Halo movie indefinitely postponed

Following collapse of studio backing and a proposed third rewrite, work on big-screen adaptation of sci-fi shooter phenomenon is stopped.

At the end of September, the Halo movie seemed to be right on track. Its executive producer, Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson, had been a featured speaker at Microsoft's X06 event in Barcelona, Spain. There, he talked up the multimillion-dollar sci-fi epic, which was being directed by novice Neill Blomkamp from a script by Alex Garland (28 Days Later) and D.B. Weiss.

What a difference a month makes. Earlier this month, Universal and Fox--the two Hollywood studios cofinancing the project along with Microsoft--backed out of the project after failing to renegotiate the profit-sharing scheme for the film. It had been slated for a summer 2008 release.

Despite the setback, Microsoft put on a brave face. "Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and the rest of the creative team are dedicated to ensuring the Halo movie becomes a reality," the company said in a statement on October 20. "We are already in discussions with potential partners who recognize the value of the Halo brand and its appeal to consumers worldwide."

Apparently the aforementioned discussions didn't go so well. This week, WingNut Films, Jackson's production company, announced that the release of Halo has been pushed back indefinitely. "At this time Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, along with Microsoft, have mutually agreed to postpone making a feature film based on the Halo video game universe until we can fulfill the promise we made to millions of Halo fans...of bringing a first class film to the big screen," read a statement sent out to numerous media outlets by WingNut.

Jackson and Walsh confirmed that Blomkamp would remain on board, praising him as a "tremendously gifted filmmaker" and calling his work on the project "truly awe-inspiring." However, the WingNut statement gave no date for the Master Chief's big-screen debut. "While it will undoubtedly take a little longer for Halo to reach the big screen, we are confident that the final feature film will be well worth the wait," read the statement.

While Blomkamp is sticking with Halo, neither Garland nor Weiss are currently involved with the project. According to the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, the film's script was being rewritten for a third time by Josh Olson, who received a 2006 Academy Award nomination for penning A History of Violence.

Halo is an awesome game but its a shooter and the story was really just something out of a sci-fi channel movie. Special effects fueled action on its own just doesn't awe anymore since its become common (in effect not "special" anymore). MS would be better off spend their money on polishing the next game and adding a crapload of new features :)

For all you people that say that Halo has no story and no character development, read the novels. To my account, there are three of them that explain the beginning of the "Spartan" program, which involved kidnapping children who showed "great potential", all the way to the first confrontation with the Covenant on planet Reach. All of these novels include background information on characters, and the events that happened before the events of Halo 1. I doubt that they will be basing the movie off of just Halo 1 and Halo 2, but will leave those events out for a second installment. Do you guys remember what Peter Jackson did with a little epic titled "The Lord of The Rings". Given enough time, I believe that Jackson will pour what he did for "Lord of the Rings" into the Halo movie.

Is everyone missing the point here? Microsoft owns the Halo series right? Microsoft is a mulit-billion dollar company, just like a movie publisher. So why dont they finance it themselves? Not like they haven't done such a thing before *cough* web browsing *cough* and got away with it. The return on it movie is there, so just pay what you need and you can make as many heavily-endorsed products you want. If you don't like it, then good luck getting your computer to start up tomorrow morning.

silent hill sucks as a game and as a movie, and as a poster. peter jackson has passion and concept which is what halo needs. fox backs out cuz the team didnt have enough "experience" in movies. lame reason. even if it sucked how much would it make on the first day?

Extreamly bad taste man. That is just not a good analogy. What makes no sense to me, is there was nothing really done yet on production, no sets, costumes, location deposits or anything. There was nothing that sanctioned this postponement other than egos, let me put it that way.

Peter directed King Kong, that was a good movie and it did well, he can do the same with Halo.

They need to bust out the hanger and perform a movie abortion, stat. There is no reason, whatsoever, that Halo could become even a passable movie. There are no characters or plots worth a damn! Hasn't anyone seen Silent Hill? Keep it as a game and don't cheapen the brand! Eject! Eject!

I'm not much of a Halo fan but I still think the story behind it is an interesting one. If they can make movies about religious fanaticism, then a movie involving fanatic aliens works fine for me. The thing that got this movie delayed in the first place was the disagreement on profit-sharing. Why is it always about who gets the most money when something is a success? It's just sad and pathetic. But it's just as well. Video-game movies have a troubled history anyway, all though Peter Jackson would have at least made the film presentable to the mainstream.

Every time the script gets a rewrite the more of a failure the movie becomes. Anyone ever see Alien 3? Or 4? they were rewritten over and over. Unfortunately I have never seen a good Videogame (or comics) movie. I would avoid this one until a lot of people(non fans) had said it was good anyway.

O well I was looking forward to seeing that but hay that is ok I'll wait and see how Halo 3 turns out and the only way I'll find that out is by reading the reviews and all cause I don't have a Xbox 360 yet to expensive at the moment and the games are at rediculous prices as well.

Grim, you didn't even play a Halo game if you think that. The Halo series had some great story lines that got me thrilled from end to end. Halo1's story was amazingly well writen. Halo2 was also well written and the epicness of team work and care made a little message to us all: "it doesn't matter what we look like, it matters about our character". Some may have not noticed that in the game, but since....Errr, shouldn't spoil it. And MC (not 'spartan') is a bad ass of a character. He may not show any emotion, but that's what makes him so awesome. He just feels like the best hero ever.

Just to clarify for those saying that this cancellation is Fox and Universal's fault. They gave the OK for this movie to Peter Jackson and MS for a budget of about $135 million. Then all of a sudden the budget being requested balloons up to $200 million. Fox and Universal go to Peter and MS and say if you want us to fork out another $60 million then you had better be willing to take a smaller cut of the potential profits since we are being asked to take on even more financial risk. MS and Jackson said 'take a hike' and Fox and Universal called their bluff and did end up backing out. Peter Jackson isn't likely working on this film at all now without any funding, it is just floating around in limbo (like Duke Nukem Forever) so this extra time before any possible release won't likely make the final film any better than if it were coming out in 2007 as planned. Think of it this way. If you went to a car dealership and haggled with a salesman and agreed upon a price of $13500 for a car, went to the bank and got the money out, went back to the salesman and then suddenly the price went up to $20000. No explanation, no increase in features or quality. Wouldn't you say no way. Then after you walked away from the newly inflated deal the salesman (MS and Peter Jackson) goes ahead and badmouths you to the general public about what a contract breaker and liar you are. Yeah, you can see why MS and Peter Jackson are having a tough time finding new partners to "join" them in this Halo fiasco after Fox and Universal walked away. And having some rookie director with a resume of commercials and nothing else sure doesn't inspire confidence in Hollywood executives. If this film releases before Halo 4 hits the Xbox 360 then I will be amazed.

You can't really blame these people anyways... Movies based off of games havn't really been that great of a success. Look at Doom and how people hated that movie. These companies want to take their own view of the game and the gamers want it to stick true and hardcore to the game. So I can see why they are backing down but sitll, this sucks so much. I was actually looking forward to this movie and thinking they might do a good job. I hope they don't screw it up.
