GTA 5 PC Ships on 7 Discs - Report

By comparison, 2008's GTA IV shipped on just two DVDs.

The upcoming physical PC version of Rockstar's open-world game Grand Theft Auto V will ship across seven DVDs. That's according to the image above, which appeared earlier today on Reddit.

No Caption Provided

The origins of the image are not immediately clear, though the ratings logo suggests it stems from an international market, not the United States.

By comparison, 2008's GTA IV shipped across just two discs. Of course--at 65 GB--GTA V is a substantially larger game than GTA IV, which weighs in at 16 GB.

Another picture of the PC edition of GTA V appeared on Twitter today. Presumably taken inside of a warehouse or retailer, the image shows off stacks and stacks of the game.

GTA V launches for PC in under a week, hitting retailers worldwide on April 14. The digital version of the game is available now to pre-load from the Rockstar Warehouse and Steam.

For lots more on the PC edition of GTA V, check out GameSpot's new interview with Rockstar North and the video below where we discuss the game's new editor and director mode.

The funny thing is I'm buying the physical version because it's the same price as the digital version, but I'll be entering the code that comes with it and downloading the game from Steam at about 20MB per second. It seems a waste, but I'll enjoy owning the physical version, even though the discs will literally never exit the case. We're living in a transitional time.

Lol holy cow.. Digital convenience got here just in time! I pity those of you with bandwidth caps, or everyone without Fibre Op with this size of file! I do usually enjoy physical copies, particularly with GTA games, but seven discs is just a tad overkill... sounds like a real fun install.

You expect me to believe there are PC players that still buy their games physically?

@Tekcor: PC players doesn't equate to just the West. You've no idea what the internet is really like in other countries. 65 GB could be way over some people's bandwidth caps, 65 GB could be a massive pain if you live in a rural area or an under-developed area where internet speeds are lower... I mean there are a ton of factors as to why there's a physical release. I would think that the size of the game has a hell of a lot to do with it.

@doomstrain: Yeah, I understand that mistake. I got a physical copy of Destiny for my X1 because it was cheap, and I regret it all the time. Switching discs is so... provincial.

Only platform I don't buy digital games for is the Wii U, since Nintendo hasn't figured out how to do it correctly yet. And it bugs me every time I do.

In case you can't tell, I'm playing the "master race" persona here. Although I do prefer the PC, and have dumped thousands into mine, I own consoles too. I do prefer digital greatly, but obviously people still like their coasters. To each his own.

@oroelf: Would prefer flash drives or some other non volatile form. Everyone has USB ports, so there would be no extra hardware to buy.

@5hd6j@oroelf: I actually think the flash drive idea is really good. I can see game-branded flash drives going into circulation

but the guy above me is right, 64GB flash drives already cost like half the price of the game on their own

@5hd6j@oroelf: It all comes down to medium cost. Back in the day it literally cost pennies to print a CD. Even if they got some wholesale deal on the 64gb USB drives it would still cut into their bottom line too much. That's why plastic media like cd/dvd/bluray are mass produced.

I'm glad they did it. I always backup/convert my games and don't rely on digital because it's not always good in all situations so this is a plus for me.

As much as I like physical...good thing I played this on PS4 already. On one disc. Are they stupid? What's wrong with putting the game on one or two BD, or even a flash drive?

Going to wait till this game is $5 or less, mods and better textures aren't worth buying the game at retail price a second time.

Also curious about what DRM will be present.

i'm still waiting for them to start releasing games on flash drives... OR

let you bring a flash drive to a store or kiosk like redbox and have it copied to your flash drive.

ok, yeah... just found it.. 59gb.. could be done on a 64gb usb... still not too much and should install soo much faster.
