"High-Power" PS4 Model Something Sony Might Consider, Exec Says Hypothetically

Right now, it's just talk, but executive Masayasu Ito says it's an idea that Sony hasn't ruled out.

Sony might consider offering a "high-performance" model of the PlayStation 4, a system that the company has already repeatedly referred to as the "world's most powerful console." That's according to Sony Computer Entertainment senior vice president Masayasu Ito, who was asked for his thoughts in a new interview about offering a new PS4 model with better performance sometime down the road.

No Caption Provided

Speaking with Japanese gaming publication 4Gamer, as translated by DualShockers, Ito said because the PS4 uses X86 architecture (unlike the PlayStation 3's Cell processor), improvements to performance can be made over time. However, Ito stressed that Sony has no immediate plans to introduce a technically superior PS4 model; he also explained that the bigger question is if Sony would actually want to do this at all.

Offering a beefier PS4 model would conceivably split the PS4 audience, which doesn't sound like something Sony would want to do at this stage with the PS4 enjoying such strong sales and momentum. Whether or not Sony would have some solution to fracturing its audience remains to be seen. It's also important to note that Ito was speaking hypothetically after he was asked a direct question. Still, he said releasing a higher-power PS4 model alongside the existing one is an idea that "might be considered."

Consoles do not typically receive major updates of this nature. Revisions historically come in the form of things like better energy use and smaller overall form factor, while technical performance usually remains locked from the start of the console generation to the end.

GameSpot has reached out to Sony for additional comment on the matter. We'll update this post with anything we hear back.

There is some precedent, however, in the portable gaming world. In 2014, Nintendo released a New Nintendo 3DS model with improved CPU performance that it sells alongside the regular model. This beefed-up system plays all Nintendo 3DS games and many from the Nintendo DS and DSi libraries; some games, however, are playable only on the New Nintendo 3DS, as they leverage its increased power.

Would you be interested in a PS4 with improved performance? Let us know in the comments below.

They would be wise to consider this, because PC games were already visually superior at LAUNCH, so by the time the PS4 is at the end of it's lifecycle in 2018-2020, their games will literally be an entire generation behind.

1080p at 60fps on a 21:9 ultrawide monitor...the norm for PC and a pipedream for consoles.

@rwc117: That's been the case since the late 90s, it won't change with one hardware upgrade. What will happen is developers fine tuning their process to the hardware that's a known quantity. It always takes a while to find all the nooks and crannies that can be exploited. Compare the launch games of the 360 to the games that are coming out for it today.

I'd rather have a high-power X1 instead; poor thing can't even run Halo 2 at 1080P.

I think it would only work if all PS4 games worked on both consoles, just had better performance on the high-powered version.

@jamingray: Im thinking that is what Sony is thinking too. 3DS is doing right now, the developers make the game based off the updated system and let it work on the standard as well, just less technical

N3DS has only 1 exclusive retail game Xenoblade with no other to be announced. Its only purpose was enhanced 3D performance.

Splintering the market has never paid off in the long run, because developers make games based on attach rate, not system power, they will almost always choose the higher attach rate version of the console to develop for.

This is a very bad idea if Sony chooses to go this route, punishes early adopters and splinters the market with little to nothing to show for, since most devs will skip the new console exclusives anyway.

@kazeswen: They won't be splitting the console base. If they do this, it's basically a newer model of introducing "newer" hardware to us without labeling it "version 5".

@sainraja: If its called PS4 and has a faster hardware its splintering the userbase.

There is a reason why only 1 retail game exists exclusive for the N3DS, because the userbase who own N3DS is too small to be a viable market.

Whenever you splinter one generation of hardware into two, you end up losing third party support for the new hardware due to low attach rates.

Sega had the same problem with Sega CD and 32X.

If you want to improve the performance of hardware release a new generation but don't try to double dip into the same gen.

This was probably the last step towards console downfall. When you start segregating your "console" into "premium performance" and "standard performance"? You've just gone and undone everything consoles were designed to do in the first place. Be simple.

When people have to check what's in their PS4 to see if a certain game will run? Well.... you're just a poor man's PC now. Get your head out of your ass Sony.

@derceto: I think people are missing the point of the article. The games will run on BOTH systems, just that the game will look and better on an updated model. If you look at with Microsoft is doing with the 1 TB edition systems, you can see why Sony think this can be a good idea. But the fact remains that ALL games will be able to run on both systems

@donald10: Umm, no. Consoles are supposed to have a unified performance standard no game should ever look better on one system over another in the same generation.

That's the whole point of consoles, as soon as you start to create performance gaps between consoles in the same family you lose userbase, because you essentially become a PC, so why would people not just use a PC and steal the games for free.

Consoles have dominated due to one reason, unified performance. You remove unified performance and its all over.

PS. MS XB1 1TB model is the same as the other models in terms of performance so I don't know what you are talking about.

@kazeswen: because a PC is not a gaming machine. a PC has infinite uses and gaming is just one of those, but that comes at a higher cost anywhere from an extra $200 to an extra $1000, depending on your preference.

a console having a more constant, higher frame rate and a constant 1080p resolution(for games that support it) for only $50-100 more would still be in console range and still only offering console capabilities.

@elessarGObonzo: I don't know what you are talking about.

By releasing two SKUs for PS4 you essentially negate the one thing that separates consoles from PC in terms of gaming, which is that all console games run the same across the board.

As soon as you introduce different SKUs with different Specs you make console gaming the same as PC gaming, in which case its much easier and much more cost efficient to just get a gaming PC and steal all your games via piracy.

If there is nothing separating console gaming from PC gaming, then PC wins everytime because PC gaming is FREE due piracy.

The only way to compete against FREE games is by making consoles unified, so that everyone gets the exact same experience out of every game released. That was how console gaming was able to get such huge market shares to begin with,

What Sony suggests is to make console gaming tiered depending on system specs, sorry but if you do that, there is no reason for me to even stay in console gaming, when I can get all my PC games for FREE. The only reason I play console games is because I know that I will get a unified experience on every single game, that's the only reason. If I wanted a multi-tiered experience depending system specs, I'd be getting all my game for FREE on PC, why spend my hard earned money?

@kazeswen: obviously you don't game on PCs. you personally may be able to negate any moral standards and pirate all of your single player games. but the majority of people nowadays play online and that is impossible with pirated versions of almost any game.

even with that in mind; a regular OEM home-use system costs ~$500. if you want to upgrade that for good PC gaming it would still cost you >=$300 more for the new hardware and the same again for a good monitor to enjoy it on. most PC enthusiast of course will have built it themselves and saved $2-300 for even better components. but that is still ~$900 vs the much lower cost of consoles.

@kazeswen: very few games have pirate severs worth bothering with. the only ones that offer anything worthwhile are for older games that have no legal dedicated servers left open.

nice, you're a piece of shit. and nice you seem proud of it. and you are wrong about many things. including; a 4K display isn't shit if you're stuck at 24 or 30fps. a 144hz 1440p, even as small as 27", is much better. plus there are many "free" alternatives to software and many other aspects that cost $, and almost none of them are worth a crap compared to the paid versions.

if the "unified standards" of consoles are such a great option, why would you bother with a system that can supposedly run 4K FREE games? and all of them on FREE pirate servers? which btw don't exist for most newer games.

you just sound like some kid, or immature adult, spouting of their ass.

@elessarGObonzo: I know you're on crack when you propagate that my 4K TV is shit compared your 27" 1440p crap. 4K is 4K, son. Don't matter if I'm playing 720, 1080 game on it, 4K makes everything look better, ever heard of upconverting? Just cause you got 4K don't mean you need every game running native at 4K, even 1080 looks sweet when running on a 4K TV. So don't be BSing me, kid.

I'm a piece of shit, cause I like to save my money and I'm not afraid to admit it. If you call being smart a piece of shit, yeah, that's how I can afford my sweet sweet 4K TV. From not spending money on anything that I can get for FREE.

So, explain to me Einstein. Why on Gods green Earth would I pay 60 bucks a game and another 10 bucks a month for PS Plus to play games on an multi-tiered performance system when I can play the same games for FREE without any PS Plus fees on the same multi-tiered PC?

The ONLY, and I repeat ONLY reason I play games on console is due to the unified performance system, you start introducing 2 tiers of games a nerfed version and a elite version, and guess what I'll save my 60 bucks and my 10 a month fee and use that towards my pimped out PC.

You're crazy if you think I'm gonna pay to play nerfed games on Sony's expensive Plus servers when the alternative is FREE.

You can be a saint all you want, but I'm loyal to no one, but my money.

@elessarGObonzo: A gaming PC doesn't cost more than a console. You can build a faster rig for the same price. There are quite a few builds called potato mashers and console killers that fit the bill. Also, the new skylake i7's integrated GFX are about the same speed as the APU in the ps4. That means an upgrade would only be 100-200 bucks if you get a midrange gpu. 370-380, 950-960 are all under 200 bucks and is a massive gap in console performance. You also seem to think you need a monitor for the PC, your TV is a monitor and you can just use it. SO no extra cost there :)

@razeandjadith: but, this was not about baselining a "console killer" system. this was about upgrading a home use OEM system to be gaming grade. and the point of adding a "good monitor" to that system is to get good resolution at good frame rates, not being stuck at 900 or 1050p on a lower tiered screen that most OEM systems come with.

added what an enthusiast would want at bare minimum and what it may cost them. not a system that runs medium-high settings with <45fps at 1080p. and even if you are using an hdtv for a display you are still stuck at 60fps for anything <=1080p and 24 or 30fps for anything higher. that is still not what i would call enthusiast grade.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a console where hardware is static and hence everyone have the same experience and should have no compatibility issues.

@Gamer_4_Fun: It all depends on the timing. If they were to introduce one right now they would fail. If they were to introduce one, say in, 3 years time, they could be successful. That is if the market doesn't move dramatically away from what we all consider traditionally to be a console.

If they do this I will personally boycott Sony and hope everyone does the same. If Sony were to do this they officially spat in faces of everyone that bought the "older version" (beta tested their product and paying for it too).

SONY should offer all of its customers who bought the PS4 from their main website a free upgrade.
However I believe that since Eddy made this article that this is not true at all and mostly click-bait. Otherwise we would have a major difference in performance on a same game.

@solarchainsawhd: of course it's all hypothetical. but you would've rather they waited another 2+ years to release the console at all than to have had the lower quality version all this time?

most smart phones don't offer free upgrades directly from the manufacturer but almost everyone rushes out to buy every new iteration ~2x a year. this would be the same premise. i'm sure Gamestop and others would offer a trade-in value on the old version just like most phone distributors do. if you don't have the money, you stick with the lower quality version. if you have the money, you'd get the slightly more expensive higher quality newer version.

@solarchainsawhd: Look, you have to understand that technology is improved over time and to keep up with it you're going to have to pay. It comes down to which model you prefer. The beefed-up PS4 would be in place of the PS5, if they were to go down this road.

Did you complain about having to pay again to get the PS4? I mean, you paid for the "older version (the PS3).

@bojan_sokol:

1.PCs are meant to be upgraded at free will

2. The playing experience was always different between players due to these component differences (in PC gaming)

3.Consoles were never upgrade-able and their main selling point was "equal gaming experience in the community" (When you play a game for example FIFA or some racing game, you will lose or win not depending if your graphics card or processor strength over your opponents.)

4.In consoles you are not disadvantaged when playing any other player in terms of components and console performance, only your skill...

5. PC is composed with many different manufacturers (Nvidia, Intel, ASUS...AMD)....SONY PS4 is SONY.

@solarchainsawhd: "Consoles were never upgrade-able" I think it is just you are old enough, but there was a thing called the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis with all it's upgrade modules.

Also the 3DS has two different models, and the new model has more power.

the change could also only mean that the ps4 rev 1 will be 1080p with the same framerate and the current one is only 720p, which would suck for current ps4 owners but having 20ish fps in games cause sony wants to be 1080p on a device that can't handle it also suck

sure why not

devs having the same specs to work with now as they did in 2007 for the ps3 maxed out the abilities of the console long ago.

if some games were not supported by older ps4's it is basically a glorified ps5 without all the fanfare and effort of launching a totally new system which seems good for Sony.

let's just not have this system for a few more years though
