Game Of Thrones Creators Working On New Star Wars Movie Series

So long, Westeros.

Who needs a vacation? While Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are currently wrapping up the end of the epic HBO series, they already have their next project lined up, and it's a massive one. The duo will write and produce a series of Star Wars films.

The news comes from Lucasfilm, which says in a press release that the films the duo are developing will be separate from the current Skywalker saga and the trilogy of movies that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson is working on. "David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today," Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says. "Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting."

For their part, Benioff and Weiss are excited about trading Westeros for space. "In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we've been dreaming of it ever since," the duo says in a statement. "We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete."

Game of Thrones is currently in production on its final season. No release dates have been set for these new Star Wars movie, but clearly, Benioff and Weiss will start their work on the films once they've wrapped filming on the HBO series. What remains in question is what becomes of Confederate, the previously announced series from the duo that was developing as their follow-up series on the network. When asked about the status of the series, HBO tells GameSpot, "We don't have any additional information at this time." Upon being first announced, the series--which is set in a world where the southern states actually seceded from the Union and slavery remained legal--was met with a very negative reaction.

Um but GOT is only so good cause of George RR Martin and as soon as they ran out of book material the quality of the show dropped which was highlighted in an article by GameSpot writers for that episode with the suicide squad getting trapped on a frozen lake... I'm sceptical cause their track record apart from GOT isn't very good.

Confederate will never materialize, because people are far too PC and can't seem to separate a work of fantasy from reality.

As soon as you mention slavery, all conversation is out the window. Much like mentioning WW II Nazis...

@CyberEarth: I know, I wish people were allowed to make games and movies about WW II Nazis. It sucks that nobody has ever done that before.

@NaturallyEvil: You can make movies/games about Nazis, but they have to be evil bastards, through and through. Even Man in the High Castle caught a lot of flak about it's portrayal of Nazis (and Japanese), and that show doesn't even paint them in a remotely friendly light (just more of a human one).

My point is that when you have an alternate history showing evil bastards like slave owners and Nazis even remotely next to any sort of friendly inference (or imply that they "won"), it's going to catch a ton of PC backlash. The writers even said they have no script, no plot, nothing yet - and people are still upset and "protesting". If that's not PC over-protectionism, I don't know what is.

While this sounds like a match made in heaven, I think they need to pump the breaks on Star Wars just a tad. You can’t try to turn it into the next Marvel Universe. People are going to get burned out, especially with the current fracture of the fan base. I really think someone needs to take the reins from Kennedy.

@The_Inebriator: They are still making lots of money.

This is the one case where I actually wish that just decreasing income would be grounds for a big plan hiatus. If a game doesn't make as much money as expected, the house gets shut down. Here it seems like Kathleen & The Co. is thinking that they must now squeeze out as much as they can right now even if the quality and coherency suffers. The Saw approach, even if popularity and sense slowly sinks, make as many before the inevitable end comes

It is pretty funny how Disney retconned all the star wars stories and people thought they are now going in with a more focused approach. This is the opposite. Even with the main episodes they now give artistic control to both J.J. and Rian, in sequential movies they can do what they want with little regard to what the other guy did. At this rate there will just be another retcon coming in the future.
