GameStop Expecting New PlayStation and Xbox Consoles in the "Next Few Years"

With rumors swirling about potential new PlayStation and Xbox consoles, GameStop CEO Paul Raines has now come out to say he expects to see "some new consoles in the next few years."

In an interview with [a]listdaily (via VideoGamer.com), Raines teased that GameStop knows more than it can share on this front.

"We anticipate that we'll see some new consoles in the next few years," he said. "We don't like to talk about that because our partners get upset if we jump ahead, so we'll let them disclose that."

Given that GameStop is one of the biggest players in the gaming retail business, it would make sense that the company talks to platform-holders about their plans before information is shared publicly. Recently, Raines revealed the PlayStation VR delay before it was publicly announced.

Whenever new consoles are released, GameStop expects to be "pretty dominant" in selling them, Raines said. This is in part because the company has a network of 46 million PowerUp Rewards members, which it can market to with email blasts and other campaigns.

"Consoles are good for us any way you slice it," Raines said.

A new, more powerful version of the PS4 codenamed Neo is reportedly on the way. Microsoft, too, is apparently thinking about releasing new hardware, with a recent report claiming a new Xbox device would be announced at E3. Nintendo will launch its new system, the NX, is March 2017.

During GameStop's Investor Day briefing in April, COO Tony Bartel also referenced upcoming console launches.

"Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent," Bartel said.
