Guardians Of The Galaxy Director Wanted To Make R-Rated Hitman Movie

The producers didn't want an R-rated Hitman movie at the time, James Gunn says.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has revealed that he was at one point interested in making a Hitman movie. Writing on Twitter today, Gunn said he wanted it to be rated R, but the producers wanted a lesser rating, presumably so it could reach a wider audience.

"I tried to make a Hitman movie a few years ago," he said. "But the producers at the time didn't want to make it R-rated, so they passed."

Gunn did not share any more details about the Hitman project he had ideas for.

Both Hitman films, 2007's Hitman and 2015's Hitman: Agent 47, were rated R. Neither was very well-received, with Agent 47 going down as one of the worst-reviewed video game movies in history. Neither passed $100 million at the global box office, either.

Timothy Olyphant played Agent 47 in 2007's Hitman, a job he says he only took so he could pay for a house. Homeland star Rupert Friend played the part in the newer film; he signed on after the original actor, Paul Walker, died in a car crash.

Gunn's next movie is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which comes out this May.

It should be a bit like an Oceans film. Make most of it from someone else's point of view and have them know about a Hitman but not any details as they try and stop him but fail and at the end you can see all the hiding in plain sight stuff where you see Agent 47 explaining to his handler how he did it.

More like Mature Audience.

Maybe Tarantino or Del Toro-esque --if you like their work. If you don't, that's your right.

@leblnk: I can't see a Hitman film being made by Tarantino. I really like Tarantino and his films but to me the genre doesn't match with Hitman.

New rule: no making video game movies until you've beaten the game and posted a screen shot of the trophies and achievements.

Hire a good writer and a good director. There's no reason why a movie based on a video game can't be good.

Well the same guy, Skip Woods, wrote both the Hitman movies. Maybe they should cut his fingers off so he can't write anymore before you go and water down a mature game with a PG-13 movie.

Needs to not be a straight up action movie.

@angel9ramos7: I dunno about an action film I think Agent 47 is more low key then a guy fight. I feel Agent 47's actions at least the first film needs to be felt not seen for the most part.
