Child of Eden, and THQ's UFC Trainer.

They need to bite the bullet and get the price down. Perhaps a steep discount for XBox Live Gold Members or anyone who purchases a new Xbox between now and launch. Microsoft may have great tech here but it's going to be a huge challenge to get enough adoption so that game developers can devote resources. So many platforms pulling now on development teams. Mobile market is exploding, Facebook games and other socials will soon get more dollars... Microsoft needs this in people's hands if they want to have a prayer.

maybe because folks are already thinking 150 is the be all end all price. it is a pending price. no price has been defined yet, even on the microsoft store they say this is not the real price. i may not get kinect but seriously, people need to stop spinning the rumor mill when there is nothing on it. this is kinda like our "cell phones can give you brain cancer" rumor. let it go. if you buy it, you are going to buy it. if not, dont scare folks and say it is going to be 900 bucks and deter others.

It may be neat technology but as a gamer I'm just not interested, multimedia use of Kinect is more appealing to me then the actual games, even then it's still not worth $150 for me. Maybe they'll release something for Kinect that'll convince me down the road. As for now, to many good games coming out to even consider Kinect.

Most people who want motion controls already have the Wii. Most hard core gamers are not too excited about Kinect. Good luck getting the causuals to shell out another 299 (or 199) for the 360 system plus another 150 for Kinect plus however much more for games. The Kinect will go down in history as a flop on the lines of the Virtual Boy and the PSP Go.

@ColdfireTrilogy Obviously if people didn't pre-order this, it wouldn't be $149. Also like someone else stated, if you haven't seen the massive ads on television for the new XBOX for today, ready for tomorrow ads... well damn, you must not watch ANY television. Why do I say this? Maybe in a week total I'll get in 5 hours of TV, if that. I must of seen it at least a dozen or two times already. Also if you are on ANY game site, it's almost everywhere. Even my 56 year old mother has heard about the Kinect. Forgive me if I don't have the exact numbers. I've done a search and couldn't find any "hard" evidence like you so wish for, but reguardless, it will sell a lot more. It's selling for €153.75 (approximately NZ$335), or $149 USD. It's obviously way overpriced in EU and the UK, also in the US... but sadly, I believe (key word there is believe) that it will sell a lot more over here than anywhere else. Makes sence. Since as of April 2010, there are over 40,000,000 (40 million) XBOX 360's worldwide. That's basic information if you need proof for that one too. Reguardless. Even if 10% of the 40 million, that's still 4,000,000 buyers x $150 USD = $600,000,000 dollars. If they sell more than 10% worldwide, they are shooting at over $1 billion dollars in revanue. Reguardless, I doubt they spent that much to create it, make it, etc.

For everyone who says Kinect is expensive and I am going to go buy PS Move, you are just fooling yourself. PS Wand 50$ (*2 for some games like the bow and arrow game), so that's 100$. The nunchuk for another 30$, PS Eye toy that most people don't have, that's another 30. More than Kinect, and this is ONLY for 1 player. 1 Kinect is for several players. Now, for the price, it may be overpriced, but how come Apple products that don't even cost that much to make (iPad cost is like 250$ and sells at a minimum price of 499$), sell millions within months. 3 million iPads in 80 days, over 2 million iPhone 4 so far and it hasn't been a week. THOSE are expensive products and I don't see anyone complaining.

Wasn't interested when I heard it was going to be $50.00. Now that's $150.00, I'll avoid it like the plague. In this economy, this is a bad move.

The joypad will continue to reign for several decades. There really is very little demand for motion control for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. Granted, I do like variety in my gaming experience, but only if it is interesting. It just comes to show that even the most advanced of technology is not essential.

keep digging your grave xbox.... kinect is looking like fail. thanks for getting everyone excited at last years E3 with your "tech demo' that has since been put under heavy scrutiny due to many believing it was a fake, and let's face it you can't tell me you had all that buzz and hype about the Milo demo and you decide it wouldnt be in best interest to further production of the game. have fun xbox fanboys while trying to talk yourselves out of being embarassed by your almighty microsoft. while you and a bud are petting and feeding your retarded lion or tiger on kinectimals, I'll be playing legit games that utilize BUTTONS, and have the ability to play with up to 4 players instead of 2.

@sither03 had you actually read my comment you wouldve noticed i was referring to the USA and the fact that the US population hasnt gone in droves to preorder the Kinect. I said nothing about the UK so why get all defensive .... Im saying herei n the U S A there have been no ads about it and unless you follow E3 (only gamers ... ) you have no idea it even exists at this point except for some sparse hints of it on the 360 dash which many people dont even bother looking at before going into their games... next time read carefully instead of getting defensive over nothing ...

@ColdfireTrilogy, Okay, first of all we don't live in a hole in England we all know what Kinect is, It's been advertised pretty extesively on the xbox dashboard and on TV and at E3 and it may surprise you to hear this but we do have TV's and internet over here! We know what its all about and if anybody wants my opinion I happen to think that kinect that will be a complete success, because people are always saying that they want a more immersive gaming experience and I think that Kinect will bring you that but I do think that $150 is a lot of money, but lets not forget that there has been no confirmed price as of yet, so lets just wait and see how much it's going to cost, but I for one will be buying it so long as it isnt too expensive!

It's certainly overpriced for a questionable product. Worse case scenario, you could attach some steel-wool to one end and use it as an expensive backscratcher.

This isn't even a news. I haven't even pre-oredered Halo: Reach. Why pre-order Kinect now? Plus at Gamestop, Kinect has more pre-orders than Move. So who cares what is the pre-order count of Kinect in some UK retailer?

I actually like the idea of Kinect...it can have uses beyond gaming as the technology evolves. Microsoft is going about this all wrong. Targeting an expensive and unproven peripheral to the "casual" audience is just not smart. If anything, Microsoft should focus on the non-gaming aspects of it and treat it like a standalone device, touting its more useful features, and treating the gaming aspects like a bonus. That will draw the attention of who they should really be after, the people that Nintendo went after with the Wii... not the "casuals" but the non-gamers and the former gamers who aren't getting involved with this generation (or at least not the HD part of it).

@ RadicalToenail perfectly said. No one wants to buy an accessory that's close to the cost of the system, Microsoft got away with charging too much on everything else and making it so you can only buy from them. It's not gonna fly this time. They had a pitiful line up of games compared to the PS3 and this is the only ace in the hole they have, they are finished if they make it unobtainable to the masses.

It is quite expensive. But so is the Move. At least with Kinect you pay $150 and two players can play. With Move you have to buy the two wands and 2 sub controllers for 2-player (I know you don't have to buy the sub-controller but it enhances the experience) . Both are cool for certain reasons though.

The reason Microsoft hasn't named a price yet is because they wanted to test the waters and see what people would pay for it...obviously, no one wants to pay $150 or more for this. It's unreasonable, especially in these rough times we are living in.

Too expensive, not enough info, and no games that are appealing to most hardcore gamers.

I'm going for the Move because I know what it does, it's a somewhat reasonable price, and we've been able to see all sorts of games played in different ways with it and we know other games that will support it that definitely appease core gamers (Killzone 3 for sure).

I was hopeful for Kinect after last E3, but was really let down this year. Hopefully Move won't let me down :(

It needed to be around $70-80 in order to make any kind of splash at all. As it stands we are looking at the next gaming paper weight and it is all MS's fault. Shouldn't they know people would reject this price, especially the casuals they are targeting?
