Japanese Xbox 360 sales off to slow start

Despite a sellout at Microsoft's launch party, plenty of consoles were still available during the console's debut weekend. Photos inside.

TOKYO--In North America and Europe, Microsoft's Xbox 360 sold out in most retail locations within hours of going on sale. In Japan, though, it was a different story, as there were still plenty of consoles on shelves throughout its debut weekend.

Microsoft had a successful launch ceremony at the Shibuya Tsutaya shopping center, where executives Peter Moore and Yoshihiro Maruyama joined 250 gamers to count down the last seconds before the Xbox 360 went on sale in Japan. Bill Gates didn't make an appearance in person, but nevertheless, the console sold out in just 30 minutes at the store.

But at other retailers in the city, lines for the Xbox 360 were not nearly as long. At the Shinjuku location of the popular Yodobashi Camera electronics-store chain, where Sony officially launched the PSP last year, around 30 people were lined up around half an hour before the console went on sale at 7:30 a.m. At other major shops, crowds reportedly ranged from 10 to 30 people, although customers who preordered didn't have to line up at most locations.

But after hardcore gamers made their purchases, many 360 units remained unsold. For example, the Akihabara branch of Yodobashi Camera promoted the Xbox 360 heavily. It established a dedicated area and cash register for the machine, where many customers stopped to check out a trailer of the 360's forthcoming adventure game Ninety-Nine Nights. However, most visitors walked away without buying a 360. On Sunday evening, one of the busiest shopping times in the weekend, over two dozen Xbox 360s were stacked up behind the 360 cash register and several idle, bored-looking sales assistants.

The apparent lack of enthusiasm came despite retailers' efforts to promote the Xbox 360. Most displayed the console prominently near their entrance or cash register. Many stores also had high-visibility Xbox 360 demo kiosks where people could try out the games or watch trailers on a high-definition LCD screen. In general, retailers also sold the Xbox 360 at around 38,800 yen ($322), a slight, 1,000 yen ($8.34) discount from its official sticker price.

Some major retailers offered more substantial Xbox 360 discounts. Akihabara's Asobit City was offering a 15,000 yen ($125) store credit if customers signed up for a broadband Internet service plan when they purchase their Xbox 360. Sofmap offered a 20,000 yen ($166) discount on Xbox 360s, with a purchase of a game and a broadband ISP signup. Sofmap also randomly gave away two free Xbox 360s to customers who purchased a certain amount of goods at the store.

I think it's an insault to our American Made Game system, witch infact is more powerful than the PS-3 based on spech's. I did like Sony PS-2 and Xbox, but why should any of us be subject to buy a *** game system when we game their system lots of love. I'm sorry but that is Bull Sh*t. I say, F*ck it... Bring those extra 360's over here, where it would do us some good. ... We should treat the PS-3 in the same way they treated the Xbox 360.... This sent a strong message, and it's not that Sony PS-3 would be better... It says that what we make is junk, so why spend you money on it...

From being in Japan, the Japanese aren't very exciting people. Well, unless you go to clubs, then they are plain retarded. Plus, there's soo much Sony crap its unbelieveable. I really don't want Japanese to have the 360 at all.

"we are the superior gaming culture" than why Microsoft should bribe those Japanese companies (like the tecmo, the mistwalker, or whatever) to make games for them, ha ha ha!! It's really funy, a superior company still need help from the one that 'not superior' ha ha ha!! (^^) !! They even try to bribe those Japanese people with a lower price (compared in the US), for their XBOX, and abandoned their own fans in here, in the US, ha ha ha, LAME!! (^^) !! And, if they do, are the superior things, why they found that is really difficult to sell their products, and even bother to penetrate the Japanese market so hard, ha ha ha!! (^^) !!

It's very funy though to call that 'box' the next gen video game system, they didn't even had the next gen disc technology, HD-DVD?? No, Blu-Ray?? No way man (with a big N), that's a SONY's product line up!! Ha Ha Ha. New design in controler?? No (that's Nintendo improvement) (^^) !! And, they didn't even had the next gen display resolution '1080P'. Maybe we should call that 'box' XBOX 1.5 instead, they only offering a graphic update from the previous model, lame!! But we can make a lot of cash, if we go to the Japan or to the Europan countries, buy all of that xbox, and sell it again in the US!! (^^) !! PS: it will save a lot of cash, to buy a PS3, which is the next gen video game system, and also a Blu-Ray disc player. sshhh .... (^^) !!

Is it surprising really??, japan is all about good rpg's and strategy games, not shooteverythingthatmoves-kind of games. Also, consider that japan is an ultra-nacionalist culture (which is why they are an econimic force worldwide), the consume products made by japanese companies ( cars, electronics etc etc), and that is why the 360 won't do as good as their competitors (in japan at least). Also...that speech by moore won't help: "we are a superior 'gaming' culture", yeah, why don't you call them japs or yellows while your at it........

Maybe instead of wasting their money (Microsoft), on the console war, they shoul donate all of their money to support the victims from the hurricane katrina, that would be more wise for them, instead of getting a spank right to their face from the Japanese gamer!! ha ha ha (^^) !!

Skrew JAPAN maybe if M$ focused on the US there wouldn't be so many people without XBOX's now. Mr. Gates doesn't need the big red dot to make Xbox a hit all of us yankee's who made him a gazillionare are just fine to buy his new toy. Why make thousands of people in the US wait in line to not get one then ship a ton to Japan and they don't even want them. I'll say it again SKREW JAPAN!

as much as i dont want microsoft to get richer the competition is good for gamers and even though the 360 is off to a slow start in japan i doubt anyone expected any more... no good games for their tastes... im sure when a few more decent games come out people will try it out in japan especially considering theres another 6 months before the ps3 and revolution roll around... they shouldve left more systems for maybe... australia... at least it wouldve sold out here

I can't say I'm really surprised. I'm not very impressed with what I've seen on the new machine so far because I also play on PC, If I'm going to play quake 4 I will play it on my PC. Matter of fact I have been contemplating either making or buying a media center PC but that's another subject. The Japanese, from posts in this discussion, have been disappointed in the past with what the original XBox had to offer and know that Sony and Nintendo won't let them down. They are probably not buying for those reasons but since i am not Japanses I cannot say what they are thinking. I at some point will probably own all of them but it depends on the games. I can't see buying a Xbox 360 if the quality of games does not improve, just as I will not purchase a Revolution if I do not like the controller or their software support group is as thin as it is now. I will but a Playstation because, like the Japanese, I know Sony has seldom let me down before (trying to forget the HDD fiasco). If the games can match the holy $*** feeling I got while watching the videos I can see why they are saving their money.

I bet if Microsoft had 10 million units to sell in the US they would sell out or would be sold out now. I wonder how many systems japan got in all. Since the fact that DOA or those eh heh RPG's didnt come out with it, we all knew that it wasnt gonna sell with out them. What they should have done is feed to demand over here where they will sell in high numbers for sure since it came out with a couple of games we like, but as you can see it didnt come out with anything they like. I wouldnt be surprised though if the ones they sold turn up on Ebay though. Seems logic, they will make a killing buying them and Auctioning to the people who want em back over here.

First off, half of the gaming market is located in Japan. Europe and the US make up the other half. Second off, the reason the Xbox 360 flopped just like its predecessor is because the Japanese are reserved and respectable people.

I read one person saying that Japan is "Just 1 country"... here why it is so important for US consumers. There are a lot of great developers in Japan right now. Imagine the creative force behind Japanese games applied to Xbox Live... that will be amazing. I don't think anyone (including Microsoft) expected the systam to completely sell out in Japan. This is very similar to the PSP... There was quite a sellout in Japan (right?) on launch day.... but if you remember... the US had a very sluggish start. Now with titles like "GTA Liberty City Stories" it is starting to sell here in the states more consistently. I say give it time... The 360 has about a year headstart in the states and about 6 months headstart in Japan from the PS3. Let's see what sort of Library will be released before we judge. If they drop the ball on good titles for the Japanese demographic then the Xbox is truly a Western Culture Console.

The 360 sales will pick up once more games come out and Live is better established with more Japanese gamers online. But if console don't sell, games won't sell, causing Japanese Developers to pull out of 360 support for their games, which is the worst possible scenario for Microsoft.

Microsoft Corp. sold less than half of the estimated 159,000 Xbox 360 consoles that were available in stores in Japan in its first weekend of sales, a survey showed on Tuesday. Only about 62,000 units were purchased on December 10 and 11, according to an independent study by Enterbrain, which publishes leading Japanese game magazine "Famitsu". That was also less than half the 123,000 units Microsoft sold of its previous generation Xbox in the first three days of sales in February 2002. Read the rest at: << LINK REMOVED >>

thekey,i think that the rev will be #2 world wide . but here in the good old us, it will be # 3. i have a 360 too, and im very happy with it as well. The reason i think that is because in some markets the 360 will not do as well. Im a sony fanboy but i do not want MS to go away from the game industry because competion between companies is good for all gamers.

I went to Yodobashi Camera in Osaka today. They had stacks of 360s behind the counter. I must admit MS made a gallant effort in the marketing of the console but it was a bit sad seeing all of the unsold machines as people back in the States are waiting. But, with the lack of games what do you expect. They had a kiosk with 3 video displays set up but right next to them was the kiosk for the next MGS titles. Ironically, more people were watching the Metal Gear trailers than the 360 trailers. That says it all right there. In the mean time I'll head probably head to the 360 cafe, unless they jack up the prices to compensate for the lack of sales. Reuters is reporting that Famitsu publisher Enterbrain has released results of their independent study, finding that only 62,000 Xbox 360s were sold on December 10 and 11 - less than 30 percent of the total estimated 159,000 units allocated to the territory.-From CVG

I disgree with you jrc123 I don't think in 2007 nintendo's revolution will be #2 I don't think so. Also I don't feel sorry for microsoft failing in Japan because they stiffed us(In the US)just so they could fail in Japan.(I have a 360 And I'm loving it) But they had there chance to dominate and they blew it. They didn't take care of there real fans. "No new systems until Fed/ march? What kind of crap is that? This is the busiest shopping week of the year, they don't have any more systems for the US and they don't have any 360's. Yet Japan has more then enough to go around. This is upsetting when this 360 has so much patential yet it won't realize. Japan will never flock to microsofts Xbox brand no matter how much Japaneese support they get. I"m starting to think that if they brought every great RPG and made it exsclusive to the 360, the Japaneese would never buy it. But its too soon to tell I mean it was only one week end lets see if microsoft can get the games if they can get the games they(that means any body)will come.

They just don't get it, do they? Hey, Ms, yeah, you, the japanese don't care about your console!!!!! They belong to sony and nintendo. Now why would you guys send 360s to a region that could care less and then, short change regions where people are dying for them? See, Americans are all about the dollar and asian countries are about the culture and it is instilled in them deep, I mean, entrenched. MS, you are not going up against another console, you are going up against a culture! In japan, it is probably uncool to even be seen standing in line to purchase a 360 lol. MS, give it up, and foucus on north america, and europe and stop trying to go for global domination...it's not gonna happen in japan!!!! But if it's any consolation, I really like my 360, and I am not even remotely intrested in a ps3...except maybe for ebay.

.... and BTW 2TrickedOut, Xbox fanatics wont admit either that PS also have kickass games and that Xbox have equally as much defects. It's just that everyone seem to think they are the one to decide for all of us. Don't, because it seems really childish. Everyone have the right to like whatever they want, right? A really hot fighter for PS? Virtua Fighter 4 Evo. To compare a X360 racing game with a PS2 racer? Stupid. Forza? Yeah whatever, Me like Burnout 3 ;)
