Halo: Reach beta to attract 3 million-plus - Bungie

Studio aiming for May MP beta to be biggest ever; "grandiose marketing effort" will proceed sci-fi shooter's fall release; reconfirms no Natal support, next project an original IP.

With the Halo: Reach beta less than two weeks away, Bungie is dispatching some of its 180 staffers to help promote the ambitious online multiplayer test. Community director Brian Jarrard and multiplayer design lead Chris Carney sat down with the Seattle Times to discuss the beta's May 3 launch and the lead-up to the game's debut this fall.

Bungie is expecting over 3 million people to play the Halo Reach multiplayer beta.
Bungie is expecting over 3 million people to play the Halo Reach multiplayer beta.

"My expectation is it could be upwards of 3 million people," Jarrard told the newspaper. "I think that's a fairly conservative estimate. Certainly, there will never be a console beta of this magnitude."

While the beta will be available in every country where the Xbox 360 is sold, Jarrard thinks the majority of participants will be in North America. However, he said that a new matchmaking system will let people in other territories connect more easily than they could in Halo 3.

Halo: Reach's beta isn't the only thing that's going to be big. Jarrard and Carney said the game would have "a lot more grandiose marketing efforts" at "a much higher scale" than last year's Halo 3: ODST, a copy of which is required to access the multiplayer beta. Halo 3: ODST was the ninth best-selling game of 2009 in the US, having sold over 2.3 million units domestically as of March 31, according to the NPD Group.

The pair of Bungie staffers also reconfirmed that Halo: Reach will not support the Xbox 360's Project Natal motion-sensing system in any form. "Natal didn't exist until Reach was already two years into development," said Jarrard. "That alone creates issues. Secondly, it's not the type of control experience that we think lends itself to this type of game. We're comfortable with it; Microsoft is, too."

Finally, Jarrard also settled any lingering doubts about what Bungie's next project won't be. "Our next game is definitely not Halo; it's something totally new," he told the Times.

silent death, this game (reach) looks awesome.. dont hate. Halo 3 was very good and I love firefight mode in odst. I think halo reach is gonna be ridiculously good and I am not a fanboy of halo... I am a pc snob but I love halo.

@dallasanderson1 I couldn't agree more... but, but..... this one has "better" lighting effects and a different "cast' of people played by the same voices!!! BUT BUT!!! IT'S NEW! Hahaha. I'm so glad I don't have any Halo games, hate Halo games and never will buy a generic shooter like Halo. It was only popular because too many kiddies got their hands "dirty" with multiplayer FPS with Halo 2. Good thing I was playing FPS shooters on my PC since DOOM 1. Oh wait... most kiddies weren't even born then. HA HA I remember calling in to a BBS playing DOOM II with a 14.4bps dial up modem!!! Now that's classic! My 386SX-33Mhz could bearly run DOOM 2. Lol... and not we get spoon fed this garbage! *sigh*

Break the game everyone, we need to make sure all issues with multiplayer are resolved. You dont want another glitch frenzy like we saw in MW2 do you?

Surprised this isn't called Halo 4 because it looks exactly like Halo 3 with jetpacks.

I'll be looking forward to the single player of reach. I'm glad they're taking a more "dark" tone to the story. Which probably wont be dark at all but compared to previous halos I suppose you could say it is. Havn't been a fan of halo multiplayer since the first. The problem I have with most multiplayer games these days that are sequels is that the developers always seem to add things into the game that would be cool, if the game itself was built around those concepts. But most games, including halo everything they add doesn't fit within the halo universe to me. Although I'm sure 95% of people disagree so let the thumbs down begin!!

why do people say stuff like "bungie needs to redeem itself" without even mentioning the fact that their saying something that most people disagree with? i find it kind of annoying.

aliasghar96 (year you were born)? Seeing how Halo 3 was immensely successful critically and commercially, I'd say that Bungie does not need to "redeem" itself.

Halo: CE has one of the best campaign modes of any game to date. Halo 2 wasn't able to match its predecesor, but where it lacked in single player it more than made up for in MP (It easily had (has) the best MP known to consoles). Halo 3, in my opinion, was unable to match the strong story from H:CE and the MP of H2 (don't get me wrong H3 waas still an Amazing game and I still play it regularly). My hope for H:R is that it will out do what came before it. Bungie has said that Reach is going to be the "ultimate Halo experience" and if that is true than this game will definitely become the best game of all time!

@dallasanderson1 Can't you say that about any sequel? Most sequels are simply continuations of whatever story was present in the previous games, as well as some slight changes and improvements. What does Bungie need to add in order to meet your expectations?

Bungie's next project will be a FPS based off Charlie the Unicorn and his fantastic adventure to Candy Mountain.
