Hideo Kojima Discusses Split With Konami

"I intend to keep pushing the creative envelope until the day I die."

Hideo Kojima, the creator of the acclaimed Metal Gear series, has spoken about his time with ex-publisher Konami. In 2015, the revered director went through a public breakup from the company he'd worked with for nearly 30 years.

"I have more freedom now because the final decision comes down to me," he told BBC Radio 1's Newsbeat program. "This company is not listed on the stock exchange so we don't need to worry about pleasing investors. We can just concentrate on making good games."

Now Playing: Death Stranding - The Game Awards 2016 Trailer

In a separate interview with IGN, Kojima reflected on his career up to this point.

"The me that stands here now is the product of the past 53 years of my life," he said. "Everything I experienced over 53 years; movies I've seen, books I've read, music I've listened to, games I've played, people I've met and the 30 years spent in this industry, have formed who I am. Not one of these things has been without purpose, including my experience creating games at Konami.

"I'm embarking on a new challenge with a fresh slate, but I intend to keep pushing the creative envelope until the day I die. I believe my experiences over the past 53 years won't lead me astray."

After leaving Konami in 2015, the director founded his new development studio, Kojima Productions, as an independent company. The studio is partnering with Sony for its first project, Death Stranding.

In splitting from Konami, Kojima left behind both Metal Gear and the now-canceled Silent Hills project. His partner for that game, Guillermo del Toro, has since repeatedly said "F**k Konami." Del Toro appears in Death Stranding, but is not creatively involved.

Kojima has previously spoken about leaving Konami and his memories of his time developing Metal Gear Solid whilst there. Read his thoughts in our in-depth interview here.

I don't think he will discuss his split with Konami, after all he worked there for almost 30 years, I doubt he will say bad things about them

I wouldn't consider this a discussion about the split between him with Konami so much as a statement of relief that his company wont be held back due to not being listed in the stock market, Nice click bait though.

I'm partly glad Metal Gear is done. Too convoluted a story that was made up as he went along. His ideas are excellent though, so looking forward to new stuff.

@alexander_mark: I am seeing hundreds of clickbait articles telling you why it totally is Metal Gear Solid still. I can see all the fanboys convincing themselves it is Metal Gear Solid, and I can see the review sites saying it's the best MG ever!!

"This company is not listed on the stock exchange so we don't need to worry about pleasing investors. We can just concentrate on making good games." - Hideo Kojima.

What else is there to say? Anyone here have any additional questions? EA, Ubi, etc... you you know why their "AAA" games are all shit.
Man, I miss the days where game companies were not on the stock exchange. I am so sad for you people that never had the chance to play such games. Well actually, I am glad, less suffering for you guys.

@phili878: There are plenty of creative and inventive games being released today coming from independent developers. It's not like people just have AAAs to play.

@phbz: True, but the independent developers have a harder time because they can't afford the same level of programmers that work for money, rather than for the love of gaming (totally understood, the world of today requires that). So yeah, I see your point but if independent devs. had the resources of big companies, they would make so much better games.

@phili878: Well but you can't have the cake and eat it. To have financial security you "have" to go with the known formulas... because WE the gamers kind of suck, it's our decision to go for the eye-candy, shallow games.

My opinion is that indies today have much more resources than even big developers had in the good old days. Mainly because the technology and distribution channels are much more accessible. But I can agree, in a way AAA are suffocating the market but again, it's really our fault.

@Jag-T1000: I am sure you were never really the brightest in your class. This guy never cries, in fact, not even in the article above did you notice him crying (doubt you even read it), but most importantly, it took him over 1.5 years to basically say something about what happened. Western people would have already cried, sued, called their mommy and daddy for attention, and this man, remains cool about it.

@Commiesdie: In all fairness the amount of clickbait articles of old interviews with Kojima really cant be a indication of how much he cries. Judging by the way you reply here you probably cry a hell of a lot more hahaha. Every day

The way Konami treated him and how he was not allowed to attend an award show where his game was nominated was disrespectful in my opinion and I wouldn't blame him if he bad mouthed them but he didn't he just moved on and started a new studio.

It is funny how Guillermo Del Toro is the one who keeps cursing Konami.

@guibova: "This company is not listed on the stock exchange so we don't need to worry about pleasing investors. We can just concentrate on making good games." Hideo Kojima.... Konami wanted to please investors, Hideo wanted to please gamers...man, how simple of an article do people have to make these days for people to understand. If you can add 1 + 1 together you know what they fought over. He wanted to please gamers, Konami wanted (still wants) to please investors (same as EA, Ubi, and all that shit).... I knew social media and all of that shit causes the modern day human to turn into troglodytes again...

@phili878: Thanks friend for calling me dumb... but the article is titled

Hideo Kojima Discusses Split With Konami

Even in those lines you extracted from this very complex article that I couldn't quite grasp the meaning, there is not a direct mention about splitting with Konami. Only the obvious statement that if a company is not listed in the stock exchange, they don't need to worry about pleasing investors (shock!) ...

"I split with Konami because they did not give me lunch for two years" , "I split with Konami because I defecated on the floor once and they didn't like it", "I Split with konami because I am a diva and I couldn't care less" ... Now that is discussing spliting with Konami.

Muah!

Reminds me a little of that Picasso napkin story…

-The story goes that Picasso was sitting in a Paris café when an admirer approached and asked if he would do a quick sketch on a paper napkin. Picasso politely agreed, swiftly executed the work, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a rather significant amount of money. The admirer was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you a minute to draw this!” “No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years”-

Our work is the accumulation of all our experiences whether it be our triumphs, our falls, or just our day to day influences. Hopefully Kojima will take all these experiences and use them to help him craft a masterpiece.

I know a lot of people in the industry are curious as to how his first new game since his departure from konami will pan out.

@videogameninja: He doesn't look his age. Kind of a shame to found a studio and only have the time to make 3 games before retiring. Then again, it might be successful enough to outlive him for a long time to come.
