The Godfather II was among several high-profile games that Electronic Arts pushed out of its current fiscal year in February. However, even with the extended development time, EA's Redwood Shores studio was apparently unable to cram everything planned for the Godfather II's initial release onto the already-gold game's disc.

Today, the publisher said that the multiplayer mode Don Control will be released as a free patch day and date with the Godfather II's launch. As detailed in GameSpot's just-published hands-on with the mode, Don Control plays out much like the Godfather II's other multiplayer modes. However, in Don Control, two players take leadership roles in their respective eight-man teams, wagering single-player currency on the outcome of the match.

The Godfather II will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and is expected to arrive in North America on April 7, with the European rollout occurring three days later. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.
