Although details are still relatively sparse, Variety is reporting that both a game show and a feature film centered on the Rubik's Cube are in the pipeline. While surprising, it isn't exactly a shock given that an upcoming Slinky movie has demonstrated the water is fine for ideas like these--and that Netflix's The Queen's Gambit has driven a huge increase in chess sales. People are stoked for old-school games, and the popularity of Netflix's 2020 documentary The Speed Cubers (about the competitive Rubik's Cube scene) shows there's demand for more content on the twisting, multicolored cube.

The Rubik's Cube film will be produced via a partnership between Ashok Amritraj's Hyde Park Entertainment Group and Endeavor Content, though no plot details or casting choices have yet been announced. Amritraj has produced films dating back to 1984, including standout hits like 1999's action-thriller The Boondock Saints and 2005's Shopgirl, an adaptation of comedian Steve Martin's novella with the same name.

"I've had a personal and nostalgic connection to the Rubik's Cube from my early days in India," said Amritraj. "I am thrilled to partner with Endeavor Content and Rubik's/Smiley and look forward to creating a wonderful and complex Rubik's universe."

The upcoming Rubik's Cube game show will be executive produced by Amritraj and Andrew Glassman of Glassman Media. While Amritraj has grand ambitions of creating a Rubik's Cube cinematic universe, it should be noted that there was--of course--Rubik, the Amazing Cube, a 1983 Saturday morning cartoon series celebrating the toy.
