Fortnite Dev Challenges Steam With Competitive Marketplace

This is going to be Epic.

Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, has announced its own marketplace to compete directly with Steam. The Epic Games Store will roll out soon for PC and Mac, with plans to expand to open platforms and Android in 2019. It's already detailing some developer-friendly moves.

The most significant part, for devs, is that they'll earn 88% of their revenue. According to the announcement there are no tiers to the profit-sharing: it's just an 88/12 split between developers and Epic for listing on their marketplace. This is the most striking challenge to Steam, which now takes 20-30% based on a tiered earning structure. If a developer is using the Unreal engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty out of its own 12% cut. Though Epic is encouraging use of its own Unreal engine with profit incentives, it says games developed on any engine are welcome.

Purchasing a game on the Epic store will automatically subscribe players to the game's newsfeed for easy communication, and developers are in charge of their own game page on the news feed. It promises no store ads or cross-marketing on a game page, and no paid ads in the search results.

Epic is also encouraging developers to work with streamers and bloggers, letting them set a revenue share for referrals. Epic says it will cover the first 5% of creator revenue sharing for the first 24 months to help get the ball rolling.

The company promises more details to come at The Game Awards on Thursday.

Unfortunately I'd say you're too late to the game. With 200 odd games in my steam library, you'd need to be offering some pretty substantial discounts for me to jump over. If say this is probably the case with most

@UltimateBastard: So you'd keep using Steam only even if Epic's platform was better, had better prices, etc. because you can't have 2 different platforms installed at the same time?

@Atzenkiller: Like I said, it would need to be some pretty substantial discounts for me to jump over. As a rule no, I don't like using multiple platforms. I do use origin, uplay, but if I can get any of their games on steam, in fact I bought far cry 5 for 10 quid more on Steam than it was going on uplay. I definitely prefer to have all my games consolidated to one platform. I'm sure I'm far from the only one.

Valve have been sitting on their laurels for too long. Steam is a pretty decent platform now with a lot of good features & there is definitely the "I want everything in one place" factor but their sales aren't as good as they used to be & they haven't exactly innovated a lot with their service. The Steam Workshop is nice to have but many mods require the Nexus Mods launcher anyway.

Between Origin, Uplay, Battle.Net & GOG, many people's games are getting split between different platforms anyway, the "everything in one place" excuse is already disappearing so perhaps consumers will be willing to give a new platform a try. They're going to have to give some good incentives to buy somewhere other than Steam though & pricing will be a big factor.

Whether this succeeds or fails, hopefully it will introduce a bit more competition to the market & consumers will win out in the end.

If Epic doesn't allow trash onto their marketplace like Steam does I might support them. There is that whole thing of Tencent owning that I don't like but I feel that sacrifices have to be made to get the message across to Steam that I don't appreciate the hands-off approach they've taken.

Not bad idea, but would like to know how this will work in the long run. No game is in the top forever.

Epic Games are owned by Chinese mega-corporation Tencent, so I wont buy anything from them. I don't want Tencent to have a monopoly on the gaming industry.

Their aim is to take out if possible all Unreal engine content from steam, with those percentages developers will give it a thought , specially the ones from china. If they offer a better way of patching than steam one of the games in their catalog should be Path of Exile, POE on steam is proof on how outdated steam is.

Every bit of competition to steam is welcome, only game i play using steam is dota and not by choice. GoG already shown is a better alternative to steam.

Steam is like Queen Maeve said "a titan with feet of clay" their failure to make steam boxes catch up shows that they have been on their comfort zone too long. And they claimed steam boxes will be on every living room by 2020...

@ballashotcaller: they mean nothing unless you can convince a ton of people to jump across from steam. Even if you're taking 88% of the revenue, if your playerbase is still small, you're not earning much

Just updated to their new UI, and I like it. It's simple, clean, and has an obvious layout. Hybrid hierarchical + tiled layout.

I like the idea of the more revenue going to the developers. This will always help the industry. But All the peasants crying here just because they have to install a few MB software, oh the blasphemy.

@mrbojangles25 epic were copycats when the fortnite BR came out. fortnite was nowhere in the top multiplayer games list. Look at them now and where they are. Epic surely have great strategy for their new endeavour too, you don't worry about that. They are already doing it right by giving the studios and developers by giving them bigger piece of the pie. Battle.net sells their own developed games.

Why would anyone abandon their already convenient steam library, for another launcher? No, thanks. GoG tried it, didn't succeed, no one can challenge Steam, whether or not developers get a piece of the pie, the majority of players are on steam.

What does a developer prefer? 90% of one pie, or 70% of a hundred pies? Waste of time and effort in my opinion.

@alex33x: I wouldn't say GoG didn't succeed, they just don't have the insane success as Steam.

Frankly I think GoG is OK with this. They seem to do just fine doing their own thing.

@mrbojangles25: That's true, but keep in mind that CDproject Red has a very think outside the box mentality. They were smart enough to put their games on Steam as well, they forgo DRM on every single one of their games, and they genuinely care about what their fans think. Epic not so much.

@alex33x: Unless games have to be exclusive to one or the other, this initiative will definitely take some market share away from steam. Given Steams current market share, however, it would be a very long and very expensive and unprofitable venture to want to dethrone them. Steam just has to lower their profit share to match Epic and muscle them right back out.

lol good luck with that Epic.

Maybe they should try "taking on" Origin, GoG, and anything else before Steam. Oh yeah and Battle.net. Can't forget about that behemoth.

We don't need an alternative to Steam (or GoG, or Origin, or...). No one wants an alternative to Steam (or GoG, or Origin, or...). No one asked for this.

The sooner Epic admits they just want a piece of that distribution pie because they can't sell their games (Fortnite excluded...which is free), the sooner we can ignore it.

@kiggor: if they're good, sure, the more the merrier. But I'd rather a meaningful attempt be made by someone who actually cares about the industry, than a shallow cashgrab by a developer who hasn't made a good game in a long time.

The whole "we give a larger percentage to creators" seems like a cheap way to take advantage of a customer's sentimentality.

People forget that Steam is a privately owned company, they don't have to report to some giant mega-corporation like Epic does with Tencent. This means they can be more flexible, and they are; small-scale developers can often ask, and receive, a smaller cut to their profits. Steam actually works with developers and publishers.

I already have Steam, Battle.net, Origin, the Windows Store, and Uplay installed and running on my system. I don't need another !%@'ing gaming service program cluttering my PC.

Between this and all the DLC/Microtransaction crap being shoved down our throats, as well has the legitimately half-assed "AAA" big budget titles that fall face first in terms of quality, I'm really, really disliking the gaming industry.

@kiggor: Let's see, we have.........Nintendo Wii U eshop, Nintendo 3DS eshop, Nintendo Switch eshop (they're all separate because you couldn't transfer things between them!), PS Store, Xbox store, Windows store, Steam, Origin, Uplay, Bethesda.net, Battle.net, GoG, GMG, Gamersgate, Stardock, Google Play, Apple App Store, Direct2Dr-oh wait that's already 17. Wow, that was surprisingly easy.

@Thanatos2k: alright first off most of these you dont even use on PC so why the hell did you mention other consoles? the others like GMG, stardock, direct and gamergate i have never even heard of and google and apple stores are for your phone not pc...... other than that the only things that are actual platforms like steam are origin(which is just EA games) and GoG that sells DRM free games. uplay and bethesda.net is something people shouldnt even have when most of their games are on steam anyway unless its a game that tries to steal your money( aka fall 76) and battle.net is only blizzard and act games and even then they arent a platform like steam. just a simple launcher for their games only. So really you dont have many options to pick other than steam for most if not all games.

@Thanatos2k: no we are talking about pc and how steam is getting competition from epic games by making its own platform for games like steam. this has nothing to do with any console, phone or any gaming service outside of pc.

Yeah yeah, Epic store? Then suddenly every games using epic engine will have DLCs in vbucks....

"No store ads or cross-marketing on a game page, and no paid ads in the search results" how is this different than Steam, GOG?

"Purchasing a game on the Epic store will automatically subscribe players to the game's newsfeed" so you can spam us every day, every hour to purchase garbage items, scamming DLCs? Nope!

"Working with streamers and bloggers". Who the f*ck cares? It always gonna be about those cringey streamers along garbage trending online games instead of a proper good game.

"88/12 split between developers and Epic". But no one says this is forever right? You can change the policy later to suck the hell out of devs.

This is completely unnecessary and pointless, the real reason this store exist is just to cash grab the consumers just like what they did with Fornite. Challenging Steam my ***!

hmmm maybe some day we will see valve make games again because of the need of exclusive games to steam, much like how netflix and amazon prime have their own movies and shows. 1 can hope.
