HBO Go Comes To Xbox One Sling TV in Time for Game of Thrones

Here's how you'll watch Game of Thrones on your Xbox without paying for cable.

No Caption Provided

You'll be able to watch the new season of Game of Thrones on your Xbox One without having to pay a cable provider thanks to a new deal between Sling TV and HBO.

The companies today announced that Sling TV, which you can download as an app for your Xbox One, will be the first live Internet TV service to offer scheduled and Video-On-Demand (VOD) content from HBO.

Sling TV and HBO didn't give an exact date, but said that the service will be ready before the season premieres of Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones on April 12.

Sling TV, which requires no contract or extra hardware installation, features channels such as ESPN and ESPN 2, as well as TNT, TBS, Food Network, HGTV, Cartoon Network, and Disney Channel. It's available for $20 a month, and getting the HBO content will cost you an extra $15 a month.

This is the same price it will cost you to subscribe to HBO's content through Apple TV or HBONow.com, as was first revealed at an Apple media event in March.

Basically, if all you care about is HBO, paying the $20 a month for Sling TV plus the extra $15 a month for HBO is much cheaper than cable.

Sony, by comparison, is offering PlayStation Vue television streaming service for $50 to $70 depending on the bundle, and so far none of the bundles include HBO.

For lots more on Sling TV and the way it could impact traditional cable providers, be sure to read GameSpot sister site CNET's in-depth coverage.

No joy outside US for either Sling or HBO (perhaps VPN may become handy)...

If all you want is HBO GO then you would just pay 15 bucks for HBO Go instead of the additional 20 for Sling TV. LOL.

<< LINK REMOVED >> it sounds like this will be the live HBO channel, like you would normally get through cable. Whereas HBO NOW is a streaming service just like GO.

I'm thinking other networks, premium or not, will jump on board with the 'add-on' mentality...

...aaaaaaaaand eventually, it will cost as much as cable. So.. there's that. Blech.

It's not cheaper at least not on Verizon. Getting cable+Internet is only a few dollars more than getting just Internet and there's better deals on the movie channels. You get better quality too.

It's like these cable companies just flat out don't get it or they just don't WANT to get it.

People want a la carte cable, people are cutting the cord everyday, subscribers are dropping so hard and so fast the cable companies are scrambling to save the traditional tv model and ignoring what the people want.

When HBO announced they were going to allow subscribtions without cable people were so happy, finally a lot of them would have an alternative instead of pirating it (it's the most pirated show every year).

Then HBO announced it, 15 bucks a month (That's almost TWICE the cost of netflix streaming, with not nearly the selection). Then they announced only on apple, which again cuts out a huge part of their market.

It's like, who in the hell is running these companies that are just so outof touch with what people have been wanting, asking for, bgegging for?

Let us pick what WE want, pay for what we want at a REASONABLE price without restricting it to a service or specific region

Do comapnies just not get it? If they were to price HBO go at say, 5-8 bucks a month, open to EVERYONE around the world and supported ALL devices (PC, mac, roku, sling, etc etc) they would make SOOOOOOOO much moremoney while also making their customers happy as hell.

But nope, they just want to keep on doing what they are doing, and then they want to keep on whining and whining about "wah, we keep losing customers to netflix and hulu, wah wah pirates blah blah."

Sorry for my rant, just so tired of seeing something so obvious and yet they just turn a blind eye to it and then whine about other "issues" instead of doing what the majority of the market wants them to.

What you say sounds reasonable, but we should remind ourselves that the likelihood of their company is on the line, and they invest hundreds of millions of dollars in researching, marketing, partnerships, and forecasting their market.

To assume we, as a simple user, might know the best business strategy for billion dollar companies is either ignorance of hubris.

However, we do know what we like, and that's all we can share with them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The music industry is already a prime example of this exact same problem.

For years they fought against the internet, services like Napster, etc. Where people could buy "just" the songs they want.

They tried so hard to keep forcing people to buy entire albums at 15 bucks or more , even if that person only like 1-2 songs on the album.

Then you got Itunes and more and more online options, being able to buy only the specific song you wanted at 99cents or the entire album if you wanted.

This year? Digital music sales outperformed physical cd/album sales.

The market for digital is huge, both music and video games (look at Steam) have shown us time and again how big this market is. Yet traditional tv business models are still trying so hard to make it hard for peopel to legit buy "just" what they want and be able to watch it digitally through their roku or browsers or however they wish.

If you allowed all of those people who pirate Game of Thrones to be able to say, buy it on a 3 dollar or so episode (or say a "season pass" for 20 bucks) I think you'd turn a lot of those non-paying viewersinto legit paying customers.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not a rant, it's the truth. I have felt this way for years and KNEW this would happen. Instead of having a few "super sites" that have most of everything, we are going to have 2000 different sites for one type of media with a monthly cost. Oh, doesn't have exactly what you want? Here, get these two other sites you have to sign up and pay for... It's so stupid.

These companies are going to botch this so bad that people will just give up altogether and stick with just 1-2 sites and we will never know how good all of this really could have been. I want sling TV, but I already have Netflix and hulu which covers most of what I want already. If I add sling tv and HBO, I'll be back up to $60 a month which I don't want to do. I have amazon as well, but that is so not worth the money imo. I only got it because I got a deal on a year sub, which I won't be redoing.

I was hoping someone would figure this out by now but it looks like its going to continue to be a mess for now. I agree though, it's mind boggling to say the least.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Really cheap?

Compared to Netflix, Amazon prime, and Hulu, HBO is both more expensive and offers far less content outside of their own shows.

Also hardly make anything? You mean from all the people that pirate the hell out of GoT (where HBO sees jack diddly) vs offering them the ability to get it (IE no region restrictions) at a resaonable price would make HBO less? I don't see how that's possible.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It surpasses the hype as far as I'm concerned. You are probably going to have to watch it more than once as it's super complex but even more entertaining. I have seen each episode 3-4 times and I still pick up things I missed before. Best show I ever watched. But that's me. If you don't care for fantasy this might not be for you.

I thought Apple had an exclusive deal with Time Warner where only Apple TV owners could access HBO Now for 3 months. Is this an April Fools joke?

@chazzin Idk this is bait but you sound like a fanboy. If not then if I can recall, ps4 has only one good exclusive which is Bloodborne and that's even debatable. The rest are ports of ps3 games which most people played. PS had more "quantity" of exclusives last gen, but this generation Xbox got more exclusives and better "quality".

P.S. I sound like a fanboy too lol. But spitting facts ;)

Idk How to reply to people lol. New to this

It's too bad the cheapest way to get high speed Internet is to bundle it with cable. It costs more for a 35mbps line by itself than the standard cable plus 35mbps bundle.
