Japanese Xbox 360 sales off to slow start

Despite a sellout at Microsoft's launch party, plenty of consoles were still available during the console's debut weekend. Photos inside.

TOKYO--In North America and Europe, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold out in most retail locations within hours of going on sale. In Japan, though, it was a different story, as there were still plenty of consoles on shelves throughout its debut weekend.

Microsoft had a successful launch ceremony at the Shibuya Tsutaya shopping center, where executives Peter Moore and Yoshihiro Maruyama joined 250 gamers to count down the last seconds before the Xbox 360 went on sale in Japan. Bill Gates didn't make an appearance in person, but nevertheless, the console sold out in just 30 minutes at the store.

But at other retailers in the city, lines for the Xbox 360 were not nearly as long. At the Shinjuku location of the popular Yodobashi Camera electronics-store chain, where Sony officially launched the PSP last year, around 30 people were lined up around half an hour before the console went on sale at 7:30 a.m. At other major shops, crowds reportedly ranged from 10 to 30 people, although customers who preordered didn't have to line up at most locations.

But after hardcore gamers made their purchases, many 360 units remained unsold. For example, the Akihabara branch of Yodobashi Camera promoted the Xbox 360 heavily. It established a dedicated area and cash register for the machine, where many customers stopped to check out a trailer of the 360's forthcoming adventure game Ninety-Nine Nights. However, most visitors walked away without buying a 360. On Sunday evening, one of the busiest shopping times in the weekend, over two dozen Xbox 360s were stacked up behind the 360 cash register and several idle, bored-looking sales assistants.

The apparent lack of enthusiasm came despite retailers' efforts to promote the Xbox 360. Most displayed the console prominently near their entrance or cash register. Many stores also had high-visibility Xbox 360 demo kiosks where people could try out the games or watch trailers on a high-definition LCD screen. In general, retailers also sold the Xbox 360 at around 38,800 yen ($322), a slight, 1,000 yen ($8.34) discount from its official sticker price.

Some major retailers offered more substantial Xbox 360 discounts. Akihabara's Asobit City was offering a 15,000 yen ($125) store credit if customers signed up for a broadband Internet service plan when they purchase their Xbox 360. Sofmap offered a 20,000 yen ($166) discount on Xbox 360s, with a purchase of a game and a broadband ISP signup. Sofmap also randomly gave away two free Xbox 360s to customers who purchased a certain amount of goods at the store.

First of all, the PS2 launched with a _terrible_ lineup in Japan, and the hardware had issues (sound familiar?). The reason isn't that there weren't RPG's, it's that the _360_ didn't have RPG's. Why is this important? The PS2 had HUGE momentum driving it due to the success of the PS1. The 360 has almost NO momentum. To gain Japan market share, they have to deliver good, exclusive RPG titles. Until they do so, we'll see no real progress in Japan. As far as the XBOX not doing well because it isn't Japanese, I'll leave that one alone, since I don't think that ALONE can account for this.

Real gamers play Xbox. PS2 is for the kiddies. From better graphics card, hard drive and a more stable online mulitplayer. Xbox smokes PS2 and leaves it in the dust. I' m no Xbox fanboy because I own a PS2 as well, but Xbox is clearly the superior gaming console. The only reason why the Xbox does not succeed in Japan is because of the games. Japan is a totally different beast. They love RPG's and eclectic video gaming experiences. Xbox games have a more western slant that Asian gamers sometimes cannot appreciate. Other than that on all other counts the Xbox is the console gaming experience everyone wants, but is too busy shoving there noses up Sony's butt.

Crossefire00 -----------"I'm tired of the morons who keep saying that it bombed in Japan because Japanese gamers want quality. That's garbage. Japanese gamers just want boring RPGs. I guess if you don't have much of a life of your own, it's good to pretend that you're someone else in a game for 8 hours a day. But, I prefer my sports and FPS titles for a few reasons. They offer more replay value since they are geared toward multiplayer, you can play a full game in 30 minutes (multiplayer) and have a definite winner, you don't have to talk to other folks who play the same kind of game about their level 60 ass-clown with uber1337 spells and weapons. If you win a game in an FPS or sports title, it's because you have better strategy and skill. If you win a battle in an MMORPG it's most likely because you live on there and guy that you fought hasn't dedicated 8 hours or more to his character per day. Sure the PS3 will be a good system...Sure the Pretendo will be innovative and interesting...But the XBOX 360 is also a good system that will continue to get better. Given the ease of developing for the 360 compared to the PS3 you will see the list of games increase. I'm sure that sales will go up in Japan as soon as the RPG titles start flowing in on the 360. But all I realy care about are my sports and FPS titles so keep them coming! "--------- My response: The majority of Americans are about instant gratification. If a person can't see instant results, reap instant reward then it isnt worth the time. Why do you think "Summer Blockbuster" movies do so well in America? Throw in a bunch of explosions, complicated coreography minus a solid plot and the results come as hundreds of millions of dollars in the box office sales. I'm not saying thats a bad thing to be about the "instant gratification", lord, Halo is the pinnacle of "quality" in a non-depth experience. Substance is not the same as quality.... but it is my point that the majority of Japanese gamers are about longterm rewards in video games. On the other hand... I think the line between these types of games are becoming blurred.I know probably half the players who played GTA San Andreas played it because they had half an interest in living the "ghetto lifestyle".... the other half played it for the instant gratificational "high" of running crazy and doing whatever the hell they felt like doing. Personally, i live in the suburbs, hate rap with a passion, but loved that game because of the instant experience. Likewise,, many people loved it because it drove them into the experience of being a gangster. My point is that games don't have to fall into either category... San Andreas fell into both categories because it combined some of the classical parts of RPGs to the gameplay of most instant gratificational shooters. I don't know about you guys, but I would rather see games in the future fall into several genres than to stick to one way of doing things. Thats just me. So overall, quality has no direct corrolation to substance. A game doesnt have to be drowned in depth to be high "quality" Substance is generally what the Japanese audience is craving, not "quality" per se'.

It will pick up. It was just the first week end and plus they have to build up their library of Japaneese games. You would think they would have made sure they had enough for there beloved country who has mad love for the Xbox... I don't care as long as we get some Japaneese games I don't care.

Japan is full of Sony/ Nintendo fanboys. Microsoft should have shipped more consoles over to Europe instead of wasting resources over there. The Eastern markets just doesn't like Western intrusion. If only they would realise that Microsoft offer a much better online services (for thier RPG obsession) than sony and nintendo. Hopefully their hardware crashes will be kept to a minimum.

All of the systems have A regeon lock on them so they can only play games from Japan. +they are not going to just walk into stores and just ask for them back, it's just not going to happen

Let's face it Japan isn't going to get behind a american console. I mean no one expects american automobiles to be as succesful in Japan as Japanese automobiles. Sure would be nice if American consumers showed the same loyalty to American products.

hey im somewhat of a sony fanboy and i have a 360. Im happy with. Look no one should be shooked that the 360 didnt sell very well in Japan. It was bound to happen! I want a PS3 more than anything but understand one thing, you think its hard getting a 360 here in the good old states, wait to the PS3 is out which will be more like fall 2006. 360 will win the console war till the end of 2006 because PS3 will be hard as hell to get your hands on. But once 2007 is here it well be all over for 360. 360 is still right now a very good machine, but i feel once all 3 are out, The real battle will begin. PS3 will be #1, Revolutuion will be #2, and the 360 will be #3 worldwide. Because if the Rev is as good as what it sounds like it will a have major inpact. I want one. GO PS3 ! EVERY gamer should give the 360 a try because ive had a real fun time with it so far. Try Call of Duty 2 and Condemned for example and you will think twice about the 360 totally sucking. But face it, PS3 will be # 1. And better also. Thanks.

Microsoft may have had a global plan for the Xbox 360 in USA, Europe and Asia, but it still seems like it is too much of a western console to please the other countries.

The poor launch lineup plus (i am sure) all of the negative publicity regarding defects on US and EU units would make for a slow start. The saving grace for the 360 in Japan will be the Japanese RPGs, if MS fumbles there... it is going to fall flat. Unfortunately no JRPGs for launch. If they pickup the pace with more Japanese oriented games from Japanese developers... then maybe. If PS3 comes along and still no JGAmes, then it will be game over for Microsoft.

Well, this Sucks. no one was surprised by this, especially not M$ they should have Halfed their shipment to Nippon. or they can send a bunch back stateside or to europe. I mean not that the fact that Japan didn't have an interest in the system to begin with, but you give them 6 games and a crappy xbox emu list, its like whats the point. so now they're collecting dust while we're all hung out to dry over here. way to strategize M$...way to go, pricks.

Sales will likely pick up once there are more games available from Japanese publishers. Right now there isn't much to choose from and people are taking a "wait and see" approach. Makes sense.

Yeah Gamespot and everyone else made way too much out of the launch day. All they said was they sold out "at the event", thus somehow deeming the launch successful, failing to mention how it did in the rest of the country. And, just as I suspected, you lose in Japan again Microsoft.

ok lets all chill you know all these arguements of us fanboys are for a reason. PS fanboys like me are tired of hearing how much better the xbox than our PS. its smacks of presumptiousness, and basically treating us like morons. They might as well say hey you were dumb for getting the PS why because M$ said so. Show me the logic, what makes either of these better, M$ had the graphical edge yea, and halo ok, even a way better online sure why not. However as a PS fan i defend sony cause they have what i want cause i dont care a lot about graphics, i dont care about online play, i prefer the games they have like devil may cry, metal gear solid, and final fantasy and xbox doesnt have them. Im a fan because sony has what i want. I will repeatedly say i wish M$ and their xbox the best of luck with the competition only us fans benefit with price, and quality of games. I dont agree with the bashing of M$ so much i think they are a company who has problems like any sony has had major ones. however you tellign me im stupid because i love my system fo rmy reasons will spark arguements. i dont kno anybody with a 360 but hey doesnt mean i buy all the BullS*** being said. Sony will unveil their product with a lot of hype to and hopefully with out any real serious problems, but lets stop mocking our company of choice, and lets just play games we love for whatever system.

spawnx28 What you said is right we will not see PS3 untill Q3 of 2006 It's just to sad for you that there are no good games on XBOX360 to enjoy and yee by the way you have like 10 games for the year and all of them suck (if you are not FPS fun) so untill than I will enjoy my PS2 with 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 that many good games

You know it's almost poetic justice. If MS would've halved the units shipped to Japan and region recoded the units for North America and Europe, they would've been alright. MS needs to realise that a non-japanese manufactured game console is never going to sell well there. They really screwed their loyal fans here in the US and Europe by focusing on beating out Sony in Japan. Serves 'em right!

MSFT's goal is not to be #1 in japan but to get 1 million consoles out there so that it will be more attractive to developers. I'm so TIRED of ppl talking about launch titles, they mean nothing! Do you buy a console to play for a month or do you plan on playing it for the next couple years. You cannot have everything now. MSFT has addressed every single issue from the last generation. Everything from console and controller design to signing up major japanese developers. If you had any complaints about the original xbox I bet that changed with the 360. I'm an RPG fan too but FF turned me off since VIII (what the hell was IX??). I don't plan on missing out on Enchant Arm or Lost Odessey you should check out the trailers. It's all about titles that are in development and we will be playing soon.

I couldn't care less of who "wins the console war", got no shares of neither companies. Just want to have a good time, and I'm having it with X360 (and PSP), but that's just me, that "spring release" sounds dubious, and then again I think I can afford another machine by "spring". PS only fanboys - if you got bored of "waiting/bashing X360", and "waiting/bashing X360", I can post of few game saves of me finishing PDZ or driving a McLaren real, real fast in PGR3.

I think Xbox 360 and Japan is like Nintendo and Europe, it just doesn't work out. I mean I buy Nintendo consoles and I'm in Europe but playstation is king in Europe where Nintendo struggles to pull it's weight. The PS2 does not have any weak region it seems although this may change next gen if the price is too high.
