Here's How Diablo 3's New Challenge Rifts Work

Blizzard explains one of patch 2.6.0's new features.

Among the features on the way to Diablo III in the upcoming patch 2.6.0 are Challenge Rifts. Blizzard has provided new details explaining exactly how they work, and they sound like a good change in pace from the usual style of play.

Challenge Rifts do away with the normal randomization of Diablo in favor of a set experience. A Challenge Rift challenges you to beat another player's Greater Rift run time. The game takes a snapshot of a Greater Rift run--complete with that Rift's layout and the character's gear and skills--and then tasks other players with finishing it more quickly than the original player.

Now Playing: Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - First Look: Challenge Rifts

A new Challenge Rift will be released every Monday, and a selection of crafting materials and Blood Shards are available to anyone who can beat the target time. This reward is available only once per week, but you're free to replay the Rift as much as you want, as you'll be able to compete with friends on weekly leaderboards.

As shown in the video above, choosing to take part in a Challenge Rift won't immediately launch you into one. You can first reassign the keys that your skills are assigned to (but not change which skills you have access to) and test the setup out on two groups of enemies: one comprised of a single tough enemy, and one consisting of a bunch of weak enemies.

In addition to patch 2.6.0, the Necromancer Pack is also on the way to Diablo III. This is positioned as a "content pack" rather than an "expansion pack" along the line of Reaper of Souls. Its primary addition is the Necromancer class, which returns from Diablo II. Blizzard recently revealed the Necromancer-specific Legendary effects and Set items that are on the way. You can see the sets in this video or read the details about all of this on Blizzard's website.

The necromancer class is tempting but as long as there is no offline mode then I am still not interested.

However if you do indeed do the Diablo 2 remaster as you said before then I can at least accept it.

I'd rather wait for the massive update that PoE is doing to get out of beta and play that. It looks far more interesting and isn't costing anything extra.

Horrendous. Now you feel all your effort means nothing. Click to try out more builds without playing at all. Miss old D2, even D3 vanilla days. (btw i'm not saying I liked D3 vanilla, but better than this crap)

@Leonagard: Not that you would even need guides with D3 it's so dumbed down. Why let the player decide how to develop their character? Just give them everything and force them to swap skills around with a limited hotbar.

@Raidendude153: here we go again and again... PoE players care too much about d3 not been the game they want it to be that brings me sorrow... I like booth. D3 when I want to relax have fun... PoE when I want to grind to death till give up again and again on SSF with no guides! I hate trading in ARPGS... that destroy the fun of finding. I knew that the AH in d3 where the cause of its doom before it launch... I will be buying the Necro for sure! Will be playing the "new" storydriven 1 playtrough 10 act of PoE for sure! STOP that bs!

@Greyden: If you grew up with D1 and D2, you'd realize D3 is a shell of what it could have been, and comparatively to PoE (a 100% free product,) the latter is better in almost every single aspect.

Where are the runewords? It took this long to release a character that was available in d2? Please.

@Raidendude153: runewords are in the same place the SoJ and D2jsp based broken economy is; rotting in the 9th circle of hell where anyone who ever experienced them can hopefully forget the horror they wrought.

Runewords were not a good example of how D2 was better than D3.

The D3 necro is a completely different character from D2 as well. Many of their skills are only similar in name.

I played this shit out of D1 and D2, and you need to ditch the nostalgia goggles if you think D3 isnt better in many ways.

@Richardthe3rd: I can assume you haven't spent more than a couple hours on PoE? I got d3 on launch and it was a veritable shitshow, to say the least. Real money auction house, botched down skilltree/spell system looool.

Any serious fan of Diablo and what their true mechanics are would unequivocally enjoy Path of Exile.

Why anyone would pay for an expansion for a game that is worse than a free one is beyond me.

@Raidendude153: "I got d3 on launch"

And never played again, right? LOL

PoE is great if you like the concept of killing yourself with grinding and running into a brick wall in end game content. And the gameplay being worse than even D2's doesn't help.

If I want to play Diablo 2 I'll boot it up; it still works and it shits all over PoE to this day.

@Richardthe3rd:

Made an account just to reply to this retardation. I've played every season of Diablo 3, as well as hundreds of hours of PoE. PoE is easily better than D3 in every aspect save for few.

Now to address the retardation I mentioned earlier...

"PoE is great if you like the conept of killing yourself with grinding"

LOL as opposed to what? Hitting max level within an hour on D3? And endlessly running the same rifts over and over and over and over again? Quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever read. The reason D3 is so god damn boring is because after the first day of a season you realize you'll be doing the exact same thing everyday for the next 3 months and the only thing that will change is your paragon level. Seriously...gtfo.

@rawbee1988: OH, oh shit I'm so sorry! I forgot!

PoE is MUCH better because you can focus solely on getting gear you can trade, rather than playing a game because it's fun and YOUR character actually improves.

So difference is -

PoE - keep grinding for stuff you can trade so you can spend 50% of your time managing your inventory, because the alternative is gameplay with shit animations and no impact that is actually worse than D2 18 years ago.

D3 - keep grinding because the gameplay is actually fun and you find upgrades yourself with comparatively very little inventory management required. Doesn't look like someone animated the game for their high-school project. When you pull that slot in a rift, there's actually a chance you'll get something useful.

Hey man, if you like settling for a game that is literally a shittier version of something that released 18 years ago, go right ahead and enjoy.

Pray to your PoE gods that Blizzard doesn't update D2, because if they do, PoE becomes irrelevant overnight. The whole time I played it I wanted to stop and roll a Poison Necro or a Javazon, because 18 years of playing those characters was waaaay more fun than that shit.

Enjoy your low standards, and thanks for making an account just for me.

@Raidendude153: thats great, PoE needs it. I hope people who enjoy the game get some more grinding out of it.

And it's nice to know another ARPG has a shitty enough rng mechanic to resuscitate d2jsp like PoE has. Seriously, the fact that you even mentioned the RMAH in D3 is pretty hypocritical.

Again, I'll just play D2 if I want that type of game, not a clone with worse gameplay.

17 years of innovation and PoE is still worse than D2, despite trying as hard as it can to be just like it.

Ironic.

At least D3 tried to be it's own thing. PoE is so derivative it hurts.

@Richardthe3rd: You have the mental fortitude of a wet sponge. Make little sense, and make even less nonsensical claims with no basis to stand on. Even without empirical data you can see that the player-base for D3 is shit. Even without doing extensive research you can see how pathetic the implementations they've made over the years have been.

D3: Hey guys, I know it's been a long, long time, but here, we have a Necromancer for you, enjoy!

PoE: Hey guys, I know we update our content on a regular basis, but here, have 6 more acts full of content, enjoy.

Then you have this brain dead individual above ^: I don't care, the game looks like D2, and D3 is fun(to me) so it's the superior game(not based on any actual data of course).

Yeah, the downs is strong with this one.

@rawbee1988: ROFL.

Diablo 3 player base in RoS is strong. There's no "empirical data" (just lol at your use of this in an informal debate like this, seriously get real), so it's anyone's guess how many people are online until Blizz decides to clear that up. In the absence of truth, biased fucks, like you, will use their imagination to fill in the blanks, right?

But before you do, consider this:

1 million unique players for PoE in December 2016. That's including alts, smurfs, etc., on that F2Pgame.

PC version of D3 has sold 30 million copies. Each season, it only has to see 3% of them return to beat that. And it's a PAID game.

Still think D3's dead? Make your inferences, and tell me again who the downs is strong with? LOL

But if you want to get into a public game and play, you will have zero issues doing so. If you want to join an active clan with many members, you will have zero issues doing so.

You guys who want to hate D3 so hard are adorable. And the arguments you use are so flimsy it's sad.

But I guess it must couldn't be anything but sad that a game with so much "depth" (read, shit you fidget with that has marginal impact on the game) gets the shit kicked out of it so frequently by a new season, or the re-release of a character originally around 20 years ago.

I guess PoE needs all that crap to compensate for the crap gameplay. D3 is just fun and doesn't bog itself down with that.

@Richardthe3rd: You keep saying it's worse than D2 which is opinionated falsehood at best.

D3 tried to be its own thing? Like with a real money auction house and a crafting system with basal interchangable MMO skill system? How unique, PoE has a 1k+ point skill tree on top of entirely revamping the skill system with socketed gems.

Ironic, enjoy your blissful ignorance my guy, the industry feeds off of obsequious consumer whores like yourself.

@Raidendude153: I'm glad you mentioned "ironic, blissful ignorance" after mentioning shit that was removed from the game years ago, like that argument is still relevant.

Hey, I know! Let's talk about the shape PoE was in while it was in beta, with it's garbage animation and non-existent end-game, and pretend like that's a fair assessment of the game now!

Let's absolutely talk about the RMAH, and how it was removed years ago!! It's a great segway to talk about how much forum gold the average PoE player buys on D2Jsp RIGHT NOW.

Grats on that 1k point skill tree; I'm glad dumping a point into a passive with almost zero noticable effect on how your character plays excites you. I'll gladly take my "MMO lite" skills that have a dramatic impact on how my character plays and how they synergize with gear. I prefer MMO lite skills to MMO auction house simulators like PoE.

Enjoy a system that wastes your time and requires hours of inventory management. I enjoy the reverse ratio of gameplay to inventory fiddling in D3.

@Richardthe3rd: Funny, that gameplay you mention is rather linear and piecemealed through expansion packs while PoE is about to release its biggest content pack ever, for you guessed it: 100% free.

I've played plenty of D3, and this "depth of gameplay" just involves nephalim portals and grinding out paragon levels to pretend the items have any effect whatsoever on your linear set of 6 different skills with alternate "runes." Enjoy playing through the acts just like PoE, but with half of the acts and no character development.

"But mah inventory management is too tuff!" Lol, what's an item based ARPG worth that doesn't have any items? Whatever they're charging for D3, I guess.

@Raidendude153: In terms of content, I can go to a steak house, order a filet, then ask the obese chef who just prepared it to come to my table and shit on a plate. I guarantee that chef will provide more content.

And I can guarantee which of the two plates I'll choose to eat every time.

I played the same content in D2 for over 10 years, because it was GOOD. I played a portion of that content in PoE for a month before I couldn't take the boredom anymore.

Meanwhile, let's pretend D3 hasn't added new content after RoS released and that it's exactly the same as it was during vanilla!!!

PS: that little quip about inventory management being "tuff," was cute, but it wasn't that any part of PoE's auction house simulation was hard. It's that it was pull-your-dick-off boring with extremely unexciting progression built into it (well, unless you resort to D2Jsp, a point you should absolutely continue tip-toeing around). But if the proverbial ARPG equivalent of watching paint dry (or paying real money) is your thing, go nuts.
