Ghost Of Tsushima And Last Of Us 2 Release Dates Are Set For This Summer

It's back-to-back blockbusters as Sony announces two of its biggest PS4 games, The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima, will hit within a month of each other.

Ghost of Tsushima's State of Play event is bringing new gameplay on May 14, with an 18-minute broadcast focused on showcasing things like exploration and combat. If you're wondering when you can play the new PS4 game, it was recently pushed back but is still coming fairly soon: Ghost of Tsushima's release date is set for July 17.

Sony has announced new release dates for two of its biggest PS4 blockbusters, The Last of Us 2 and Ghost of Tsushima. Both had been delayed indefinitely due to coronavirus, but are now coming within the next couple of months. The Last Of Us 2 is launching June 19, and Ghost of Tsushima, the next game from Sucker Punch, will follow on July 17--about a month later than previously anticipated. [Update: On May 4, Naughty Dog confirmed that The Last of Us 2 has gone gold, which is a positive sign that the game will indeed release on time. A new Last of Us 2 trailer is also out now, further showcasing the story that's set to unfold with Ellie and company.]

Now Playing: New Last Of Us Part 2 Release Date, Ghost Of Tsushima Moves To July

A note on the PlayStation Blog from Worldwide Studios head Hermen Hulst says these dates are possible due to "an ease in the global distribution environment."

"I want to personally congratulate and thank both the teams at Naughty Dog and Sucker Punch Productions on their achievements, as we know it's not an easy feat to reach the finish line under these circumstances," Hulst wrote. "Both teams have worked hard to deliver world-class experiences, and we can't wait to see what you think of them when they release in just a few short months."

The Last of Us 2 had been delayed earlier this month, with no new release date set at the time. That delay cited logistical challenges due to the global pandemic despite nearing completion, which pushed the game from its May 29 release date. The new date means it was ultimately only delayed by a few weeks.

Ghost of Tsushima has previously been set for a June release date back in March. While it hadn't been delayed indefinitely alongside The Last of Us 2, its release date was in doubt due to the same factors. This effectively gives TLOU 2 its June slot, and bumps Tsushima back a month.

Meanwhile, plot details for The Last of Us 2 have leaked online, and Naughty Dog has issued a statement urging fans to avoid spoilers and refrain from spreading them.

Had a PS4 since launch and never cared for these two. The Last of Us Part II know full well doesn't due to my experience with the first game. And never enjoyed a game by Sucker Punch.

For those who have waited for anything about these two? I think this is great.

Though honestly I'd rather read what Blue Point & Project Siren/ Team Gravity have been working on.

@lurker_: Something wrong with you if you do not understand a difference in gaming preference.

Either way trailers rarely win me over for a sale. Sure they can be fun chunks of presentation, but that's marketing 101 (grab attention regardless of product). And simply not that gullible.

Usually what grabs my interest in the latest games is notes about how the game plays, and goals for the project.

Take Baldur's Gate III for example. I'm very excited for that game. And that's certainly not to do with the flashy intro trailer(s).

@lurker_: 'meh'

I don't play games for stories and graphics by default. As added layers? Sure. But that's not the case if Infamous series is any indication. I prefer a well oiled machine.

Also rarely care for sandbox level design, more often than not offer flat gameplay showing a lot of cracks in enemy A.I. and combat options. Openworld maps ditch depth for immersion purposes. 'Again' Infamous is a great example of this_

But you have fun, I'm not telling you what to enjoy. Must be shocking to know the world of gaming is big enough for us to have variety.

@RSM-HQ: If story, graphics, open world/sandbox games don't really initially interest you, then can you give us some examples of games that you really like?

Not in any way trying to shit on your opinions, just trying to understand where you're coming from. ;)

@aross2004: Well because you asked so nicely some examples of recent years- Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, Dusk, Divinity: Original Sin II, the recent Resident Evil Remakes, Devil May Cry V, and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim just to name a few.

Enjoy a bunch of genres and tend to give as much as I can a fair chance; yet I lean towards games that are giving me options, challenges, and a lot of control. While I'm sure these two games will be great for those who seek it, feel I've tried and couldn't appreciate games much like them both.

But on that note I can enjoy to some extent all three things, as noted I prefer them as extra layers. If they're not really distracting from more core elements I value. Have enjoyed some open world games, I just think an open world needs to be designed with that layout as a focus. Sandbox level design is not good by default, Metal Gear Solid V is a good example that didn't use openworld design very well.

@lurker_: Thanks for understanding.

I could appreciate what The Witcher 3 is, and even call it a fantastic package. But personally I got bored with it due to not really enjoying the combat and how certain bigger enemies reacted. Red Dead Redemption 2 have not touched but get the feeling it wouldn't fit me either.

As mentioned I don't dislike these games, they just don't gravitate towards me personally. But that's ok, so long as a demographic is enjoying them that speaks for itself.

They honestly should of just released both exclusive games on both ps4 and PS5 as cross gen titles. I would of Glady waited until PS5 released to pick this game up and enjoy it on a stronger console

@gifford38: The Last of Us 1 was good because it was bold and didn't give the player what they wanted story wise. They seem to be doing the same thing here. They are challenging the player with this story. They aren't just making a cheap fan service sequel here. Now weather its actually good, we will see. Given Naughty Dog's history, the answer will probably be yes.

@robbehG: It sucks though. I know some are mad at the whole LGBT characters and some are mad at the major changes but people need to just not knock it before they try it. They should've just released it digitally and ND needs to treat their employees better so they won't have another disgruntled employee doing major damage.

@rasterror: I don't even know why the first game had to have a sequel. Wasn't the ending conclusive enough?

Besides, I have a feeling that the gameplay will be a downgrade as well. I loved the Uncharted series in general but hated the gameplay and level design changes in Uncharted 4. Bigger is not better.

@cboye18: I forced myself to play Uncharteds AWFUL boring/stale/clich'e action quitime'esh gameplay...I was soo amped when I got Uncharted 2 uber edition on PS3 with all this DLC. Maybe I got it from PS+ I FORGET.

I musta tried 20+ more sessions after I was annoyed. I finally gave up accepting that this is for a younger audience who didn't already live the m80's +90's corny action movies w/ cliffhanger near-death moments around every turn.....

@sippio: Coming from playing the Gears of War trilogy I had a hard time playing the Uncharted games as well at first, but I grew to like it as it reminded me of Indiana Jones. It's not for everyone I guess but for what it does they're pretty great imo.

@chubby170: I watched the DLC on youtube and couldn't bother buying it afterwards. Gameplay was dumbed down and I couldn't care less about Ellie's sexual background; it was always her growing relationship with Joel that was genuinely appealing to follow.

Now that she's a seemingly frustrated grown-up, I just kinda lost interest in her character development and her character as a whole.

wasn't about that. it was about Ellie losing someone close to her that sets up her trust for other people in the game. her mood towards other people of not caring for someone to be hurt in the end because like she said to joel when he said you have no idea what lost is. ellie says really everyone i care about has either died or left. except for you as she pushes joel. this whole gay thing is stupid. who the hell cares that she kisses a girl. not like they put a whole lesbian scene of them doing well you know.

but ok to have full fledged sex scenes in the witcher 3

@rasterror: Yeah I've seen them myself. I can see why it would piss people off, but I do think it fits with the themes to the last of us 1. Those who want anything close to a retread of the first game are going to be upset though. It will all come down to the execution.
