Interest in Darksiders 3 Measured by Darksiders 2 Remaster, Dev Says

Darksiders 2 HD re-release was "just the start."

Nordic Games, the Swedish publisher that acquired the Darksiders property from THQ following its bankruptcy, has discussed plans for a third entry in the series, suggesting the recent re-release of Darksiders 2 was a way to warm up its audience.

Posting on the Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition Steam discussion board, Nordic Games executive producer said the high-definition re-release was "just the start."

He continued: "Since we acquired the franchise we were looking for options for doing a Darksiders 3. The remaster was just a way to get some spotlight on the franchise again, reactivate the community and have a better starting position for Darksiders 3."

Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition was developed by Gunfire Games, a studio staffed "almost entirely" of people who worked on the first two Darksiders titles at original developer Vigil Games.

Nordic Games previously said it is considering a port of the 2010 original Darksiders for new consoles, ahead of a full-scale Darksiders 3 development effort.

"Naturally (and extremely excitedly!), there will be a large-scale project based on Darksiders, but for now it is very important for us to take care of the existing games and make those available to a broader audience," the company said in a statement.

"Bringing Darksiders 2 to current gen was a logical step for us and the team at Gunfire Games know their trade inside-out, so we easily and quickly had lots of ideas that we wanted to realise for this specific edition."

DS, DS2. These games were absolutely amazing. Even the ds2 remaster runs beautifully and flawlessly on my rig. Too bad so many are having issues. Patch will come. Hang tight. Loved the game play, story line, and art style sooo much!

Cant wait for a 3rd! Who will be the hero tho? hmmmmm

If you do release a Darksiders 3, please use Darksiders 1 as a starting point instead of 2...we have enough loot fest games, all I want is another awesome Zelda clone like the first one was.

@Chyld989: I agree, but I want the improvements to combat, skills, weapons, game-play, and graphic detail that was in Darksiders 2. And ensure there is a great story with great Boss battles scattered throughout.

Why buy the franchise if you only plan on making a 3rd if the HD remaster sells better but it wont because it's a mess and it's broken.

@Dav_id83: I wouldn't say it's a mess or broken. Flawed perhaps in different ways. But the goal to use Darksiders II HD on new gen consoles as a measurement to move forward on Darksiders III is misplaced, because the base audience who played Darksiders II on previous gen consoles (i.e., me) may not want to play it again on the new gen. - how many times can I be expected to buy and play the same game? So they are basically targeting new players who haven't played it before, with a few die-hards thrown in. Could be a hard sell to get enough numbers from new gen players. It should be the total number who played on previous gen + those who play it on new gen. And yet, with limited great titles on new gen consoles, it might do fine. It's hard to say. But I hope Nordic Games looks at all the metrics, and also realizes that they do have a fanbase who love this franchise. If Darksiders III is done right the fanbase could grow.

Well, duh, but this is a poor way to go about it. I liked the game and all but it wasn't THAT great.

What we really need is a 4-player co-op game with badass boss battles, four-player puzzles, and a generous loot system.

@RadPro: I personally would love to see co-op - at least 2-[layer. Not sure about 4 player. But it would have to be drop in/out, so you could play the game by yourself if you want (and it wouldn't feel any different than what has been).

Dear Nordic Games, Stop basing interest in a new installment DarkSiders off of how well remasters of games we've already played do. There are plenty of us who'd like to see DarkSiders 3, but have no interest in buying games we've already played or still own. I've never understood the logic behind why companies do this. Reminds me of the idiotic reason we will never get a new Darkstalkers game.... because Capcom felt that Resurrection didn't sell well enough. LOL, no shit, Capcom! Fighting games are a niche genre for one, and any Darkstalkers fan has already played the ever living hell out of those games over the years!

@jayasha: I understand why remasters have become so popular to publishers and developers. They want a way to get people back into the series and hype them up for the new one. It's also a way to give something to the fans to keep them engaged for the time being as well as hopefully bring some new gamers in who may have not played it when it originally came out. However, this series is a blast but this remaster wasn't definitely done through and through, still very fun and somewhat of an upgrade graphically, but not inline with what you would expect. They also didn't do much marketing with it at all.

@jayasha: Though the title of this article was, "Interest in Darksiders 3 Measured by Darksiders 2 Remaster, Dev Says", I didn't see any quotes from the developer actually saying that, so I'm wondering if the headline is just click bait. Otherwise I would agree, it's BS for a developer to tell fans they might only get a sequel if more people buy a remaster.

"Naturally (and extremely excitedly!), there will be a large-scale project based on Darksiders, but for now it is very important for us to take care of the existing games and make those available to a broader audience," the company said in a statement. This means they are making a brand new Darksiders sequel regardless by my understanding of the quote.

The things it says in the title weren't actually addressed in the article, or in the source...

"Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition was just the start. Since we acquired the franchise we were looking for options for doing a DS3. The remaster was just a way to get some spotlight on the franchise again, reactivate the community and have a better starting position for DS3."

@whatsazerg: I agree, they're not going to sell anywhere near as much as the game did when it was first released so it's a terrible way to judge if people want a third game. At first glance it also seems like a horrid manipulation tactic "we put money into this unnecessary thing so buy it or we won't make a new one"

Not for nothing but if you own both Darksiders games the "redux" entry is only $6 on Steam. Now, here's a history lesson for those that don't know/don't care/don't remember. Darksiders 2 on PC was released at only 720p (even with a 1080 monitor it just blew up the image) and the gameplay was limited to 30fps. The port, in all good honesty, was NOT a good port. The game rocked and was a fantastic game but it did have its bugs. Now, the "Deathfinitive" Edition is here and it runs like a freaking beast. It's a full 1080 HD visuals, as should have been originally AND runs at 60fps and has a plethera of bug fixes. If you never owned the original D2 then by all means pick up the "redux". It's worth it. It also includes all the previous DLC released on STeam as well, so, there's that.

@naomha1: Hmm, they must have patched Darksiders 2 since the original release. I just ran it to double check and it's definitely running at 60 fps and 1080p on my PC. The version I'm playing appears to be the original version via Steam, as it doesn't say "redux" or anything in the title and description besides "Darksiders 2". Also, I haven't run into any major bugs, though I'm only about 8 hours in.

I recall reading that most of the DLC was not worth picking up, but hell for $6, I'd say go for it.

Well that is a terrible title and straight up wrong.

Many people who played the original won't play the remake because they've already played it. Especially in an action game because the gameplay and combat is the most important thing not the resolution.

Oh, bravo, good for you! Is that how it works? I've paid for both previous games and I don't need to pay again for a slight texture upgrade, you know, stuff that's supposed to be free. If that's the only way to play another Darksiders, then you can suck a duck for all I care.

Crazy!! Why the hell did they not just pull out all the stops and make a fantastic entry into the Darksiders series? Makes it look like a giant waste of cash when they go out and buy the series and then sit there and say that there will only be a sequel if an remaster of an older game sells?!!

Thank god they released a broken mess of this on PC to get as many people to buy it... This is just stupid idea, they did the same with Zone of the Enders and the HD remakes didn't do that well, partly because they were a mess on consoles at launch, and still is on 360 running at horrible framerates when even PS2 version was at 60fps. It's like they're trying to sabotage their own franchises for some reason
