Hulu Xbox 360-bound - Report

Video streaming service to begin charging, will come to Microsoft's console, Apple's iPad later this year, sources tell Reuters.

Since 2007, TV addicts everywhere have been able to get a free fix via the Hulu streaming service on their computers. Soon, they can on their Xbox 360 as well. Reuters reports that, as rumored, Microsoft is going to announce that the service is coming to the console, as well as Apple's iPad tablet computer. No date was mentioned for the announcement, but Microsoft's Electronic Entertainment Expo press briefing on Monday seems a likely candidate.

Coming Soon: TV on your Xbox 360...on your TV.
Coming Soon: TV on your Xbox 360...on your TV.

Unfortunately, it appears that Hulu will soon no longer be free. According to the news service's sources, Hulu will shortly begin charging for many of its hundreds of programs, although select new shows will remain gratis. Whether the joint venture between News Corp., NBC Universal, and Disney will charge a flat fee for the service or viewers will have to pay a la carte for single shows is unclear.

Reuters' sources also did not say if Hulu would charge an additional fee on the Xbox 360, although presumably the service will be available only to Xbox Live Gold members, who already pay $50 for a yearly subscription. Gold members can access Netflix video streaming at no additional cost from Microsoft but must already be subscribers to the DVD mail-rental company.

They do realize that with hulu at least they get ad time in. If they start charging and it becomes easier to just download rather than pay again then they wont even get that.

So ad-based revenue isn't enough? I would gladly watch a couple of ads if I get to choose exactly what I want to watch exactly when I want to watch it. Why the hell hasn't the TV industry figured out that on-demand service is what people want to see?

I love Hulu and watch it very often. However I have to say that if the service does start to charge I won't be able to continue with it. I mainly watch it for the anime. but I can go fansub for that if push comes to shove. As for current programing? Well certain shows just won't get watched.

Would be nice to have hulu on silver I guess I can see why they'd allow only gold I don't think any will lose here, regardless on if u pay or not most people are getting gold to play online this is just another feature like facebook and last.fm plus you've got a computer win win situation to me as long as they don't charge to actually view content fine with me.

@DuncanM908 that is actually a really good business plan and thats why you see PS3 failing and having to use a 'preminum' fee to make a profit compared to Microsoft who has been turning profit after profit in its 360 division even with losing millions of dollers due to RROD

Why are so many people getting mad at microsoft for adding hulu. hulu may want to start charging but that has nothing to do with xbox. as for it only being gold membership, i guess you guys can yell at them for that but they dont care and neither should you. its free on the computer. just hook your computer to the tv and you got your hd hulu. and if hulu starts charging just record your shows. i personally use hulu because i hate commercials and hulu just has 1 comercial every 15 to 20 mins and thats how they make their money. i doubt they will start charging, they know better and how do these rumors come out with out actual confirmation is amazing

I bet there will still be commercials and banner ads all over the place. Hulu was ok because it was free with less ads then cable. Quite frankly if they plan to charge then they need to get rid of all the ads, as I can stream Netflix without interruption.

DAMN YOU NBC!!! HULU was all I had and you got rid of all the shows that matter to me!!!!! DAMN you!! "My Name is Earl", "Heroes", Geezze.... Get rid of those reality TV shows!!!...... Ok back to the main point. It was cool until the having to pay for it part. I wish they would offer Crunchyroll on 360 that way I can watch all my new anime and never have to turn off my console.

Ummm Pay for Hulu now? Hulu is great, for something that is free. on top of internet charge, Xbox live fee.. oh and we have to pay for a wireless adapter as well. you would think that with all this cash Microsoft gets that they would fix the piss poor systems and make them a working machine. and why limit the use to Gold members???? i mean crap, if Xbox gets an internet browser i bet they will charge for that, just like they charge you to change you Gamertag.. PS3 sounds a whole lot better service wise.

I don't understand why Microsoft locks down Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, and soon Hulu to Gold Members Only. I already pay for Netflix. Why do I have to pay Microsoft to be able to enjoy Netflix on my Xbox 360? Soon I'll be able to download the FREE Netflix app for my new iPhone. I can already enjoy Netflix for FREE on Wii and PS3 and nearly any computer. The same can be said about the other services. There's no justification! Microsoft is using these popular services to force the XBL Gold membership on those that are interested in these features and don't have many other options. Meanwhile, they don't add anything actually worthwhile to the service. We'll see what all they announce at E3, but I'm not expecting much in the way of NXE updates.

Hi, I'm Microsoft. Instead of working on problems people have with malfunctioning console and hackers/modders on most online games, I instead choose to add mediocre features with no real purpose other than to place more ads on the Dashboard. GREATEST. BUSINESS PLAN. EVER.

Well, if it FREE for XBox Live Gold members, then I'm happy. Now I can watch Naruto in HD on my HDTV. If Hulu starts charging fees for most of their content they are going to literally lose millions of customers. I'm not lying. Their amount of traffic will drop in 1/2 on the day they implement those fees. If Hulu makes 25-30% of their content subscription base, they might be ok. If 80-90% of their content is subscription based, they can forget it. If all the content if free for XBox Live Gold members, then we're in business. I have a feeling it won't be though. How would M$ make money off of this?

@D3thN1gh7 Microsoft isn't charging for Hulu, nor do they own Hulu. There are no additional charges from MS (not even really rummored to charge either) to get Hulu. They're just saying to watch Hulu on 360 or internet you will soon need to pay NBC/GE (Hulu)

Actually, the price of Live is $40 for a year. Anyway, I think Hulu going to a pay scheme will make it a ghost town unless its a super cheap fee.

Wow. Well that sucks. I've had to use Hulu for a long time now because I don't have cable TV here. Can't really afford both it, and the internet. Now they're going to take that away too. :( And of course as many of you said, microsoft is now just trying to find more stuff to charge people for. This bs really needs to stop. Keep free stuff free please.

Is M$ going to open a streaming video in Japan, I'm currently living in Japan and had no access to netflix. I miss netflix. there are some dvd rentals here like netflix, but as far as I searched, they don't have streaming online. yahoo japan has free service, but all are old shows and movies, only occasionally new movies appear, and all content expire after period of time.

Kinda sucks because for those of us that just want a gold membership for playing games online might actually end up getting charged more for subs because of this. It's only a matter of time til microsoft starts raising prices for all this additional bs

I have to pay $50 a year to use Hulu on my Xbox 360, when I can get it for free on my PC. Are you kidding me? Microsoft must think their Xbox 360 is all that and a bag of chips. Good grief.

The problem is that people with money to burn actually pay for things like those, then influence their less fortunate friends to do the same. Buy the time this happens, sales numbers gets published and in a few months they've got 2 million users. Then the Band Wagon Jumpers start to want to be a part of this "new great thing" (Admit it, how many people out there know someone that got an Iphone just because they could afford it, and can't use the damned thing?). By now, now one cares about the faithful 50 million others out there that made the free version famous, they aren't making the company any money.

I'll probably use Hulu on the 360 if it's free with a gold account. I don't even mind if there are commercials with it (within reason, of course). But if I have to pay extra for it, then forget it.

And the death of Hulu begins. Seriously, why would anyone pay for this? The reason it's popular is because it's for people who don't watch lots of TV and only want to catch select shows without paying for tons of crap they don't want to watch.

TV addicts everywhere? This is great if your in the US, but if i'm not mistaken, there's many things on XBL that are still being restricted internationally. This is a major bummer to those paying $50 or however much it is over seas.

Yeah, I am so not going to use Hulu if they start charging, especially since I already pay for Netflix, and they have a lot of the stuff that is on Hulu, plus you can have them send you pretty much anything. I guess maybe I would switch to Hulu if they had more stuff streaming than Netflix, but I'm kind of doubting that will happen, and I would be kind of annoyed to be paying for something that I used to get for free so I probably wouldn't do it anyway. This just doesn't seem like very good idea for Hulu unless they have something really phenomenal up their sleeve for the people who are paying.

If Hulu starts requiring fees to watch im not using it anymore. It has commercials in the shows already, though not as many as broadcast TV. Thus, it should not have a fee because of this.

I like the idea that more TV is being offered via the Internet. I would love to ditch my satellite service and still get the shows I want. Netflix is a good start. Hulu might get us even closer.
