Four Things I Learned After Playing Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

An awakening in the Force.

27 Comments

It seemed almost inevitable that the Lego video game series would return to the film franchise that started it all. So it was no surprise when TT Games confirmed that, 11 years after the release of the original Lego Star Wars, the developer was once again heading to a galaxy far, far away with its take on the movie megahit, Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

After briefly playing the game last week during GDC, I can confidently say that Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a… Lego game. That means everything that has now become standard in this long-running series--the goofy attitude, the kid-friendly nature, the light puzzle solving and simplified combat--are all present. That's not necessarily a negative: despite their similar natures, previous Lego games have succeeded in large part through their undeniable charm and approachable systems.

But with The Force Awakens, TT Games now has one of the biggest films of all time to play with and mold to its unique specifications. So what exactly does this latest Lego game have to offer?

It won't be a simple retelling of the events of the movie

No Caption Provided

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens will of course let you play through most of the film (including that impressive Millennium Falcon sequence in the skies of Jakku), but it'll also have seven new levels that expand on the events in the movie. Some examples confirmed in the game's new trailer include a level about Han Solo and Chewie capturing those octopus-like rathtars, some more backstory on Lor San Tekka (the old dude at the beginning of the film), and a level following the adventures of everyone's favorite new pilot, Poe Dameron. No word on whether these levels are being considered as official canon, but given the light tone of the Lego games, it's likely safe to say they won't be.

Some new features seem pretty superficial right now

This game, of course, won't be a straight copy of previous Lego titles. There are some new features making their debut here, including blaster battles (where light cover mechanics are introduced in certain blaster-heavy sections of the game), full 360-degree aerial/space battles, and choices when it comes to building Lego structures. Those choices, however, don't seem to have a huge impact on what happens within the game (at least in the very limited gameplay time I had), and may end up being purely cosmetic choices that produce the same result.

Daisy Ridley has recorded some new dialogue for the game

Dialogue from the actors in the movie is being used in the game. As an added bonus, it's been confirmed that Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the movie, also recorded new lines just for Lego Star Wars.

There will be a huge list of playable characters

According to a TT Games spokesperson, the game will feature 200 playable Star War characters, as well as 40 vehicles (including mounts). No confirmation on whether that 200 will span all of the Star Wars films or just focus on The Force Awakens, however.

200 characters? I don't think TFA has that many characters. Also, PS version gets early access to The Empire Strikes Back character pack so I think there may be other characters from other episodes too. But, really? We cannot play EpV characters until the exclusivity ends?

@pretty_odddd:

Lego games always have plenty of characters. They;re probably most characters from previous movies.

I hope that the newer features "Light cover mechanics" introduced are easy to understand for a non-gamer :)

The Lego version games are underrated. I think because most might assume its just a basic retell of a story, with parts probably cut out. But it's not. They expand on the content!
They are actually satisfying and feel 'full'. Unlike some other games of today...

There's a ton of Lego games for sale in the Microsoft spring sale right now. Super Marvel Heroes is the only one I've played. Despite some frustrating control issues at times, I really enjoyed it.

"No word on whether these levels are being considered as official canon, but given the light tone of the Lego games, it's likely safe to say they won't be."

I would have to dig up the original articles announcing the game, but I remember reading that at least some of the additional story content in the game will be canon. But for now, the official LEGO site says this about the game:

"The game will also feature exclusive playable content that takes players on adventures between Star Wars: Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, providing additional insight about the new movie and its characters."

That sounds canon to me.

@Alex_Masterson: you are right sir. We are supposed to learn about 3po's red arm which will later be re told in comic form. So new things are canon.

@drocdoc: Plenty enough for this. GTX 970, 16 gb of RAM, i5 6600 etc.

I just love playing my DS is my meaning, as long as it isn't gimped then I really don't mind as I take my 3DS everywhere. Also will depend on if my friends who own a PC will get it or not, if not then it probably will be my 3DS.

@RobDev: Yes I can't think of a better game to play with your kids 6+. However it can be very expensive try to get it on sale and the lvl packs and characters on sale as well. You get a fair amount of game content in the base game and the character packs open up their respective dimensions. the lvl packs open up 1 extras lvl and provide a character and vehicle necessary to collect a fair amount of their dimensions collectables.

its a good game but has in essence $600CAN+ in extremely confusing scummy DLC that you cant 100% the game without. personally the game play is excellent, from a business perspective its brilliant. morally this game is a terrible scam on parents that have to buy the DLC packs for their kids.

@ello432: I've always wondered why people lose their minds over $10 map packs but will snap up amiibo/skylander/dimensions without a word of complaint?

@RobDev:I would say its because an Amiibo, skylander, or minifigure can all be held in your hand its something physical and can be sold off later on if your interest dwindled. A map pack is more of a permanent purchase with nothing physical to show for it.

I can sell my Lego dimensions and all the minifigures I've bought no problem. its hard to sell that map pack

@ello432: maybe, but people who buy those packs may spend 50 hours in MP after. As you said these physical addon figures are just a cash grab but generally people are far less vocal than they should be.

@RobDev:why i think the products are brilliant these games with the figures are more kid orientated games there for fall of the radar of the way more vocal core gamer crowd on mass or most just don't like to admit they play these games. it's a cash grab from adult eyes but these games are for the younger gamers from a merchandising perspective and kids toys are cash grabs to begin with

@RobDev: Well... 'cause they're awesome?

I claim I'm getting 'em for the kids, but they wind up in my man-cave all the same. Few games are as fun to mess around with, when you just want some entertainment.
