Jurassic World Becomes Fourth Film Ever to Earn $1 Billion Internationally

Another monstrous success story for Universal.

This summer's dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic World has now earned more than $1 billion at the international box office. Variety reports that the film--the fourth in the Jurassic Park franchise--is now one of only four movies to hit this milestone.

When the film was released in June, it took only 13 days for it to earn $1 billion worldwide, itself a record. Now Jurassic World joins Avatar, Titanic, and Furious 7 as the only films to cross this line purely on international receipts. It stands as the third most successful movie of all time, although with a worldwide gross of £1.64 billion, it still sits some way behind James Cameron's Avatar ($2.79 billion) and Titanic ($2.19 billion). In terms of domestic receipts, the film has to date made $646 million.

This latest statistic marks another huge success for Universal, who has earned more money this year than any other film studio in history. It is also the first studio ever to release three films in one year that have topped $1 billon in worldwide grosses, with the animated smash Minions joining Jurassic World and Furious 7.

Jurassic World is directed by Colin Trevorrow, and stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. A sequel was announced in July, with a June 2018 release date.

It's probably made a whole lot easier when the cost of going to the movies is more expensive. Are ticket prices the same now as they were when Titanic screened? Titanic might be more impressive from that perspective.

@jinzo9988: Yep.. If it sold the same number of tickets today it would be closer to $5billion.

Lies, there's no way a movie like this could succeed without Jeff Goldblum's star power.

How Furious 7 is in that list is beyond me. Seriously WHAT THE ****! every stinking time one of these movies comes out, we have ignorant inbred teenagers driving like retards on the streets. Every time this hits the theatre, the police station here where I live deploys officers to watch for fast driving idiots.

Avatar image for Smaug317

@mathrym: It's because Paul Walker died. Anytime a star dies before the movie comes out, it's huge!

Although a good movie, I found it a little lacking compared to the first three movies before it. Maybe because of the CGI dino's, or the unmemorable cast, or because the plot felt sorta flat to me.

Avatar image for Suaron_x
Suaron_x

@cboye18: I wouldn't call it a "good" movie. Adequate would be the proper description. The CGI covered for the lack of story/characters. It's a shame that this movie joins the billion dollar club, because it means even more dumbed down CGI heavy movies will follow. Of the list, Avatar was the only one that had a decent (i.e. good) story. Titanic's story was merely adequate as well and Furious whatever is not the type of movie I'd ever go see.

Avatar image for balintcsikos

@Suaron_x: LoL Avatar started the heavy CGI era. Not to mention how unoriginal the story was...

Avatar image for fatalscorpion

@Suaron_x: Ugh! Avatar was so unoriginal it was awful! Completely ripped off Pocahontus (or however you spell that bitches name)

Avatar image for Smosh150
Smosh150

@Suaron_x: Avatar completely ripped off of Dances with Wolves with its story, I liked Avatar, but it was just blatant plagiarism(I'm not saying it is bad to use elements, but throughout the movie it still is very similar to Dances with Wolves).

Avatar image for Suaron_x
Suaron_x

@Smosh150: Avatar and Dances w/Wolves share similar themes. They are not the same story. Almost any movie that comes out will share a similar theme with a movie/book that proceeded it. When you boil a story down, there's really only a dozen or so truly different themes. The story in Avatar was good and even though I've seen Dances w/Wolves I never thought to myself it's the same story. When I saw Jurassic World, I thought to myself this is almost the exact same story as Jurassic Park with bigger special effects.

Avatar image for Smosh150
Smosh150

@Suaron_x: Fair enough, I'm gonna label that as my opinion on the matter. I was not saying it as fact(Though my wording probably suggested so). There were just multiple aspects of that movie which were too similar and lead into each other fairly well. Not to mention that Cameron did admit to using elements from Dancing with Wolves.

Been about 10 years since I've seen the movie though, so I could be fuzzy on it.

@Smosh150: And Dances with Wolves ripped off Pocahontas

Avatar image for Smosh150
Smosh150

@dunc7827: Didn't the Disney movie release after Dances with Wolves? 1990 vs 1995, plus the actual history is nothing like Avatar or Dances with Wolves.

Avatar image for dunc7827
dunc7827

@Smosh150: The story of Pocahontas has been around longer than the Disney movie each film are an adaption of the original story

Avatar image for Smosh150
Smosh150

@dunc7827: Yea I may have to go back and read some then, I am getting some of the actual history mixed up with the story.
