Japanese Xbox 360 sales off to slow start

Despite a sellout at Microsoft's launch party, plenty of consoles were still available during the console's debut weekend. Photos inside.

TOKYO--In North America and Europe, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold out in most retail locations within hours of going on sale. In Japan, though, it was a different story, as there were still plenty of consoles on shelves throughout its debut weekend.

Microsoft had a successful launch ceremony at the Shibuya Tsutaya shopping center, where executives Peter Moore and Yoshihiro Maruyama joined 250 gamers to count down the last seconds before the Xbox 360 went on sale in Japan. Bill Gates didn't make an appearance in person, but nevertheless, the console sold out in just 30 minutes at the store.

But at other retailers in the city, lines for the Xbox 360 were not nearly as long. At the Shinjuku location of the popular Yodobashi Camera electronics-store chain, where Sony officially launched the PSP last year, around 30 people were lined up around half an hour before the console went on sale at 7:30 a.m. At other major shops, crowds reportedly ranged from 10 to 30 people, although customers who preordered didn't have to line up at most locations.

But after hardcore gamers made their purchases, many 360 units remained unsold. For example, the Akihabara branch of Yodobashi Camera promoted the Xbox 360 heavily. It established a dedicated area and cash register for the machine, where many customers stopped to check out a trailer of the 360's forthcoming adventure game Ninety-Nine Nights. However, most visitors walked away without buying a 360. On Sunday evening, one of the busiest shopping times in the weekend, over two dozen Xbox 360s were stacked up behind the 360 cash register and several idle, bored-looking sales assistants.

The apparent lack of enthusiasm came despite retailers' efforts to promote the Xbox 360. Most displayed the console prominently near their entrance or cash register. Many stores also had high-visibility Xbox 360 demo kiosks where people could try out the games or watch trailers on a high-definition LCD screen. In general, retailers also sold the Xbox 360 at around 38,800 yen ($322), a slight, 1,000 yen ($8.34) discount from its official sticker price.

Some major retailers offered more substantial Xbox 360 discounts. Akihabara's Asobit City was offering a 15,000 yen ($125) store credit if customers signed up for a broadband Internet service plan when they purchase their Xbox 360. Sofmap offered a 20,000 yen ($166) discount on Xbox 360s, with a purchase of a game and a broadband ISP signup. Sofmap also randomly gave away two free Xbox 360s to customers who purchased a certain amount of goods at the store.

I don't know what's this thing with Sony is going to win, or Nintendo is going to come 2nd. What I know is "I have a X360, and I'm having a hell of good time with it - I also have a PSP and also have a hell of a (portable) good time". Can't understand this bashing, is it jealous ? Don't like? - leave us alone..., but I guess PS fanboys has nothing better to do than wait for a "spring" release, isn't it ?, By the way, I have no problem whatsoever to consider buying a PS3 by "spring", but I have a whole new machine to play with!

Arghhh people reli annoy me. First of all gettin all of the ps3 revolution n 360 fanboys/girls wen they dont even ever give the other console a chance they stik to wht they got n jus annoy other console owners. All the next gen consoles will b just as gd as eachother in some way or another n by the looks of it the only small next gen console will b the revolution coz the ps3 is lookin just as big as the 360 if not bigger. Personally i own an xbox 360 n i think it is amazin n i feel sorry for japan as they had a pretty poor game release line-up but i dare say it will get better soon and i am planning on buying a ps3 and revolution (thats if i can affored them coz i here the ps3 is reli gunna stick a dent in my wallet).

Ofcourse they didn't want the 360. Everything from Sony and Nintendo launchs there first, they don't want 360 cause the stupid Americans got it first. Oh, well. Just means more people speaking english on Xbox live.

All these critics saying that the Xbox would do better in Japan. They had a reputation to build up from the last mistake they did. Plus, Sony has been in the market even longer and Bill Gates is trying to jump on the bandwagon without even knowing about games. Yes he has his people but just goes to show if a billionaire doesn't play video games...why should he bother advertising them in a country of video games. Sony has already won the console war.

I'm tired of the morons who keep saying that it bombed in Japan because Japanese gamers want quality. That's garbage. Japanese gamers just want boring RPGs. I guess if you don't have much of a life of your own, it's good to pretend that you're someone else in a game for 8 hours a day. But, I prefer my sports and FPS titles for a few reasons. They offer more replay value since they are geared toward multiplayer, you can play a full game in 30 minutes (multiplayer) and have a definite winner, you don't have to talk to other folks who play the same kind of game about their level 60 ass-clown with uber1337 spells and weapons. If you win a game in an FPS or sports title, it's because you have better strategy and skill. If you win a battle in an MMORPG it's most likely because you live on there and guy that you fought hasn't dedicated 8 hours or more to his character per day. Sure the PS3 will be a good system...Sure the Pretendo will be innovative and interesting...But the XBOX 360 is also a good system that will continue to get better. Given the ease of developing for the 360 compared to the PS3 you will see the list of games increase. I'm sure that sales will go up in Japan as soon as the RPG titles start flowing in on the 360. But all I realy care about are my sports and FPS titles so keep them coming!

I think they should have tried to get more japanesse friendly games over there. Now when they do finally get them, most likely PS3 will be getting all of the sails. I would say there is not chance for them to get the sales now. Its done just forget about it. They screwed up, its true. Maybe next system... But probably not.

One of the main problems with Microsoft is the fact that they will only support producers that they think will make a hit game. for example look at Psyconauts that game was supposed to be a Xbox exclusive but Microsoft decided to turn it down. So I dont think Microsoft will ever have Japan because when small developers (especially japanese developers with what westerners consider weird games (Katimari Damacy))start up the only support they will most likely get will come somewhat from nintendo but more likely it will be Sony.

Japan may be a very important consolemarket, but in the end it's just 1 country out of many.. The USA and Europe combined are much bigger markets.. And if you like FPS, Racing, Sports and Action games, the Xbox is your thing.. I personally couldn't care less about RPG or adventure games the Japanse seem the care about.. Like I said, it's mainly a culture thing.. And in the end, who cares if people on the other side of the world buy the same thing as you or not? I don't really..

To scottwilkins "Slow? Yet sold out. Hmmmm, what's the truth..." if you read the article my friend it says that it sold out at oen location opening day. Everywhere else in Japan hence the articles title "Japanese xbox sales off to a slow start" has an abundance of systems. As for the rest of the world well look at the number game lets say there are about 5 million xbox fans worldwide jes a approx. Now lets say that about half decided they'd wanna buy the system, because they are dedicated. That leaves us at about 2.5 mil still just approximating. Now there are oh say around 2million xbox 360's released on release day. Im still just approximating. Well since there are about 2.5 mil people wanting to buy, and about oh say 2 million xboxs, i think they are gonna sell out based on that number fact ofcourse. Even still it is a decent job except there is one problem thinking those numbers mean uber success for xbox. That fact is lets say half the sony fans want a PS3 so thats about 5.5 million, and lets say sony did the same thing xbox did but proportionally, so let us say they ship 5million units, again with the first 500,000 people dont get their system but which one sells more. these numbers im pulling out of my @ss however that is how the pattern usually works, usually a big proportion of fans get the next system. hence if sony even got a quarter of the original customers they'd meet or beat xbox in sales for the launch. isnt math fun, FOR THE HORDE!

Sales will pick up when more Japanese-friendly games are released, but then again, once the PS3 comes out, they might as well pull Xbox 360 off the shelves. Fortunately for Mr. Gates, Sony (and Nintendo) will not be so lucky in Europe or North America, but this is still very bad news for the MIcrosoft team. Their Xbox did not do as well as they would have liked, and if they really wanted to cut into Sony's worldwide market share, they needed a far more profound Japanese launch. Still, all Sony really needs to do now is match Microsoft in the U.S. and Europe, and I tend to agree with the majority of analysts who suggest that Sony will in fact do better than match. It's not the U.S., but their failures in Japan are a sign that the Xbox 360 will "lose" to Sony's PS3, and you can bet the execs at Microsoft know this. They probably had lots of nightmares this weekend.

This is no major surprise to me. Japanese are not interested in XBox 360. No games that are out right now for the system interest them. It will be the same failure as the original XBox was, sadly.

well i guess the M$ machine wil have to be content with America, and Europe for now. It takes time for any console to even match the top slot let alone de-throne. Nintendo had its reign for many years, Sony has come in and taken its place, Xbox if they want to really take over got to play the smart way. Give customers games they want if you gave me for example metal gear solid, devil may cry or any games i love ok you've got my attention. Look at how sony got squaresoft in the beginning and Final Fantasy jumped to them. Sony knew if you took the majority of games people liked and offered them you'd be a success. When i think Xbox, i think FPS, Racing, one good fighting franchise, and a bunch of blah titles. Sony has a ton of blah titles, but they also offer quality for any genre u name off. If Xbox offers me the games i love id have no problem playing them on Xbox. However in terms of probability i think not : (

well the most stupid thing you can do is launch a console without one RPG title in japan.. This is where Sony will kill M$ in eastern market. USA its pretty easy to launch a console and all you really need is few Sport title + Racing + FPS and you can have a good launch. Europe its more of action/adventure type game + sport + Racing you can launch. But Japanese market is mainly has RPG buyers so they needed at least 3 Good RPG at launch to even do some break through but it looks like M$ didn't listen to people want in Japan and now they pay the price again. If they had few anime themed game at launch and then they would have gotten more support from gamer in japan because in japan anime is much bigger than sport like it is in america. M$ error will either grow or they can do something about it and get few excusive RPG + anime theme crappy game + get some more japanese title out before PS3 comes out or its all over in the japanese market as soon as Sony launches PS3 and then the gamers wouldn't even think about XBOX 360 as a real console :!

They should have made Japan wait at least half a year, and use the extra production available to supply the USA and Europe.. Sony always does the same with their launches, always Japan first, the rest much later.. And we all know Japan bassicly only really cares about their own products from Sony and Nintendo.. Also: Xbox = Western culture Japan = very different from Western culture

Moore concluded with even grander statements. "This is not a sprint. This is a marathon. Life cycles of consoles last for many years, and it's now a global business. We're the first company in the world to launch globally in the United States, Europe, and then Japan in 18 days. We think that gives us phenomenal momentum against our competition. We're very optimistic about our numbers. Obviously on a long-term basis, it's our goal to drive towards complete market leadership around the world." Maruyama talked more about the current status of the Xbox 360 in Japan, and revealed that some additional surprises should be waiting during the remaining few weeks of 2005.

I'm sure the Japanese still have bad memories with the original Xbox with it's size and all. The 360's power supply isn't helping any either. Not to mention the launch titles...

if someone tried to sell you an expensive console with no games that you liked, would you buy it? no. especially when they know theyre getting ps3 soon and it will no doubt be teeming with RPG's and fighters. (droools....ps3 rpg's....mmmmm.)

I'm sure that it will pick up. Most people who bought the console probably just wanted to get their hands on or a feel for the next generation of console gaming.

Xbox just can't break through that market. If they didn't have Tecmo on their side, no one would even bother over there.

Figures...they should have taken the time to supply the USA with more 360s then to waste time over there where demand is not as high. It was already launched in the USA BUT it still feels like that it wasn't even released yet with all this demand for it.

It does kind of figure. Japan didn't get a very strong set of launch games but it might gain more popularity in a few months after more games are released.
