Josh Brolin Will Never Stop "Shitting" On His DC Movie Flop

Brolin has, however, reconnected with the movie's director, who required multiple facial surgeries for bone cancer.

Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin has vowed to never stop bad-mouthing his 2010 DC movie flop, Jonah Hex, for a very simple reason.

"I won't ever stop shitting on Jonah Hex because it was a shitty f**king movie!" he told GQ.

Jonah Hex, based on the gunslinging DC Comics character, earned just $10.9 million at the global box office against a $47 million budget. The movie was also very poorly received by critics.

Brolin has, however, changed his mind about the movie's director, Jimmy Hayward. Brolin previously criticized Hayward for being too inexperienced in his eyes. Since then, Brolin and Hayward have reconnected, with Hayward apologizing for his role in the movie's performance.

Hayward also revealed to Brolin that he has bone cancer. He's had multiple reconstructive surgeries to help alleviate the extremely painful form of cancer.

"It reminded me [that] you can't just keep shitting on somebody," Brolin said. "I don't know what the f**k's going on in his life. I mean, total facial reconstruction, the whole thing."

Brolin previously told Variety that Jonah Hex was "not successful creatively or monetarily." A major issue, he said, was the rushed hiring of Hayward. Studio management pressed Brolin to find a director in two weeks, Brolin said, and he said he "loved" that Hayward was passionate. However, Brolin admitted that "it didn't feel right."

In addition to Brolin in the title role, Jonah Hex starred Megan Fox, Michael Fassbender, Lance Reddick, and John Malkovich. Michael Shannon was in the movie, too, but had his scenes cut.

"I just think we made a big mistake with the director--not to blame it all at him, because that was my choice, that was my bad choice," Brolin said.

Brolin did not have final cut on Jonah Hex, and this hurt the film as well, he said. Brolin said the studio "cut it very poorly" and in the end, the studio's ambition to make an "accessible" film backfired and it became the "least accessible movie."

Brolin would go on to find huge success with Marvel years later with his starring role as the villain Thanos in the latest Avengers films.
