Guitar Hero "leaping forward" in Q4, On Tour DS bundle confirmed

Activision execs tell analysts it's two weeks away from revealing a "significant innovation" for its billion-dollar rhythm franchise; Nintendo bundling handheld with first portable edition.

Earlier today, Activision reported nearly $3 billion in earnings for its 2008 fiscal year. The company called out Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock as being the number one game in terms of revenue in the US and Europe during the 12 months before March 31, 2008. It also promised more profits from the franchise, thanks in part to the forthcoming June 29 release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3.

During a conference call with analysts afterward, Activision publishing president Mike Griffith also talked up Guitar Hero: On Tour, the first iteration of the game for the DS. "[It's] a breakthrough peripheral-based game for the Nintendo DS that brings the Guitar Hero experience to the 41 million DS users in North America and Europe so they can play Guitar Hero anywhere, anytime," said Griffith.

Then, he revealed the game--previously announced only as a $49.99 stand-alone edition (pictured), will also be available bundled with the DS hardware itself. All three versions of the game will launch on June 22. "Nintendo has been impressed with [On Tour's] innovation," he said.

Speaking of innovation, Griffith also used the conference call to drop a massive tease about what's in store for the Guitar Hero franchise. "For the holiday, we'll provide a significant leap forward in innovation for Guitar Hero worldwide on all platforms including the PS3, PS2, Xbox 360, Wii, and again on the DS," he said cryptically. "We'll provide more information detailing this specific innovation in a couple weeks."

Later, an analyst asked Griffith directly if Activision was considering adding other instruments to the Guitar Hero franchise soon, or if the publisher was "still in wait-and-see evaluation mode." The executive demurred, saying, "We've put a lot of additional development resources, a lot of additional music licenses resources, a lot of additional hardware supplier resources against the title to fuel growth over next year. We're excited by the increased musical content and innovation we're bringing. We do expect a leap forward in innovation with our holiday launch, and we're about two weeks away from providing very specific details on that."

Still, Activision's vagueness is odd, given the fact its CEO, Bobby Kotick, recently stated publicly that the publisher was planning to bring both instruments and vocals to the Guitar Hero franchise.

Drums with a double bass pedal would at least be more innovative. How about some of the "classic" stages that bands have used such as the "76 Kiss stage with light up stairs, or Iron Maiden's Powerslave or 7th Son stage, Dio's "castle" of Sacred Heart tour, Ozzy's "mansion" stage of Blizzard tour, etc.

Significant innovation? Well if it's a drum kit and vocals, it's just copying, not innovating. Maybe it's finally time for Accordion Hero and Herdy Gerdy hero!

How about they add a Bass to the mix? I would love that seeing as I play Bass. Bass is still a type of Guitar.

could be interesting but I can't imagine what would be added at this point to call it a "significant leap forward".

Additional development resources = Free neon guitar pick with every copy of GH4!! Woooo! Maybe a foot pedal with an Aerosmith logo on it? But seriously, just go Rock Band. It's got style, awesome track lists, great presentation, good DLC, etc. When you play it, you can tell it was made by people who wanted others to have fun together.

I hope it's not Drums and such. I have Rock Band for that. Guitar Hero + drums and vocals would be a blatant take from Rock Band, and it'd kinda go against the name "Guitar" Hero. Maybe they're talking about adding effects to it? Like pedals and things. That'd be a pretty cool innovation, and it'd seem in line with what the game's going for anyway. It'd be pretty cool going through all the different effects to add a unique sound to each song.

Logged in to say this in response to teh guy talking about copying Konami. Harmonix did Karaoke Revolution. Not Konami. Konami published it only. Just though, y'know, since this is a Harmonix vs. Neversoft fight...I'd throw that in. Upcoming revolution: New difficulty to accomodate ActiSofts BIG overcharting tendencies. I'm calling it now.;

They lost my GH sales when they refused to let the patch that allowed the PS3 GH controller work with RB. I won't buy any new GH since I have RB which I consider to be a superior game anyway.

If GH adds Drums and Vocals, their instruments better work both ways with Rock Band or else they'll be shooting themselves in the foot. I can't imagine anyone buying full instrument sets for both games... most people here seem to only stick to one or the other to begin with. I'll laugh when all the GH fanboys who hate on RB start praising GH finally getting Drums and Vocals, if that is indeed the case.

I know people will claim it was Activisions idea first, they trademarked Drum Hero ages ago etc. etc., but they've left it too late, everyone who likes this sort of game will probably already have Rock Band.

Watch the "significant leap foward in innovation for Guitar Hero" be something Konami has already done. Guitars? Konami (Guitar Freaks). Drums? Konami again (Drummania). Singing? Who else, Konami (Karaoke Revolution). DJ and keyboards? Take a wild guess....(Beatmania, Keyboardmania). Guitars and drums together? Guitar Freaks and Drummania had that one done long before Rock Band was thought of. If anyone is expected to bring something new to the table, it would have to be Red Octane with their experience for making all the 3rd party periphrials for the home versions of the above mentioned games. So come on Activision, I challenge you to bring out something i've never seen before! Unless your innovation is only adding something to GH. Bagpipe Hero coming soon?

Please, just no more proprietary peripherals. They need to come to an agreement so both franchises can share instruments. I'm not buying drums again. I'm not buying another guitar again. And while they're at it: no more achievements like "beat the game in offline co-op on Expert" because everybody I know can't even hang in on Medium. There are not so bad if a game has online, but when Rock Band dropped the ball like it did, that sucks bigtime.

chances are, if the CEO is open about something, then the dude being interviewed is cryptic about the same thing, the dude asking the question just uncovered his "secret" and the interviewer has to go into deflect mode so he can "surprise" people when they tell us they're making a rock band clone. ....which wouldn't be bad, provided they ported it to PC again. otherwise, both activision and harmonix will have screwed me over for the *counts number of GH games/clones besides 3* 4th, possibly 5th time.

Keep an open mind. It does look like they're going to go all-out with a Rock Band copy, but you can't be too sure about what exactly is going to happen. I don't think they'd make such a big deal over a great "innovation" if it had already been done before. About six months earlier, at that. But who knows?

How could they add something like drums to Guitar Hero and still call it Guitar Hero. The whole point of the name of the game is to ehmpasize the fact that you play the guitar.

you know what ? i think it COULD be great if they kept GUITAR ONLY with singing also...so they can still focus on guitar play and have us sign at the same time...if they bring drum it would destroy the GUITAR HERO meaning...just my oppinnion

Just think how much more money Activision would of made if they wouldn't of let Harmonix go. They could of had both GH and Rock Band. It would be the ultimate stranglehold on the music genre.

At least one innovation being refered to is using a port on the DS (that is designed for output) for input with the fret addon.

Guitar Hero: On Tour is looking pretty good. My DS just broke and so I may pick this bundle up. Too bad they don't a have a The World Ends with You Bundle. And, concerning adding instruments to Guitar Hero, please don't do it. If I want to play guitar, drums, and vocals, I'll play Rock Band. But sometimes you just want to play Guitar Hero, you know?

WOW! Bringing BOTH instruments and vocals?! Why didn't anyone else think of that?...wait. Someone already did. Way to use your "innovation," guys. Oh! and: @ -- SirFrosty, umm, Rock Band ripped off Guitar Hero, eh? That's funny, guitar hero was created by harmonix...you know, the same guys who created rock band. Activision is ripping off Rock Band if anything.
