Halo: Reach beta to attract 3 million-plus - Bungie

Studio aiming for May MP beta to be biggest ever; "grandiose marketing effort" will proceed sci-fi shooter's fall release; reconfirms no Natal support, next project an original IP.

With the Halo: Reach beta less than two weeks away, Bungie is dispatching some of its 180 staffers to help promote the ambitious online multiplayer test. Community director Brian Jarrard and multiplayer design lead Chris Carney sat down with the Seattle Times to discuss the beta's May 3 launch and the lead-up to the game's debut this fall.

Bungie is expecting over 3 million people to play the Halo Reach multiplayer beta.
Bungie is expecting over 3 million people to play the Halo Reach multiplayer beta.

"My expectation is it could be upwards of 3 million people," Jarrard told the newspaper. "I think that's a fairly conservative estimate. Certainly, there will never be a console beta of this magnitude."

While the beta will be available in every country where the Xbox 360 is sold, Jarrard thinks the majority of participants will be in North America. However, he said that a new matchmaking system will let people in other territories connect more easily than they could in Halo 3.

Halo: Reach's beta isn't the only thing that's going to be big. Jarrard and Carney said the game would have "a lot more grandiose marketing efforts" at "a much higher scale" than last year's Halo 3: ODST, a copy of which is required to access the multiplayer beta. Halo 3: ODST was the ninth best-selling game of 2009 in the US, having sold over 2.3 million units domestically as of March 31, according to the NPD Group.

The pair of Bungie staffers also reconfirmed that Halo: Reach will not support the Xbox 360's Project Natal motion-sensing system in any form. "Natal didn't exist until Reach was already two years into development," said Jarrard. "That alone creates issues. Secondly, it's not the type of control experience that we think lends itself to this type of game. We're comfortable with it; Microsoft is, too."

Finally, Jarrard also settled any lingering doubts about what Bungie's next project won't be. "Our next game is definitely not Halo; it's something totally new," he told the Times.

See people who are complaing about M$/Bungie milking Halo and people who are defending Halo: Years ago, they told us that they were going to be 3 halo games only and see now, there ARE now 6 halo games.

Funny how they expect over 3 million even though ODST hasn't even sold 2.5 million yet, and you have to own ODST to play the beta. That's gonna either be a lot of rentals, a lot of piracy, or a lot of people sharing games. On another note, these Sony fanboys are annoying. Halo is a good game. Maybe not as good as others, but the reviews don't lie. How can one say the game sucks when you have a profile picture of Kratos or Cloud? Obviously you have never played Halo or never played it enough to appreciate it, and only dislike it to make you feel more confident in your decision in buying a PS3. Either that, or you just hate it because it's popular like any fad. COD is a perfect example.

Joshua250, say WHAT????????? you know what is dumb about Halo? New weapons in every game. What kind of R&D schedule are they on that they can constantly come up with new weapons over a short period of time? In real life, the AK-47 was the DOMINANT weapon world wide since it's use in 1949 (it was made in 1947). Meanwhile, the M16 and it's variants have been immensely popular since it's use in Vietnam. Both weapons are WIDELY used today as the standard weapons of most military forces. So why do the Halo weapons constantly "evolve" at a rapid, non realistic pace? AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON THE VEHICLES (and new Covenant races)!!!!!

@Ellanier: I like Halo, actually. I just want the storyline to have more focus so I can experience the rich and diverse history that Bungie has crafted. I want the fight to be finished. I am frustrated at the short single player campaigns that have plagued the series since Halo 2. There are downloadable games that are longer than that which cost half the price. Some people really like the multiplayer aspect, it's just not my cup of tea.

@gbyd Uh, don't you mean CoD? CoD isn't a good series. Heck, CoD has NEVER been a good series - it hardly evolves. Sure, you can complain that the Halos aren't radically different - but compared to CoD's evolution, Halo's evolution is like comparing Wolf3D to Half-life. So whine more; it's quite funny.

I missed out in the Halo 3 BETA. I can't wait to participate in this one. It is going to be great. I really want to see some of the cool graphical improvements and abilities they have put in. I believe this is going to be the biggest selling game of 2010. Should keep me busy until Gears of War 3.

Natal would be a nice "bonus" feature, but I would prefer the regular controller for games like this. ;)

Dang, they've been working on Reach for about 3 years? I mean, if they were already two years into development with Reach before Natal was unveiled, than wow. Maybe this beta didn't come as early as I thought it really should have, I was expecting a year's worth of work on Reach, maybe two. PlayStation fanboys be jealous.

@AceJakk Finish the Fight was for Halo 3, yes. However, Halo Wars was a prequel, and so is Halo Reach. The fight is over for the main story arc, but Reach is portraying a losing humanity, that unlike the Master Chief arc, actually loses their battle (not the war, the battle) ODST took place between Halo 2 and 3, right after Master Chief left Earth in Halo 2. So, I don't know your beef against Halo, I understand you might not like it, as many people do, but no reason to get so riled up against it. I don't like MW2, but I am not always giving out my opinion in a negative manner, I just state that I don't like it and why.

guitar hero is a milked game, they have come out with so many games that my budget can't handle it anymore, i'm satisfied with a new halo game if it comes out now. especially since its a new IP, not some generic halo 3 rip off

I agree with @feliscele and @SR71halo - I don't see how Halo has been milked any more than any other major franchise. To those saying Halo has been milked like Ben Stiller milked the Faulker's cat, what games do you like? I bet its been milked as much. Even Socom is on its 9th game (I'm a fan). Franchises get "milked" when people love the games and buy tons of them.

@Dante200X My point is that people are quick to say Halo is "milked" and stuff, when there are other games with the similar circumstances out there right now, and no one complains about them.

I agree that FF has had a lot of spin-offs and such lately. However, it certainty didn't feel like they were milking anything when the 4th game came out either.

Pretty sure Final Fantasy has had more games than Halo in the last decade (X, X-2, 11, 12, 13, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, and more). Not to mention so has Mario and Zelda. MGS has had roughly the same amount of games as Halo in the past decade as well.

@flint 247 a while ago noone even really played cod.... i was 1 of the few... even when 2 came out for 360 it was played at launch than really nothing... so you couldnt milk a series that wasnt even there until cod 4 were most of the general public got attracted to cod.

And actually Flint247, there is ALREADY 5 halo games. Comparing that to FF, Zelda, mario or MGS is down-right dumb. Think please. That has taken them decades to get that amount of games. That fact that people are getting tired of halo since halo 2 or 3 goes to show they need something amazing to keep the series alive...unless they really do think the fanboys will keep it alive because they buy everything.

I still laugh when people call ODST an expansion. It's got enough grit and grime to be called a game. I enjoyed ODST much more then Halo 3 for its career and multi-player because Halo 3 just delivered a polished Halo 2 experience. Halo Reach shows promise for the series in my eyes and I don't think any milking is happening when you consider Guitar Hero (and the like) and Final Fantasy have been draining the cow for some time now.

Final Fantasy has used a similar formula since 7. Seriously though, as popular as Halo is, it's only made 4 major titles, one spin off made by a different company, and one "overpriced" expansion totaling 6 games in the past 10 years. That's not so bad. If you don't like the milking, don't drink the milk. It's as simple as that. There's nothing wrong with continuing a popular series.
