Heavy Rain demo pours onto PSN

PlayStation Store Update: Sampler for Quantic Dreams' adventure leads light release week; Patapon 2, COD: World at War maps, Trine given price cuts.

Sony's PlayStation Network isn't receiving much by way of new games this week. What it will see, though, is a "heavily" anticipated demo. With the full game due out exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on February 23, a free trial of Quantic Dreams' action adventure Heavy Rain is now available for download through the PlayStation Network.

The Heavy Rain demo features two chapters from the full game. The first follows FBI profiler Norman Jayden, who has been brought in to help local investigators capture the mysterious Origami Killer. Gamers will also fill the gumshoes of Scott Shelby, a private investigator hired by the families of the Origami Killer's victims.

How can you all be so calm when it's about to RAIN?!
How can you all be so calm when it's about to RAIN?!

Elsewhere on the PlayStation Network, gamers will find a number of deals on previously released games and content. Sony has issued a permanent $5 price cut for Patapon 2, bringing the PSP rhythm game down to $14.99. Temporary price cuts are in effect for the Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack ($19.99, down from $24.99) and Trine ($9.99, down from $19.99).

A trio of PSone Classics has been added to the Network as well, all sharing the standard $5.99 price point. Released late in the original PlayStation's life cycle, 2003 driver Dirt Jockey lets gamers tool around with such heavy machinery as a dump truck, bulldozer, and crane. Bullfrog's critically panned PS port Populous: The Beginning is also available, as is Sim Theme Park. PSone Classics can be played on both the PS3 and PSP.

On the PSP storefront, gamers can pick up demos for echoshift and SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo 3, which arrives in stores next week. Handheld gamers can also pick up the Crazy Taxi and Full Auto 2 "Driving Me Crazy" Bundle, which packages both games together for $19.99. A Sonic Rivals "Set My Pulse Racing" Bundle, which includes the first and second installment in the series, is also available for $29.99.

A full list of the week's deals and new PlayStation Store content, including themes, wallpapers, demos, and add-on content, is available on the official PlayStation Blog.

What I really laugh about is the people who need to do repetave things that are action packed. Running around shooting the same people over and over again. Then claim that games like this are TOO slow, Too mondain, and TOO boaring. Well, they do not have to play. I just hope more people give it a chance.

@ LuongoRox1 Amen. This game is not for kids or or those that need instant mindless action. The controls may be a little complicated but thats what makes this game so innovative. The story was pretty good. Those glasses and glove that the FBI agent had were pretty sweet.

@CMakaCreative The only people that NEED that instant gratification will be all the 10 year olds. They'll all just pop MW2 back in, and does it really matter? This game is not meant for them. I'm really excited for Heavy Rain. It's going to be something very different.

This game will be EPIC!!! I got the demo last week from the HR website, and it blew me away. The controls are something to get used to, but they're not too frustrating that it would make you not want to play the game. I want Crazy Taxi on my PS3 too!

Sweet. Too bad I don't have a PS3 =( This is THE game I've been waiting to come out since it was first announced. QuanticDream clearly raises the bar when it comes to creating a unique and innovating experience in videogames. Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy is a clear proof of that. Hope you guys who own PS3's enjoy the hell out of it.

For people who are on the fense...I read the IGN review. They said the game starts off really slow. Which means I can see a lot of people returning this game on the same day. People want instant gratification. That's gonna hurt this game. But it also said that when it starts to pick up, it's gonna be hard to put down. So I hope people will stick with it thru the slow start & enjoy what should be a great game.

@njp62 Yea, for some reason innovative games or games that are out of the ordinary, in a good way, dont sell that well. Look at Demons souls for example, AMAZING game but due to the nature of the game, its not selling like hot cakes. Hope Heavy rain has better luck.

People usually reject a new control scheme when it comes around, that is until they've become comfortable using it. Dating myself a bit, but when the dual shock came out everybody was like... "Whats with these stupid sticks?" If you give the game itself a chance maybe the controls will be your last concern. To say a game is going to suck because it doesn't control like YOU think it should is ridiculous. It controls exactly how the developers intended.

Heavy Rain is the game that I have been waiting for since Gabriel Knight, FF VII and MGS I - IV. Ten minutes in the demo proved me right in my heated anticipation. If your concern is the control mechanisms, look at it this way. This simulation is meant to break down the barriers that so many games have spoon feed us. The control is no more complex then Metal Gear. If you don't enjoy it, then don't enjoy it. But it is a game like this, that has restored my faith in the evolution of the gaming world. I would be extremely proud to be part of this development team, even if just from the consumers perspective. There is only one fear and this would be for any game new to the market... bugs.

There's something that bugs me about Heavy Rain but also reels me in. I don't get the control scheme at all (not exactly QTE yet certainly not conventional), but the story and feel of the game are excellent. I agree with the guy in the comments saying about the inhaler example: control-wise it certainly seems vastly over-complicated.

What kind of funny cigarettes are Quantic Dreams smoking? I played 5 minutes of the demo. Jeez, the geezer with the asthma and you have to SHAKE the controller to get him to use the inhaler. I have asthma myself and a controller weighs much more than an inhaler. So how does the shaking of a heavier object simulate the usage of a lighter object. Im sorry to burst anyone's bubble on this, but Quantic Dreams need to get with the program and give people a game you can ACTUALLY play with decent control mechanics. It's even worse than the control mech for Fahrenheit, and I traded that in after a couple of hours of trying to get a kid to climb a fence using the most convoluted thumbstick manoeuevres only a madman can dream up. There I've said it. No goin' back now. Im avoiding this like the Plague.

Interesting demo. Odd control scheme, but I understand why they made it that way, rather than simple button pushes. The detective elements were pretty slick. I'm undecided about buying it. Part of me wants to get it to support the developers effort for making something diferent than what's out there. Hmmm..

Exclusives like these reminds me of the times when the exclusives on my PS2 rocked, now most of them are multi-platform(damn 360). However, how much we fanboys lose, we'll gain more exclusives to screw over those 360 FPS-nutheads. At least until, Halo:Reach is released that is. That to mention there's the multi beta in May. *sigh*

I've just played the demo, and I can see it getting stale before the end because if the story dosen't keep me interested I don't think I can last for more that 30 minutes playing this. Its all quick time events, is it an immersive experince, just becaue they make you do everyting from using your inhaler and I don't know was there anything in the gameplay that was good.

Look at the graphics, it actually looks like Sim 3, worth the $60? if you got no concept of value, you would say yes and I would say sad.

I like the demo a lot. It would be cool if they did some kind of episodic content or something for it too. Like release short stories to play through as dlc for $10-20. It would probably be hard to do in a sensible way though so it will never happen.

The demo I think was amazing, I can see how it can wear thin though, I can only hope that it carries the same weight as the demo did and hold the excitement.

I liked the HR demo. I'll pick it up in a year or so of Craigslist or used at a store when it's about $20. Can't justify spending $60 on a short adventure game.

loved the demo but i just cant see my self spending 60$ on a 8-10 hour game especially with BFBC2 coming. BF will keep me entertained for much longer and i dont have alot of money to spend so thats the way the cookie crumbles for me. Def gonna try to pick it up when its cheaper though.

I also just played the demo and I was completely thrilled. The fighting seems to be easy, because you thought it is just going to be interactive button pressing. Believe me, it is not that easy. It's not that difficult, but it's totally fun and challenging. Can't wait to play the full game. I already pre-ordered it.
