God of War movie gets Saw writers

Universal Studios brings on Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan to rewrite film adaptation of Sony's brutal action game.

The upcoming God of War movie from Universal Studios is still alive, and its new script is being written by Saw series scribes Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter. Melton and Dunstan wrote Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D.

Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.
Kratos' big-screen debut is being written by the minds behind the latest Saw movies.

Charles Roven and Alex Garnter, producers of the forthcoming film based on Naughty Dog's Uncharted action franchise, are producing the God of War movie via Atlas Entertainment.

No mention was made of a director or actors for the God of War film, and a release date has not been nailed down. In 2008, Rush Hour director Brett Ratner was attached to helm the project, but it is unclear if he is still involved.

News regarding game-to-movie adaptations has been buzzing of late. Just this week, Ubisoft announced that X-Men: First Class and Inglourious Basterds star Michael Fassbender will play the lead role in the upcoming Assassin's Creed film. Additionally, yesterday, CBS Films picked up the rights to make a movie based on Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

God of War: Ascension is due out in March 2013. It is a prequel to the original trilogy, and the first entry in the series to sport a multiplayer component. For more on the project, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

"Lets play a game" ~ Kratos.I'm boycotting all of these video game movies. I'm tired of watching games get massacred on the silver screen. You cannot take a video game that offers a 7-9 hour experience and cram it into a 2 hour window, their hope is that by taking an established character they can skip all of the backstory in the film and focus more on the conflict, but all that does is encourage lazy story telling, and corner cutting (take Silent Hill for example), and its not worth the ticket price to see that.

If it would have been James Wan and Leigh Whannell, the original SAW writers...I could have been a little bit hopeful...but you know...we will see.

It will be a gory movie, that's for sure. And Liam Neeson shoul be Zeus, he's perfect for the role.

Kill me, kill me now. The GoW franchise has amazing potentials for movie adaptations and hollywood went and shit all over it. Might as well just make this a direct to dvd and call it a day. Hell, make a flash animation film with stick figures and call it a day.

History wasn't kind to films and games mixing. Maybe this'll be a breakthrough (doubt it though).

"Melton and Dunstan wrote Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, and Saw 3D."

This is why we can't have nice things.

Anyway, Jason Momoa for Kratos. I do hope that horrible Conan movie didn't f**k up his career too bad.

@leimonides @megadeth1117 It was a huge bomb, it made $49 million on a $90 million budget. But you're right, Momoa did the best he could, but the script failed him.

@adam1808 Are you talking about:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0816462/

Me and everyone that I've met love that movie. I'm genually shocked if so. Well hey I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion...but I thought the sword-fighting was pretty cool imo...

I think maybe Vin Diesel could be a good candidate for the role. Hopefully it doesn't become a disaster like the Wrath of the titans and clash of the titans. Those movie didn't have the action hyped up on the trailers. Hopefully they make it a gore and action packed film and don't ruin the Kratos character.

@breybone Ironically it would more than likely be pg-13 since so many kids have played the game it may attain to the teenage audience. It would make it very crappy too

@pspman1997 I agree, but if they have any sense they will make it a rated "R" movie, just the idea of the Saw writer is on it might give a hint it may be a rated "R" movie. You are right if it is a PG-13 movie it will completely destroy the movie idea.

Considering the Saw writers can't write, this movie is already doomed.

Can you hear it? That's the sound of this movie sucking harder than a black hole filled with pornstars and vacuum cleaners.

The writers of the Saw series? Really? What, did the writers of Steven Seagal's direct-to-video hits like "Pistol Whipped" and "Born to Raise Hell" want too much money? The guys who wrote the TV spin-off series of the Geico caveman commercials weren't available? Was Universal afraid that hiring a hundred monkeys to work at a hundred typewriters might trigger another writers' strike?

I sometimes wonder if Hollywood doesn't secretly have a wager going to see which studio can produce the crappiest video game adaptation.

Out of all the video games based movies so far, Assassin's Creed looks like the best one to get a good start. I am so glad the Ubisoft has more control since it is THEIR franchise and they will do everything to keep it in line.

What is up with this recent "MAKE MOVIES OUT OF EVERY GAME!" craze?Video game movies are doodoo, I honestly cant remember even one that was good. And the Saw writers? Sure yeah thats promising, almost zero chance of being any good. This makes me worry since a God of War movie has ALOT of potential to be good but how is someone gonna make anythign epic in one and a half hour? Thats one of the reasons why movies piss me off. You cant stuff all that lore, character developement ect in such a short time. Especially not with poor writers.

God of war is an exciting series and full of rich content and mythos. You would think this would be enough to make an amazing movie. I'll try and remain opomistic but video games that become movies are rarely very exciting, deep, or thought provoking. They are rarely ever that good either. Can we say Bloodrayne?
