Hogwarts Legacy Sells 22 Million Copies, "Series" Of Other Harry Potter Games In The Works

Hogwarts Legacy could finish 2023 as the No. 1 best-selling game in the US.

Warner Bros. Games has announced that Hogwarts Legacy sold 22 million copies in 2023, including around 2 million in December alone, according to numbers supplied to Variety. The game achieved these results despite controversy surrounding author J.K. Rowling (who was not involved with the development of Hogwarts Legacy but stands to financially benefit from its success).

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment boss David Haddad said Hogwarts Legacy "brought Harry Potter to life in a new way for gamers where they could be themselves in this world, in this story."

Released in February, Hogwarts Legacy reached 12 million copies sold and $850 million in revenue over the game's first two weeks. It didn't take much longer for the game to cross 15 million copies sold and $1 billion in revenue to become the biggest game release of all time from Warner Bros.

Hogwarts Legacy was the No. 1 best-selling game in the US through November 2023, and December's numbers will be announced next week. If Hogwarts Legacy finishes No. 1 for the year, it will be the first time in about 15 years that a game other than a Call of Duty title or a Rockstar Games release topped the annual sales charts in the US.

Haddad said Hogwarts Legacy currently sitting at No. 1 is notable in part because Call of Duty and Rockstar titles normally dominate the charts. "That's a position that typically is held by one of these incumbent's sequel games and we're so proud that we've been able to break into the top ranks," he said.

Rumors have swirled that Hogwarts Legacy developer Avalanche will make a Hogwarts Legacy sequel, but nothing is confirmed at this stage and Haddad did not discuss if there could be a follow-up. He did, however, tease that Warner Bros. is developing "a series of other things" in the Harry potter series for new games. One of these is Quidditch Champions, a game that's now in the beta-testing phase.

Before this, Warner Bros. Discovery management said the success of Hogwarts Legacy demonstrates the staying power of Harry Potter. The company is moving ahead with plans for a seven-season Harry Potter live-action series, with each season telling the story of one of the books.

In other Harry Potter news, a documentary about Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe's stunt double, who was paralyzed on the set of The Deathly Hallows, is streaming now on Max.
