James Gunn Breaks Silence About Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 Reinstatement

"I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all."

The Guardians of the Galaxy will, indeed, live to fight again with director James Gunn at the helm. Well, at least some of them probably will. Who knows what's going to happen in Avengers: Endgame? However, the news that Disney has rehired James Gunn to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after firing him last summer has been met with unabashed positivity by fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fellow Marvel movie directors, and Gunn himself.

In his first tweet since he was fired in July 2018, Gunn shared a message on the heels of his being hired once again by Marvel Studios. "I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months," he wrote. "I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. I deeply appreciate Disney's decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Love to you all."

Now Playing: Avengers Endgame - New Official Trailer

Gunn was first removed from the project after years-old tweets surfaced, in which he made jokes about rape and pedophilia. At the time, Gunn apologized and noted that he had apologized in the past. At the time, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn explained the director's dismissal, saying, "The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him."

His return to the project--and the Marvel Cinematic Universe--was celebrated by Gunn's fellow MCU directors. Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed tweeted, "Welcome back, James." Meanwhile, Doctor Strange helmer Scott Derrickson offered up a "GLORY HALLELUJA" to the news. Lastly, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi joked, "What the hell?? I thought I was going to do it!!" Waititi has formerly been rumored as a replacement for film, though he previously confirmed that he had no intention of taking over out of respect to Gunn. He said at the time, "I just wouldn't know how to follow up those two films because those are his babies."

With Gunn back in the driver's seat, it's now believed Guardians Vol. 3 will go into production following the director's commitment to the Suicide Squad sequel he's signed on for. The Suicide Squad sequel, which is reportedly eyeing Idris Elba as a replacement for Will Smith in the role of Deadshot, is expected to begin filming later this year.

Story updated to include Taika Waititi's statement.

This entire incident is a perfect example of how social media has forced humans to replace empirical and/or rational thinking and debate with immediate reaction and faux outrage.

Social media has made us dumber.....more dumb? ...dumb?

See?

This decision made me like Disney a little more. No one should be hold accountable for a past minor mistake made through social media years ago. People can change and, apparently, huge companies can too. May Guardians of the Galaxy 3 be the best of them all!

Translation we don't you working for DC since they are starting to turn it around with movies that are making money, let's get you back and make ourselves look good in the process.

The "being the best human being" i think was laying it on a little thick. And lets be honest, he's probably more grateful of the millions he'll receive from the next film... Regardless the guardians of the galaxy movies are probably my most favorite movies of the MCU, and i thank him for putting together some great movies. And thank you to Disney for making the right decision. Anybody could have written/directed the 3rd installment... But, i doubt it would have had the same heart.

That being said, the 1st movie was better than the 2nd, so get to work gunny! And Disney, keep spreadin' the magic, and recast captain marvel. Done and done. =)

This is great news and I'm always happy to see organizations reconsider their position on these sorts of things.

Good part on Disney, don't need to punish someone for a tweet he made years ago. We evolve as humans and learn right from wrong.

@harrypothead: they aren’t saying that. They are acknowledging that you can’t judge someone by something stupid they did a decade ago

@sd4138: but they fired Roseanne for what she said. Disney is showing their true colors just look at the history they have or putting sexual messages in their cartoons towards kids.

@harrypothead They fire roseanne for saying something obscenely racist NOW.

One dude did some edgy humour forever ago, another called a black woman a monkey and a terrorist on twitter for the world to see last year. Gunn apologized long before the tweets resurfaced, whereas roseanne blamed her medication, then changed her story to "I thought the ***** was white!".

World of difference.

@uberDave: Exactly this. Couldn't have said it better myself. People who blindly defend Roseanne while giving James Gunn shit have absolutely no idea what's going on.

@dragonkyn20: Or they do, but they don’t care, or care more about “sticking it to the libs.” I’m not saying all people who wanted him fired are like this, but the majority of posts I read who wanted him fired were, so it seems more than just fringe. Sad that brazen blind partisan is not more embarrassing these days.
