After an earlier report that the first look at Grand Theft Auto 6 will debut next month, developer Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the news. Sam Houser posted a new message on the Rockstar website, verifying that the trailer for the "next Grand Theft Auto" will drop in early December, a date that coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Grand Theft Auto series.

"Next month marks the 25th anniversary of Rockstar Games," Houser wrote. "We are very excited to let you know that in early December, we will release the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto. We look forward to many more years of sharing these experiences with all of you."

Curiously, this date lines up with the 2023 edition of the Game Awards event that will be held on December 7. While host and organizer Geoff Keighley hasn't commented on if GTA 6 will be present at the awards show, it wouldn't be unusual as the Game Awards has regularly debuted trailer for big games and was even the event in which the first look at the Xbox Series X console was first shown off.

The last entry in the GTA series, Grand Theft Auto V, arrived back in 2013 on PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. The game has had a constant presence on the charts since then, thanks in part to upgraded versions landing on new console generations and GTA Online being a huge hit as a live-service addition to the game. In the last decade, Rockstar Games has also released Red Dead Redemption 2, a remaster of Red Dead Redemption, and Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition.

As for when GTA 6 could arrive, the CEO of Rockstar's parent company Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, hinted at a late 2024 or early 2025 release date. In an earnings call in August 2023, Zelnick mentioned that that fiscal year 2025--April 2024 to March 2025--would represent a "significant inflection point" for the company. Take-Two will also release its earnings report today, so this announcement is well-timed to occur alongside that.
