Fortnite: Teenage World Cup Solos Champion Is Swatted During Live Stream

"That's scary."

After his recent win at the Fortnite World Cup Solos Championship, 16-year-old Kyle "Bugha" Giersdorf has had a lot of attention focused on him - not all of it positive. During a recent Fortnite: Battle Royale session that the young member of the Sentinels esports team was livestreaming, he was interrupted after being "swatted," as armed police showed up at his home apparently due to a false report.

The pro player was streaming Fortnite when the police arrived in the middle of a game. In footage of the incident, Bugha is interrupted by his father telling him there are armed police at the door, to which he asks, "I got swatted?" This forced the teenager to leave for around 10 minutes before he returns to tell his friends and fellow pros--Ghost Gaming's Timothy "Bizzle" Miller and FaZe Clan's Danny "Dubs" Walsh--what happened. "They come in with guns, bro," he explains. "They literally pulled up, holy s***. That's scary."

Now Playing: Fortnite Dev Gets Class-Action Lawsuit (Not For B.R.U.T.E. Mechs) - GS News Update

"Swatting" is a form of criminal harassment whereby a false report is filed with the police in the hopes of dispatching armed officers to a person's address. The dangerous hoax has gained unfortunate popularity within the gaming community, most notably on streaming platforms where victims like Bugha are targeted.

Fortunately, the World Cup Winner avoided anything serious happening, thanks in some part to one of the attending officers recognising Bugha due to living in the same neighbourhood.

Others haven't been quite so lucky. A 2017 dispute over Call of Duty led to a "swatting" incident in which a 28-year-old man was shot and killed by police. The man who made the false call was later sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Is it not possible, that if you're at a certain level of popularity on a streaming service, to get in contact with your local precinct and give them some info about the possibility that you might get swatted. Give them a link to your stream, I would think they'd appreciate not just being warned to not waste their time and resources but to have intelligence on what your room set up is and what's going on in there in real time.

@twogirlsonecub: You could do that, but I doubt emergency dispatchers have access to that kind of information. They should, but in my experience, these people have less access to databases than you'd think, plus there is always the possibility someone could bribe a dispatcher to hand out this kind of info.

@twogirlsonecub: Gotta be careful, because what happens when some lunatic actually goes after a popular streamer in person? I mean, they're basically posting where they live.

Gamespot: "Here's a story about some lunatic putting a kid's life in danger over video games. Isn't this horrible?"

You, an EPIC GAMER: "Hahahaha FORNITE tho, amiright?"

There's a time and place, pal. Literally nobody here needs or cares about your opinion on whether or not this kid's game of choice is 'trash' or not. Grow up.

There should be a mandatory 10 year minimum jail sentence for anyone caught "swatting". Not only is this a serious waste of police resources, but it could (and has) lead to someone being injured or killed.

@consolehaven: that one shooting aside, since police have to respond to that kind of report, not much than can do about it. The person making the call should absolutely go to jail for a while.

It is true what the guy below said. I'm retired law enforcement (20 years service, now 53 years old) from a big city, and personally, i've never heard of Emergency Services (our SWAT) being dispatched to such nonsense.

In fact, they're much more dispatched, even an everyday occurrence to get someone out of a broken elevator.

I don't at all want to seem disrespectful to other agencies throughout the country, being i just don't know how they're doing business.

There does need to be some sifting thru these calls before you send the cavalry.

@jagdedge124: I'm ex-military and lots of my friends went to the force after, one of them to a tactical team, they explained how this situation works and they have whole procedures to deal with this nonesense fast and efficiently, zero idea indeed why some stations send in a SWAT team based on some clueless call....

Right, i answered you below in how we would handle it, and you're right, it should take much more before you decide to send in a team like that.

@jagdedge124: Take much more than what? We have ZERO idea what the police were told by the caller in this particular situation, and we don't because they will likely keep it under wraps while they investigate it and look for the guy who made the hoax call.

There's plenty someone who wants to SWAT someone can say to concern the police enough that they send a team of people well trained enough not to go kicking down doors and guns ablazin' without any reason...plenty that they can say to make the police think it would be better to send appropriate people to check, better safe than sorry.

They would do what we did and send a sector car (s) over there first, and make a determination. Not send a whole SWAT team. But that' what they're doing, and probably need a better tact.

@jagdedge124: Not necessarily. If they believe there might be an active shooter event, they're not taking "let's make sure first" half measures, and they shouldn't.

Again, you don't know what batshit nonsense the person told them on the 911 call, how distressed or crazed he made himself sound, whether he spoofed the phone GPS to show up as at the property (this is generally what they do), etc. You can't just apply a one-size-fits-all analysis to it. "I keep hearing shots...there's someone lying on the front lawn unmoving...screaming in the house..." etc. etc. You think the response is "hey, dispatch, tell Frank to take a spin by the house after grabbing our Dunkins to see what's up"??

@Terrorantula: Imagine this situation:

They get a call about a serious threat like this. Then the police brush it aside since it could be potentially a swatter moron wanting attention.

But it turns out it was a serious threat and a bunch of people actually die.

Police can't brush calls like this to the side since it could be a serious threat after all.

Haha, you know you live in a laughable country if some random idiot can call in a SWAT team !!!!! Laughable !!!!! I have no words, no words.....This is how real professional law enforcement goes about it. First, 911 phone operator will check immediately if phone number legit. Anything like blocked number, phone with no real registered address (throw away numbers, etc) will immediately arouse suspicion, same with public phone stations etc, they will want to make sure you call with your home or legit cell phone which they can call you back at anytime for whatever reason and talk with you for however long. Sure, there are walkarounds to that, but hey, it's a start. If that is fine, a Civil/Undercover Police car immediately dispatched while SWAT on passive standby. Undercover will quickly note any suspicious activity (trained for that), and worse case, dressed as postman, gardener, or something (anything really), approach the premises to further assess while in contact with the police station that has a direct line with a SWAT Commander. This whole procedure is cheaper, safer, and more efficient.

But I just have to laugh if I go to the US on holidays, and pick up the phone, call 911 and say "Yo, I need a SWAT team on Idiot Avenue 123 because some geek there is building a bomb to blow up the whole neighborhood", and the dispatch person "Yes, sir, thanks for your report. Do you think we need the FBI HRT on stand by too just in case, or will the SWAT team suffice?". "Actually, call the Pentagon, get Delta Force in here, could be a nuclear bomb", "Yes sir, you are right sir, thanks for the report, we're sending in SWAT and Delta".... seriously, what a joke, all of this, laughable....I mean, there are no words.

Sorry, did not mean to offend, I love the US, but I am getting tired over such news that this joke still keeps happening, if you only knew how much tax-payer money is wasted on a false SWAT deployment, I mean, not to mention so many other problems, factors that occur or could occur....

@phili878: The fact that you think all they said was "yo I need a SWAT team cuz geek something something bomb" completely undermines your entire post. That's nothing but ad absurdum. People who want to do this and get a reaction are obviously making better attempts than that.

https://www.shtfblog.com/swatting-send-a-swat-team-to-a-friend-near-you/

https://www.reddit.com/r/IllegalLifeProTips/comments/89v6tt/ilpt_wanna_swat_someone_root_your_phone_and_set/

You think someone using a masking system and making a claim like "I just heard yelling and gunshots and saw a couple windows get broken while a woman was screaming" or "I just shot my parents and now I'm going to do the neighborhood" gets ignored...laughed at...totally disbelieved...."haha sure kid...that kind of thing never happens and nobody believes you...stop playing on the phone while mommy's not looking"?? Or that they send the least capable/escalated unit if there might be a chance they're walking into something like that? People who are swatting people claim crazy shit in order to assure it will trigger a "better safe than sorry" reaction.

@esqueejy: erm, ok, I guess you do not know what dramatization means, but these days that's the easiest way to actually make an example which people easily understand. Usually also less time involved.

@phili878: Has nothing to do with dramatization. Has everything to do with the gun fetishist ammosexual culture we live in that is resulting in crazy events left and right, from domestic violence to domestic terrorism, and the police being charged with not messing up responding to the potential of something like that happening yet again with the utmost seriousness to keep us safe, not sorry.

@phili878:

It is true, in other jurisdictions they'll send a sector car (s) out first, likely with a sergeant or supervisor, check the situation and go from there. Not just send in a SWAT team. I agree, these jurisdictions may have to look at better alternatives. It risks the lives of the officers, as well as the victim.
