Jurassic World Becomes Fourth Film Ever to Earn $1 Billion Internationally

This summer's dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic World has now earned more than $1 billion at the international box office. Variety reports that the film--the fourth in the Jurassic Park franchise--is now one of only four movies to hit this milestone.

When the film was released in June, it took only 13 days for it to earn $1 billion worldwide, itself a record. Now Jurassic World joins Avatar, Titanic, and Furious 7 as the only films to cross this line purely on international receipts. It stands as the third most successful movie of all time, although with a worldwide gross of £1.64 billion, it still sits some way behind James Cameron's Avatar ($2.79 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion). In terms of domestic receipts, the film has to date made $646 million.

This latest statistic marks another huge success for Universal, who has earned more money this year than any other film studio in history. It is also the first studio ever to release three films in one year that have topped $1 billon in worldwide grosses, with the animated smash Minions joining Jurassic World and Furious 7.

Jurassic World is directed by Colin Trevorrow, and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. A sequel was announced in July, with a June 2018 release date.
