Those hoping to grow their backlogs on the cheap today are in luck: For the next 24 hours, you can download tactical shooter Sniper Elite V2 free of charge from Steam.

Sniper Elite V2 was released on PC in 2012 by series developer Rebellion. It's a lengthy game for a shooter and offers traditional multiplayer and cooperative play online, which is always welcome. However, the game's AI can be problematic, as noted in our review. Considering it's free, though, there's no reason not to give it a try.

The promotion runs from now through June 5 at 10 AM Pacific. It's no doubt meant to give everyone a taste of the Sniper Elite series, which will see the release of its latest game, Sniper Elite III, on July 1 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in North America.

dear "PCMASTERRACE",

a free retail game is a free retail game, no matter what platform it's on, or if it's download only or not, it's still awesome companies are willing to give out games once in a while... and in some cases (like the guys who made hotline miami) LET you pirate their games... it's just awesome no matter what, because they respect the gamers period

<3,

I suppose the free game is meant to encourage players to buy some dlc? But anyway will give it a try (unfortunately it'll have to wait until I figure out RPG Maker from Humble Bundle!)

All of the people sniping at one another about the quality of free games on their platform of choice, just sound like a bunch of grumpy old women. I'm sure that's not how they think of themselves, but self delusion is easy.

Perhaps it's wrong of me to snipe at this free game offer, but I'd never play this unless I got paid for it.

Now this is a legit free game, none of that "free if you pay us money every month, and if you stop, you won't have access to it anymore" crap that consoles do.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> xbox live does... that person is just being a "ignorantpcelitemasterracetroll" as far as i can tell... that said being a multi-console/pc gamer i think you should do your research about the free games systems on other platforms first fella ;) psn so far is the only one that doesn't let you keep the games if you don't have a sub, though i wouldn't doubt microsoft would do the same thing sometime in the future, because "GIVE ME MONEY!!!!"

They might as well be giving it away at this point for as many times as this thing has shown up in sales. At one point it was almost as obnoxious as having those train sim DLCs showing up everywhere.

Wait??? I didn't have to pay ANY subscription to get this game for free??? What happened to the "benefits" of being a PS + and Xbox Gold member? I thought those subscriptions were justified by the "free" games.

Are you suggesting that the $20 a quarter I pay for 12-18 games in that time is a rip-off?. If so you have an odd idea of value.

Hahaha. What about 0$ for free games. Huge difference. Guess what as well I don't need to keep "subscribing" to play this game. You are part of the sheep if you believe you are getting a fair deal.

I love how EA yesterday said that they offer games that people will actually play and then put NHL 09 on sale. And steam just gives us a good game for free, gg no re EA

@somberfox Well its good because you can go create an steam account for free and get this game for free... that's it no sub fee needed

... its kinda sad that gamers have become such a jaded bunch and segregated from each other that even if someone gives away a free game people who have chosen a different device to play their games on cannot see how someone else's thing could ever be good.

I don't have money for my gaming PC yet, but thanks to free games through Steam and Origin and cheap games through sales and Humble Bundles, along with free-to-play titles, I have a good amount of 50 or so games in my backlog to play once I finally get a good rig setup...been a console gamer all my life so I have a lot to catch up on. That's not even including the few physical games I have as well.

All I have right now is a laptop that's over 4 years old and an old computer that's like 8 years old. I want a good computer that has good performance, RAM, memory, etc. so I can play games at max settings so I can get the best performance, graphics, and experience out of the games as possible, and one that will last me awhile for future games, as well. I also need a computer good for video editing, so that will all help as well. I don't have anything for a PC right now so, yes, I'm going to build a gaming PC when I get the chance.
