Ghost Recon Breakpoint Open Beta Starts Next Week

Get ready to go Ghost just before the game drops.

13 Comments

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint launches in October, but you can jump in to an open beta a little sooner than that. Ubisoft has announced that the beta will run from September 26-29 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The beta will be staggered between platforms, but the times themselves are synced up globally so you can play with other ghosts across the world. Ubisoft also said this open beta will take into account some of the feedback from the recent closed beta, with a blog that details the exact improvements forthcoming.

Now Playing: Ghost Recon Breakpoint Isn't What You Think

The open beta will include your first look at the Ghost War PvP, with only Elimination Mode open for the test. It will consist of four maps: Skell Port, PMC Camp, Cold War Bunker, and Deserted Harbor.

In the PvE mode, you'll have access to two new regions that weren't available in the closed beta--New Argyll and Infinity--for a total of six. You'll also be able to play five missions in total, three of which are new from the closed beta: Back to Basics, Skell on the Move, and The Enemy of My Enemy. The skill-testing Drone Areas are back from the closed beta as well.

Ubisoft notes that your progress from the beta won't transfer to the main game. This will be the first major release in Ubisoft's Uplay+ subscription, which gives you unlimited access to new Ubisoft releases. If you're a subscriber as of October 1, you'll get early access to the Breakpoint Ultimate Edition. The studio also recently revealed Breakpoint's PC specs.

I was in the closed alpha and beta. I guess I'm legally not allowed to go into the details (signed NDA), so I'll just leave it at this: they've made it into a Division-like loot shooter. If you're into realism, which a lot of GR-fans are to some degree, skip this one. I for sure will.

Okay, I played the beta of it a week or so ago. Then I read the progress won't carry over to the game's release. I will be skipping this open beta because I don't plan on putting any more time into it until my progress saves and carries forward.

The game is OK, but it is very tedious to get around at first. Yes, you can steal a vehicle or fly a helicopter, but enemies seem to be everywhere and so unless you stealth crouch walk across the entire huge country or fight every single checkpoint (and somehow avoid helicopter and drone patrols) you're constantly fighting. I also don't like how you can only "show" up to 3 objectives at a time. i wish there was a way for it to list all of the objectives (or maybe like up to 10), so that I can do multiple objectives while in a particular area.

I had lots of fun with Wildlands, both single player and co-op. This game on the other hand, was not fun at all. So many bugs, tacked on The Division style rpg elements and horrible performance. I think I'll skip this one.

I still wonder how those subscription services can be profitable. If they charge around 10 bucks per month for it and you can cancel it at any time, and you release your newest games on it from the start, then people might very well just pay for a month and then cancel it again until anything else comes out that might interest them. So how could this possibly make up for the loss in profits from people not buying their games at full price anymore? I guess them being able to keep 100% of the profits makes a big difference there, especially if there's any truth to that old claim that retail keeps about half of a game's sale price for itself. But even then that would be $30, which means that you'd have to subscribe to the service for about 3 months just to get to the same profit numbers. And this equation completely disregards all those overpriced super special deluxe editions as well, which seem to have beome a very nice source of additional income for publishers nowadays. There's lots of people willing to pay up to $100, if not more, for one single game. Enough to subscribe to a service like Ubisoft's for almost a year, assuming there's no reduced prices if you do subscribe for a whole year right away.

@Atzenkiller:

Retail only gets like $5 of a brand new game the rest goes to the developer/publisher.

@Marky360: I kinda doubt that as any digital store owner takes a bigger cut than that. And big retail stores have way bigger costs to cover than a digital platform.

@Atzenkiller:

Well this could be our dated information but when I worked at GameStop that was how things worked GameStop only made about $5 of a brand new game that's why they pushed used game sales so much because there they take home a full 100% of the profit minus what they paid for it but then that's why they also offer such a crappy amount in trade. This was awhile ago so maybe things have changed altho the price of games hasn't so I'm willing to bet this hasn't not either.

@gamingdevil800: Curious. Is it about the same as Wildlands? If so, I'll probably get it.

@USDevilDog: It's worse than wildlands in every way. They probably had a skeleton crew on this game.

@gamingdevil800: Roger that. Thanks for the assessment. I don't know how they were able to drop the ball on this one. They could have just copied and pasted Wildlands with a different skin and I would have bought it despite all of its flaws (AI, vehicle controls, not tactically realistic, repetitive open world objectives) since my buds and I like squad shooters. We enjoyed Wildlands overall. But if it's considerably worse than the already flawed Wildlands, I am going to pass.
