Halo 5 Getting 15+ Free Maps, Co-Op Doesn't Require Xbox Live Gold

"Epic" new multiplayer mode also in the works that will be unveiled at E3.

Update: Microsoft now says you will need Xbox Live Gold in order to play Halo 5's campaign online.

Original Story: 343 Industries plans to avoid splitting up Halo 5: Guardians's multiplayer player base by giving away more than a dozen DLC maps for free. Additionally, you won't need to pay for Xbox Live Gold in order to play the campaign cooperatively online.

These details come courtesy of Game Informer's new cover story on Halo 5, which is due out on October 27. The game will reportedly include more than 20 multiplayer maps right out of the gate, with more than 15 maps being released as DLC by June 2016. Microsoft will give each of these away for free to avoid dividing players into groups of those who do and do not own them--something that has increasingly become a problem for shooters over the years.

"When you have paid map packs and content, you divide the player base into two groups: the haves and have-nots," studio head Josh Holmes explained. "The people that have the map pack can play together but the people who don't cannot. That to us is a real problem. So we're delivering all the maps to all players free so everybody will be able to play together. That, we feel, is really important to having a great multiplayer ecosystem."

While that's certainly encouraging news, players who enjoy playing Halo cooperatively on one system are in for a disappointment, as Guardians drops support for split-screen co-op. On the bright side, you'll be able to join up with other players online for campaign co-op without the need for an Xbox Live Gold subscription, which is ordinarily required for any online multiplayer on Xbox One. If playing online isn't an option, you'll still have AI-controlled companions throughout the campaign.

Design director Kevin Franklin also teased that E3 will bring with it news about a "new epic multiplayer experience" that 343 is excited about. "I can't say too much about it, but I can tell you it does incorporate all aspects of the Halo sandbox for the very first time ever," he said. "This was always a dream of ours and all of our fans to build something like this. It's been three years of long development and an incredible amount of play testing. We can't wait to show it off."

Beyond that, no hints were given as to what this new mode consists of. You can read more about Halo 5 in the latest issue of Game Informer.

Fortunately, we don't have long to wait to find out more about the game and this mysterious new game mode, as Microsoft's E3 press conference is just days away. It's scheduled to take place at 9:30 AM PT on Monday, June 15. Stay tuned to GameSpot for all the latest out of the conference and the rest of E3.

That's awesome about the maps! I hope other developers do the same thing in the future. Don't care for split-screen anyway.

Pretty stark contrast when you compare 343's DLC plan against Bungies.

@suicidesn0wman:

Maybe all the greedy people went to Bungie, and all the not greedy people stayed at 343i.

I for one don't even mind paying premium prices for Bungie's work. Destiny is game of the decade.

Nice. I don't know too many people who play Halo and don't have Xbox Live but, I'm sure there are a few. And keeping the maps free for everyone is a smart move. One of the things I hate when I play FPS's is map packs dividing the player base.

I think it's good that Halo 5 will have a decent number of maps, even if it's kind of sad that 15 maps is considered exceptional for such a multiplayer-centric game. Halo Reach had what, 9 maps at launch? The robustness of forge maps helped to stretch that somewhat, but it's still not much for a game that's best known for its online gameplay.

As a longtime Halo fan who skipped the Xbox One, I hope Halo 5 is good, as long as it's not so good that I feel like I have to spend $350 on an XBox One! For now, I'm cautiously optimistic. Halo 4 was technically polished, but it just lacked a certain je se ne qua that Bungie's games had. Maybe this time around they'll get the spirit right...

Also, I think that for first party games, it's smart to be gamer-friendly, especially so early in the console's life cycle. Allowing co-op without Gold and giving away free DLC will pay dividends in the long-term for Microsoft. Right now they want to bring as many players into the fold and build brand loyalty. Or really, rebuild brand loyalty, which they managed to botch pretty badly with the Xbox One's launch (hence why a lot of people, like myself, switched to PS4 this generation.)

@greenwinnebago: Considering the crazy amount of time I spent playing Halo 2 even before it got any DLC maps, I disagree. But keep in mind that it's apparently 15 (or more) DLC maps on top of 20 maps included with the game in the first place. That's a ton.

Take notes game devs, that's thinking about the players.also split screen may have been fun in the past (yelling at friends for screen peeking) but its too outdated to include in modern games.

@jonnybrownieboy: I have to disagree completely. The most fun I've had playing Halo, up to and including Halo 4, has been split-screen co-op. I played all the Halo games in split-screen when they first came out, and a couple years ago, I played through nearly the entire Halo series together with my GF... I was toying with the idea of picking up an Xbox One so I could do the same with Halo 5, but apparently that's not an option.

What if most of your gaming friends are either PC gamers or casual gamers who don't own a current-gen system? Split-screen was great because you could just play games together with a friend, even if they didn't own the system or have the desire to make an investment in new gaming hardware. Now the other person would need to spend $350 on an Xbox 1, plus $60 for a new copy of the game... Allowing online co-op without Xbox Live is better than nothing, but it still requires two systems and two copies of the game. At least Halo 4 had Spartan Ops, which had tons of filler but still managed to be a blast in Co-op.

@jonnybrownieboy: too outdated? what kind of drugs are you on that would make you say something so ...

anyways, splitscreen is never outdated. my brother isn't going to play this game because of the lack of it now. he's not buying a xone just for this. i'd take split screen coop over the no live requirement any day.

@kentray1985: i'm 29. What of it? We don't live in the same house but we're still relatively close. He's not buying a xone for this game, so he was hoping to play cooperatively with me when it's out. now he can't.

@jonnybrownieboy: Depends on what's you're doing. Eliminating split screen from the campaign really sucks as you guys are (obviously) on the same team, and doing so from competitive eliminates having LAN matches like 4v4 where screen peeking isn't an issue. Now, if I remember correctly it's not eliminated for the latter, but it is reduced to 2 players per console, which still stinks.
