Guild Wars 2 Base Game Now Free, Dev Promises No Aggressive Microtransactions

Q&A: PC MMO also adds raids and more; we talk with ArenaNet about the business model change.

Big changes are coming to the PC MMO Guild Wars 2.

Today at PAX Prime, developer ArenaNet announced that the Guild Wars II base game is available to play for free beginning now, August 29. The business model transition comes three years after the game was originally released in August 2012. In that time, the game has seen more than 40 free content updates and sold in excess of 5 million units.

No Caption Provided

Although the Guild Wars 2 base game is free, the upcoming expansion, Heart of Thorns--due October 23--will be paid. The main decision behind making Guild Wars 2 free is to encourage people to jump into the game with the hope that they will eventually upgrade to Heart of Thorns.

"If people are expecting we're going to go in and heavily monetize free players now, that's not what this is about," ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien told GameSpot. "This is about making the base game available for everyone to try because we believe that when people love Guild Wars 2 they're going to buy Heart of Thorns. We're not changing the way people purchase cosmetic items or adding a bunch of new items in the store. Guild Wars 2 will remain the same game it always has been."

ArenaNet also today announced that raids are finally coming to Guild Wars 2. These will be 10-player instanced challenges where players must work together to defeat powerful, endgame bosses. The game's first raid will be released across three parts--wings, as they're called--"shortly" after Heart of Thorns arrives in October.

"Once we activate the first raid in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, players will quickly discover that our raids are not waiting to have fun nor about endless gear grind--there are no attunements to complete before you raid, and they won't become irrelevant or even drastically easier because of a new tier of gear or a level cap raise," Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson said.

"If people are expecting we're going to go in and heavily monetize free players now, that's not what this is about" - O'Brien

"There will be no wasteland of forgettable raids left behind as we continue to expand the system. Once players complete a raid and beat the final boss, it will be a meaningful event that will linger for them, their guild, their friends, and any player who learns that they've beat it."

ArenaNet also claims that its raids will vary from those available now in other MMOs.

"[Our] take on raids will be distinctly Guild Wars 2, factoring in the action-based combat system in the game to replace UI-gazing with active strategies such as weapon and ability changes on the fly in combat, skill combos, dodge rolling, positioning for attacks, and the ability to heal for every class," Johanson said. "They don't rely on the conventional tank, healer, and damage dealer 'trinity' to take on challenges. Instead, all players in a group will need to step up and support, control, and do damage in encounters in order for the group to succeed."

To go deeper into Guild Wars 2's business model change, we spoke with ArenaNet president Mike O'Brien. He talks about why ArenaNet made the change, what impact it may have, bonuses for existing players, and more. Take a look at the full interview below.

When did you decide you wanted to make the base game free, and what were the driving factors for that decision?

Mike O'Brien: We are getting ready to launch our first expansion Heart of Thorns later this year, and so we're at a time when we have a lot of new players coming into the game. And it's a great time for new players to come into the game. This is a time when we're about to launch an expansion that has a lot of new endgame content. It has the new Mastery system that brings character progression beyond level 80. It has awesome group content such as reworked Fractals, which are our five-man dungeons. And it has raids. With all of this new endgame content coming we thought this is the right time to get new players into the game--this is the ideal time for them to create their characters and get them ready for the launch of Heart of Thorns. That's what made this the perfect time for this transition.

How do you anticipate fans will react to this change, both in-game and out?

I think for fans there are obvious great things about expanding the community and getting more and more people in Guild Wars 2. But fans will be and should be--they have a right to be--protective of the community that they've built. Guild Wars 2 is famous for having the friendliest community in online gaming, and we owe it to fans to protect that. We've put a lot of effort into making sure to get the details right here. The details involve ensuring that we can protect our existing community while still making it easy for fans to introduce their friends to the game.

Will existing players who bought the base game be getting any bonuses?

Earlier this year, right after we introduced our pre-purchase program for Heart of Thorns, we gave a free character slot to all existing players. This week we also have a special anniversary gift for all of our existing players [following up on this].

Is anything in the base game changing, either in terms of what you can access or new things for you to buy with real-world money?

There are some tweaks to what free accounts can access. First, free accounts start with less storage--fewer character slots and bag slots--than paid accounts, but they still get the full complement of storage as soon as they buy the game. Second, free accounts have some subtle restrictions to chat and economy interactions, specifically so they can't be used to abuse the game with botting and spamming. So, for example, free accounts can whisper just like paid accounts can, but they can only start one new whisper conversation every 30 seconds. Third, free accounts have to play the game normally before getting to some areas where they could otherwise be used to disrupt the game for other players. In particular, they should play to level 60 before joining WvW. We've spent a lot of time tweaking these restrictions to get the right balance where free accounts are getting the authentic Guild Wars 2 experience but can't be used to abuse the game or other players.

Guild Wars 2 was not originally designed as a free experience; what kinds of challenges did you face transitioning the game, and what are the big opportunities now that it's going free?

If you notice, we're not using the words free-to-play with Guild Wars 2. We believe in buy-to-play, and we know that when people describe something as free-to-play that comes with expectations. If people are expecting that's what we're doing with the game, if people are expecting we're going to go in and heavily monetize free players now, that's not what this is about. This is about making the base game available for everyone to try because we believe that when people love Guild Wars 2 they're going to buy Heart of Thorns. We're not changing the way people purchase cosmetic items or adding a bunch of new items in the store. Guild Wars 2 will remain the same game it always has been.

You're not taking the traditional free-to-play approach that some other MMOs have; why?

We've been championing buy-to-play for a decade ever since the original Guild Wars. We think it's a great business model for MMOs. We think it's good for players; we think it's good for developers. With Guild Wars 2 we've always tried to be mindful of our in-game shop, the gem store, and what we sell in the game. We've always tried to make sure that Guild Wars 2 is a game where you come into it and you've got the whole game. There's nothing tricky going on. We are continuing that as we make this transition. We think this is fantastic value and that players are truly getting the authentic Guild Wars 2 experience for free. Again, we can do this because we believe when players come into the game they'll love it and consider upgrading to our expansion, Heart of Thorns.

On a wider, industry level, do you think MMOs have to be free to be successful? There is one example out there of an MMO that continues to be subscription-based with millions of subscribers...

I don't think MMOs have to be any one thing to be successful. We have a great example of an MMO that's buy-to-play and has been very successful. We've sold 5 million copies of Guild Wars 2 as a buy-to-play game and it continues to grow. We have a lot of new players coming in. Looking back, we've shipped 40 major content updates since launch. Now we're getting ready to launch our first expansion, and we'll be continuing content updates beyond that. We're making this transition to free because it's the right thing for our game, because it allows us to keep our buy-to-play business model and keep it very simple and clear as we launch an expansion. There's only one thing to buy. This isn't something we have to do; it's something we’re choosing to do.

Do you ever think about the possibility of [World of Warcraft] becoming free some day and how that could impact the level of differentiation between your game and theirs?

We're inspired by many different things in our industry, but we're not worried about what any one game might be doing. Our sole goal and responsibility is to make Guild Wars 2 the very best game that we can for our players.

Another advantage of the paid version of Guild Wars 2 is the Birthday Gift you get every year. No not YOUR birthday. The birthday of EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER you own on your account! For the 4th birthday I was able to get FREE the Shadow Abyss Dye that was very expensive! Thanks Anet! :) I have not liked everything they have done (such as I did NOT get the free character slot since I bought the game during LAUNCH of the base game back when it cost a lot) as well as the way they rolled out the Free version after the charged only $10 for players and then the free was so severely limited and you could not buy the base game anymore even if you wanted to through Anet. Only the one with the expansion which was very expensive at that time. But overall I DO love the game. My friends all went back to World of Warcraft oddly enough (we came from WoW to GW2 years back .. so this was surprising) but I personally still really enjoy GW2 even though I had gotten bored of some parts by now.

I am one of those long time players who played for 4 years and did NOT get a free character slot. It was deceiving how Anet said in this article "Earlier this year, right after we introduced our pre-purchase program for Heart of Thorns, we gave a free character slot to all existing players." when that was ONLY true for players who bought the base game when it went on sale for $10 before they made it free to play because players were complaining how unfair that was.

@Michael1571: You can see what the comparison is of the account types here: https://help.guildwars2.com/hc/en-us/articles/230165307-Account-types-Free-Core-HoT

As for is it worth it, Yes. If you already like it as free to play you will for SURE like it as a paid player because it will unlock EVERYTHING that you are restricted in currently. The Trading Post (you are right) IS restricted (A LOT) and so is map chat and character and using Guild Bank as well as cannot WvW until 60 and cannot play Raids or HOT maps or any of the new Living Story without HOT expansion. So yes, when a sale comes around (there have already been TWO 50% off sales) buy it! Hope this helps (I did not read the other replies to your question).

@Michael1571: I've been playing this for 2 years now. I bought the full game, not at the full price, but at a cheaper price because they were doing sales about every few months so i got the game at half the price. I can tell you that even though i got it at that price, if they never had done that, I still would have paid the full price for it eventually. This game is def worth my time. The major thing that I had a problem with MMO's, especially WOW, is that there was a price tag on content. Either it be P2W or monthly subscription. In my opinion this game is equal to or better than them all. This game is not P2W even though it's free now. And the fact that there is no monthly subscription makes this better for me. I played WOW, bought all the expansions except Panderia because I quit and ended my script after playing GW2. This game is better made, better story line, better gameplay and visualy better looking. The fact that I don't have a script makes this a great casual player MMO and I don't feel that I have to play the game to get the most out of it, unlike WOW where i feel that if I don't play I feel as if I'm wasting my money. Makes you feel trapped. This game has taken time to come around with some of it's content but for me that makes it all the better because it's not stalling out after 3 years. You have to understand that the world that is in the game now, there are still 2 other continents still left to be added and unveilded and the current continet is still not fully available. This makes me very happy. It builds a good lore which is already good and they have more to build on. WOW has been staling out for the past 1-2 years because their content is not deep enough to support the story. GW2 in mho a better quality game than the rest.

@solinvictus: Guild Wars 2 is hardly pay to win. Gems are mainly used to buy cosmetic items, while the closest things to "pay to win" are salvage machines and gathering tools, of which you can buy "infinite" versions with gems, as opposed to the regular ones that have anywhere from 25-250 charges, depending on what you buy or craft. And those are generally cheap--it's only a little annoying to have to buy them again, but not a big deal.

There might be a slight pay to win aspect since the introduction of gem to gold conversion, but honestly, it is slight. You can't buy the best armor with gold--it's account bound, so it can't be sold on the auction house. You can't even craft it all at once if you go and buy a ton of mats. The crafting system is built to prevent that--there's a waiting time on certain ascended mats so that you can't craft it all at once.

So paying a bunch of money for gems can certainly be helpful, but it's really not going to make anyone more powerful than what a player can get without buying a single gem. Paying might get you there a little faster, but that's it. There are no overpowered pay-to-win characters in this game, and it's not going to make you one of the best players in a couple days.

Ok, this serves very little purpose other than to be more of advertisement tool for the upcoming *cough* expansion.

The game is 3 years old. It was easy to find it cheap now (20$). Everyone that wanted to play the game has done so already. This helps very few people. "But how can you complain about free stuff? Some people are never happy!". It's not about complaining, it's about this being irrelevant.

But the game still has plenty of supporters and those want new content. To address this here comes the *cough* new expansion. New content is always good but there isn't that much new content in the expansion. But hey, new content is new content. How much is there in terms of % compared to the original game? Idk, 20%? Ok, then can we get it to cost 20% of the original price? That's the way vets are looking at it.

In conclusion:

Base game now free - who cares.

New expansion costs 60$ - not enough content to justify that asking price.

PS: I'd also like to add that when they launched GW2 they got my vote of confidence. This was a company that was offering a game with TONS of content, filled with fresh new ideas about combat and content delivery (quests, puzzles), great pvp mechanics imo and asking for NO SUBSCRIPTION. Praise all the way. Nowadays you can't give praise to that many publishers/developers and only red project comes to mind. With this recent move they threw all the goodwill away. This is what EA does all the time and it is why they are so hated.

@moriwenne: I've always wanted to give GW2 a try, but have a large backlog of RPG's already and spend a lot of time on FFXIV. Now that it's free to download I'll go ahead and give it a go.

Wish Guild Wars 2 had henchman so I could solo the story line. Not into multiplayer, but I love huge fantasy worlds. Skyrim needs more competition.

@skootbootz: Yea I pretty much played this game as a SP MMO and enjoyed it more than any other MMO. The added importance placed on exploring made it feel more interesting, and the voiced dialogue certainly didn't hurt, but what really drew me in was the wonderful world and colours, ohh the colours.

Was tempted to try and get back into it with the expansion but I just don't know where to begin now, and these kind of games are such time sinks... too many other games on my plate and comming up soon.

@nl_skipper: Yeah GW2 art style is what kept me playing for as long as I did. It really is a pretty game. I also loved that arcade things that was in the Bunny races starting zone. Those little things the GW2 does makes the game a stand out IMO

@Defender1978: There's not many Personal Quests that you can't solo (actually you can solo all of them, you just die and respawn from checkpoint...as long as you kill at least one more mob before you die you're making progress) but it shouldn't be too difficult to find someone to help you and since it's your story and they can't make any decisions on how it progresses there's no way they can mess it up for you.

If you ever need help with a PQ just PM me and I'll run you through it =)

So, for my $60 purchase, I get a single extra character slot?

When anyone can now just make multiple free accounts to get several characters per account?

Boy, I sure learned my lesson about putting trust into this game. I'm surely going to shell out MORE money for the expansion after being ripped off like this.

Oh wait, no I'm not.

@roachcarnival: If you enjoyed the game since you bought it then you probably got your moneys worth. The fact that others can now play it for free should not take away from your enjoyment and doesn't automatically entitle you to anything extra. I'd be happy you're getting anything extra at all, plus you can go ahead and create another free account for yourself if you want.

@roachcarnival: Um... you're seriously upset that the game got much cheaper THREE entire years after release...? Lol grow up. On the flip side gems are now about 100x the cost they were when the game was new, so there's that for the veteran players, they should have a hoard by now.

It would be nice if they gave a discount to vets for the expansion pack, but I don't really feel much need to complain. Most games this far after they are launched at $10, it's just a fact of life, making it free will just bring some new blood into the game which could be a good thing, sometimes it is hard to find enough people for certain group events.

And this comes right after they downed the price for 10 bucks for a couple of days trying to squeeze out as much money they could possibly get out of us for the base game, and all leading up to this day when it's finally free lol. Touché Arenanet!

They don't have to create more microtransactions. They will just nerf the drop rates of necessary items, like Ectos and Bloods. People will buy gems to sell on the marketplace to get enough gold to actually get the gear they need. They have done this many, many times before.

way to jab your thumb into the eye of every vet Obrien. cpl mos ago it was free base w HoT purchase, now its free base for anyone, so the base really is absolutely free. $60 wasted. id gladly take limited bag slots n limited chat until lvl 80 to only spend $50 for xpac, to save that extra $60, making it $110 total they want from vets.

those raids they said you could just step into? you cant. you have to have the glider mastery, which means you have to work for it.

and the raids themselves? they are only 10 man.

@numinex10: for sure I love that GW2 doesn't rip off WoW like all mmos do and still manages to be really fun. However, it couldn't hurt to copy a few things from it just to add to that "pull" that WoW does so well..

So did I just waste my money when I bought this game at launch? Ahh well, I enjoyed it for what it was worth.

Guild Wars 2 was great during the time I played it. I just don't have time for an MMO with so many other games.
