LAS VEGAS--In their opening keynote address at the annual D.I.C.E. Summit in Las Vegas today, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams announced they are working on an unannounced game project together.

Abrams and Newell spoke at length about the differences between film and games and the challenges for each medium in telling a good story. After critiquing and praising each other's work through various clips from films like Cloverfield and Star Trek and games like Portal, Half-Life, and Half-Life 2, Abrams and Newell announced they have been speaking at length about joining forces to make a game.

Newell also announced that he is investigating the possibility of working with Abrams on a Portal or Half-Life film.

No more details about the projects were revealed.

Abrams' latest film, Star Trek: Into Darkness, will be released in May. He has also been lined up to direct the next Star Wars film.

Newell will also host a keynote address on Thursday titled "A View on Next Steps," which will detail the Valve mastermind's thoughts on where the games industry is heading and the kinds of advances Valve is making. The company recently announced a partnership with PC maker Xi3 to develop its own take on the long-rumoured Steam Box.

The D.I.C.E. Summit will run from February 5 to 8 in Las Vegas.

@Phrosnite Wrong. He saved the Mission Impossible franchise after the travesty that was MI2 and he saved the Star Trek series by successfully rebooting it while still preserving The Original Series' storyline (no menial task). Even the minor characters in Star Trek did an excellent job acting, which is a testament to his skills as a director. Some of his TV shows have gone downhill in their later seasons, but that's mainly due to the fact that he has very little involvement after their first few episodes.

@Sardinar I disliked it mostly because Sci Fi used to be intelligent and he made it stupid. That he completely overwrote the history of all previous star trek movies and series doesn't bother me too much.

That he ignored what Star Trek is all about is a much bigger issue.

@Saketume @Sardinar @TheAgingGamer Well, people hated the movie only because of their complacent expectations. Almost ALWAYS do people fail to account for the passage of time and the changes that are brought along. Star Trek in the 2009 would never be the same as Star Trek in the 1966.

Personally, I thought the movie wasn't all that dumb. Surely not as thematic and deep as the series itself, but making the movie identical to the series would only cater to the fans - not to common viewer. But, again, it's just me being seventeen, young enough to keep my mind open. I can't blame anyone who loved Star Trek the way it has been for almost 50 years now.

Seriously though He made people who hated star trek like it and people who like star trek hate it.


He even said he's not a fan himself

he never watched the show at all.

His lack of respect for the original shows. But more importantly the original was intellectually stimulating and interesting while his movie was all about flashy visuals

@TheAgingGamer @Phrosnite I agree with the Star Trek comment, but there is no way to save the MI franchise. Unless you start with getting rid of Tom Cruise.

@gatsbythepig @TheAgingGamer @Phrosnite LOL..well, I don't care for Tom Cruise much either, but I did enjoy MI3&4 (Tom Cruise notwithstanding). Abrams did a decent job reigning in the ego trip that was MI2 and the supporting cast and storyline were both really good in both films.
