They will have to make the digital copy 15-20$ cheaper than the physical copy for people to embrace digital. Otherwise they will be no real benefit to going all digital. No matter the games. Even Nintendo's Super Luigi U is 10 bucks cheaper for the digital version.

@bunchanumbers I'm hoping that the two systems , digital and disc, can co-exist side-by-side.

@bunchanumbers absolutely. even if i buy digital games, it will ONLY be for the lower echelon of games and NOT the games i VALUE most.

i would never even think of buying tes, fallout, half-life, etc. at even super discounted prices.

I think my first foray into mods was Civ 2 Ultimate Edition, I probably spent as much time in the editor as I did actually playing the game!

Good times were had. <NOSTALGIA/>

@mlp071 @udubdawgz @bunchanumbers oh, i'll be rebuying all of em when i get my new pc, lol.

i hear you with the gameplay hours. nothing worse than reading a review and a game getting high replay/longevity score for a game that lasts under 40 and a second or third playthrough has no MEANINGFUL difference.

on the bright side: think how NEW and awesome my favorite games are going to be when i add the mods? it'll be xmas time all year long, lol.

@mlp071 @udubdawgz @bunchanumbers Sometimes I wish I had the discipline to try the whole "lag gaming plan" where you only get games 6 or 12 months after release.

Quality wise you aren't far behind, but price wise you end up saving a ton.

Alas, I just don't have the strength of will when a game I really like comes around.... :)

@bunchanumbers It will certainly be interesting to see what kind of difference they offer in digital compared to physical.

GSGuy321 also alluded to the possibility of bonus items and content being available to digital only. Perhaps even early releasing of the games or maybe early access to DLC for digital customers, etc....

Going to be interesting to see how they try to balance the relative values of each method of purchase, hopefully it will be a way that neither side feels hard done by (although that will probably be tricky!).

It's going to be very interesting...

I think those that made the prediction that the consoles will essentially become PCs are ultimately correct. And in many ways much much worse. At least on PC we have an open platform, with choice and competition.

There's still a lot the publisher's can do to push digital, without looking to much like douches and relying on DRM. Like making a digital copy available a few days before the disc release date. That right there will convert many people to the digital system.

The truth is both consoles will be moving more and more towards the digital realm. But Sony did it smarter. They didn't bring an all-out assault against disc based gaming. They'll support disc based gaming more out of the gate. However, it remains to be seen whether their policies will favour a shift towards digital. For example, earlier release of digital version and cheaper.

I think they announced during the conference that 60% of vita sales are digital. That's pretty remarkable.

@GSGuy321 I don't find the Vita figure very impressive. I mean, we're talking about the Vita. Only tech nuts and PlayStation uber-fans bought it. That demographic represents a rather skewed portrait of gamers.

I'd be more interested in figures for digital/physical dual-release PlayStation 3 games. I'm willing to bet that figure would be much less substantial.

@GSGuy321 Wow, 60% is impressive, although also makes sense for something you carry around, you don't want to have to take all your game discs/cartridges around all the time.

Home gaming on a console is a different beast, how much people shift to digital in this gen will be interesting. MS clearly is betting virtually everything goes digital, and have put their eggs in that basket. Sony have kept their options open a little more it would seem.

In my eyes Steam's main competition has always been physical games.

Just like I think will be the case with X1 or PS4. They will have to offer digital for better value than physical from retailers, as we have already discussed how you get more value from having the actual disc.

Therefore there will still be competition.

The Publisher's will make a push to drive the user to the digital. How they do that remains to be seen. But they still wield a lot of power regardless of a console's DRM policy.

@gilldominic @mlp071 @GSGuy321 i have to disagree:

- Amazon DD, Impulse gamestop DD, Gamersgate DD, GMG DD, Gamefly DD(former D2D)

Between them i never have to buy any game for more then 50 % of the release price only month or two after release.

Best psrt of it is almost all codes from other DD retailers work on Steam if you choose to.

@GSGuy321 @mlp071 @gilldominic one more thing , in example of Xbox (One and 360)

Microsoft , smartly, doesn't take portion of sale price from any game, but they charge huge fees for release license, dev kits and patches.

That's how theyr etained their "good boy " image with 360 , since nbo one know that they are the one driving prices up.

@mlp071 @GSGuy321 @gilldominic I agree that the saving will never be the same as Steam. Yup.

But what I'm saying is that the Publisher still has a lot of power in all this to control things regardless of the console's DRM policy.

That's why it's PC all the way for me in next gen :)

@mlp071 @GSGuy321 @gilldominic To be honest, Steam doesn't have any significant competition for digital downloads. Origin and Steam don't offer the same games.

Despite this lack of competition, Steam tends to be a pretty decent distribution platform in my opinion....

They can choose to release digital only and see what reaction will be , sale wise...Then yeah it would be up to them.

But if you still disc available option then used game price will lower down new game price as well..not that much choice there.

@gilldominic @GSGuy321 But:

1) People will still have choice to buy on disc and thus making up that difference, money wise , by selling/trading that after they are done with game.

2) Prices do not go down unless you have competition, and ecosystem on Xbox 1 doesn't have that. PC is different matter because there are several places where you can purchase that download.I have bought games less then 2 months after their release for only fraction of their original release price.

Just 2 basic reasons why this wouldn't work on Xbox One...in 2 words no competition...

I prefer discs too. And I'm a PC player.

But the reality is that the vast majority will go for the digital if it's bundled and offered a certain way. For example, earlier and/or cheaper.

@gilldominic @GSGuy321 the advantage of having a disc in the current system is that i can play when, how, and, with whom i want.

i dictate the terms and 'they', lol, have no power or source of further financial gain.

i will pay higher prices, if necessary, for that consumer power.

convenience, ease, accessibility and price are never more important.

@GSGuy321 With Steam you can pre-install to PLAY at 12:01 on release day. I imagine both consoles will offer that functionality.

The key question is the pricing. The ability to trade in the physical disc (still have to see the details on who you can trade in to regarding the X1) is the main advantage of buying physically. However if they price the download significantly lower than the disc price, they'll risk burning their bridges with retailers as people go for the cheaper download instead.

It's going to be an interesting generation in this regard.

I think you're right that publishers will probably start offering special extras for getting digital and such to get people within a DRM protected environment whichever platform they use....

@GSGuy321 and we don't know their official stance towards digital copies. The interview I listened to said there obviously would be more restrictions since it is so easy to make copies of digital games. It makes sense but we won't know what Sony will do about it until a later event.

@bunchanumbers @GSGuy321

How could you copy a digital game on the PS4? I don't know how it would work but if it is at all like a PS3 then you really don't have access to the files and their is no way I know of to copy them. Maybe if you could hack it you could gain access to the file but the number of people who would do that or could do that must be small. But when it comes to discs they are easy to copy. Also there it no software set up on the PS4 to enforce DRM like on the XB1, with the PS4 you can never hook it up to the internet and still play games, so there is no way to enforce DRM on it.

Agreed. I suspect there will definitely be restrictions. However, not nearly as much as XB1. It will be more along the lines of Steam I would think: You log in to get access to your games once and away you go. Also, there is an offline mode.

@GSGuy321 Yes, they clearly stated in their presentation that they wouldn't have any check ins, so it follows that digital downloads will not require further online functionality (unless the actual game needs it to work) for you to play after downloading and installing it.

I find it strange that the official Xbox One forums are completely dead I mean 0 posts. But when you check out other parts of Xbox forums they seem to be talking a little and most are unhappy with the XB1. I thought if there was anywhere that people were happy with it it would be there.

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/xbox_one/default.aspx

http://forums.xbox.com/xbox_forums/general_discussion/f/3817/p/1406239/3517303.aspx

Maybe MS is deleting everything, I don't want to sound like a conspiracy nut but 0 posts WTF. Plus the fact that they disabled comments on their YouTube channel after too many negative reactions leads my to believe it could be possible.

@Ne-Plus-Ultra Who wants to use an official forum like that to discuss gaming anyway?

You'd only surround yourself by fanboys and sycophants for one side. Anyone with half a brain should populate an open, balanced venue for discussion instead.

I go on the PlayStation forums all the time and they're loaded with people who help each other out, plus there are rarely any times when someone wants to start a fanboy war there. And if you need anything answered concerning any PS issues it's the best place to go. Although I don't think I have ever went there to discuss games, they do talk about them though, but for some strange reason I have never went there for that reason. I think you're right though that other sites would be better for game discussion because of their diversity.

@Ne-Plus-Ultra @gilldominic Yes, sorry, I didn't put my point across very clearly. I was mainly referring to the discussion of the "console war" as referred to in the original point.

For general support and console specific inquiries then it would make sense I'm sure.

Well there is thread started by some guy in 360 forum claiming that One will destroy PS4 only to be shut up by other 360 users...he appears to only one in whole thread that was holding that side :
