Stardock today announced Galactic Civilizations III, a sequel to 2006's Galactic Civilizations II: Dread Lords. The new game is in development exclusively for 64-bit PCs. No release date was been announced.

Galactic Civilizations III, a turn-based strategy game, will include new features like multiplayer, "political intrigue," and "vastly improved visuals." New terrain elements like black holes, a "completely overhauled" ship builder, and a new resource system are also included.

"The move to 64-bit architecture heralds a new era of game development at Stardock," Stardock vice president Derek Paxton in a statement. "The technology allows players to experience a level of graphical detail and on-screen activity unprecedented in large-scale strategy PC games. It dramatically increases the size and scope of the maps, and opens the door for modders to add a virtually unlimited amount of new content to the game."

Players can join the Galactic Civilizations III Founder's program today at $40 to receive beta access through the game's website. Meanwhile, the $100 Founder's Elite Edition gives players all future DLC and expansions when they are released, as well as alpha access, their name in the credits, and the ability to name a star that will appear in-game.

The announcement of Galactic Civilizations III comes as Stardock celebrates its 20th anniversary. The company was founded by Brad Wardell in his college dorm room and has since released games like Sins of a Solar Empire and various non-game software like Start8.

@linkdarkside You should try it; it's like Civilizations only more challenging, and it's in space! (I'm pretty sure Galactic Civ II has a demo that you can download and try)

I'm excited! I'm hoping for more lively planets, the kind that's relevant to the game the way Bajor is in Star Trek.

Excellent news. Galactic Civ 2 is one of my favorite strategy games. I'm intrigued to see the benefits of it being 64 bit though.

Galactic Civ. 2 was AMAZING so I can hardly wait for this! That and Stardock is a fantastic company when it comes to PC devs and deserve every sale they get.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not often at all, but considering I could of done at any point in the last 8 years or so and get a 64 bit that's not really important.

Also most gaming PC's should really have more than 3GB of Memory, which would mean using a 64 bit OS.

Besides what such a big deal about an OS installation or upgrade?

Huge news! I am a huge fan of Galactic Civ II and their expansions. Although, I'm not a big fan of adding multiplayer. :[

<< LINK REMOVED >> It'll be interesting to see how you can create ships while playing multiplayer. Idk about you but I took upwards around 10-15 minutes making ships most of the time

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I spent an hour making a ship that I thought was amazing. It died from an enemy scout type ship... So I conquered their world for lulz and lost it to another race... I do miss GalCiv.
