Fortnite Dev Challenges Steam With Competitive Marketplace

This is going to be Epic.

Epic Games, the makers of Fortnite, has announced its own marketplace to compete directly with Steam. The Epic Games Store will roll out soon for PC and Mac, with plans to expand to open platforms and Android in 2019. It's already detailing some developer-friendly moves.

The most significant part, for devs, is that they'll earn 88% of their revenue. According to the announcement there are no tiers to the profit-sharing: it's just an 88/12 split between developers and Epic for listing on their marketplace. This is the most striking challenge to Steam, which now takes 20-30% based on a tiered earning structure. If a developer is using the Unreal engine, Epic will cover the 5% engine royalty out of its own 12% cut. Though Epic is encouraging use of its own Unreal engine with profit incentives, it says games developed on any engine are welcome.

Purchasing a game on the Epic store will automatically subscribe players to the game's newsfeed for easy communication, and developers are in charge of their own game page on the news feed. It promises no store ads or cross-marketing on a game page, and no paid ads in the search results.

Epic is also encouraging developers to work with streamers and bloggers, letting them set a revenue share for referrals. Epic says it will cover the first 5% of creator revenue sharing for the first 24 months to help get the ball rolling.

The company promises more details to come at The Game Awards on Thursday.

I'm so tired of every publisher forcing players to install yet another launcher these days. This may be theoretically better for publishers but it does nothing but inconvenience players.

@Daian: uplay, rockstar club, bethesda launcher... all this bloatware I swear. Piracy is supposed to be inconvenient, and I found out Farcry 3 has 25 seconds less of load time when cracked/pirated because Uplay version I paid for had a lot of problems syncing irrelevant data.

@santinegrete: i have never seen nor used any of those launchers? those games are on steam. you dont need to use such launchers to play their games. besides actual competition for platforms that are like steam is alway good.

@kiggor: I'm sure it sounds good, but not when they're mandatory and don't work very well. Steam turned DRM into a service and that is good. DRM is not a service to begin with, it's a tool insulting the cash and the purchaser presuming piracy in everyone that wants the game.

@santinegrete: ok but what does this have to with epic games making their own platform when we dont have many that are like steam? competition is never bad and would make steam try harder to keep people on their platform if epic games actually end ups doing well.

@kiggor: more competition is a good point, but if you want to play a game you should only install ONE store platform. You pay to download and start playing, even with Denuvo, not to clutter your regedit and disk with more redundant applications. This is a critic to Ubisoft and the "requires uplay" spec in Steam store.

If one game requires two clients programs that requieres you to also create and account on that, then the service is inconvenient and not worth the salt you pay for.

@santinegrete: that sound like a very small and petty problem to have tbh. having one more platform shouldnt be a issue more so when having more options is good to have. also why would any game use steam and epic games programs to use?

@kiggor: I don't know wich apps I will have to use, but when I pay I expect convenience and support, not DRM and more steps.

@Bread_or_Decide: It actually is not always better. The same thing is happening for television - everyone has started making their own streaming service and walling off their own content into little fiefdoms.

Is this "competition" better for consumers? Nope!

https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/d3q45v/bittorrent-usage-increases-netflix-streaming-sites

Expect gaming to head in the same direction. Competition among products is good for consumers. Competition among PLATFORMS is terrible for consumers.

@Thanatos2k: Not always better? Um I'm pretty sure it always is. It's called capitalism, free market.

@Thanatos2k: Bread_or_Decide's points fail because it think it assumes too well what the consumer actually wants. That's a basic but always present dilemma in anything to do in economy.

@Bread_or_Decide: I think you need to pay attention in school, because you appear to be under the delusion that capitalism and "free markets" are always better, when they have advantages and disadvantages like everything else, and may actually not be good in certain situations.

@Bread_or_Decide: that's just an excuse they use, there are many stores at this point and they've accomplished nothing but be inconvenient in multiple ways.

@Daian: "inconvenient" in this age is having your cell phone battery die on you. It's hardly anything at all.

@Daian: Trust me, you don't want one storefront running everything. It's really not a big deal.

Wow; that IS Epic!

Huge shift in the licensing structures... Man, if I had the time to not be so dependent upon all the readily-available Unity 2D tools, I'd love to take a swing at converting to UE. But oof -- the time that would take...

A bit of competition doesn't hurt. Hoping that GoG can continue to stay up there. This platform seems very developer friendy though.

So basically it will benefit Publishers, with absolutely no intention of lower prices regardless, because they are unquenchable greedy.

What are these guys offering for players over Steam? Seems to be... literally.... nothing.

Getting lots of lots of stores, that are just acting as annoying further sign-ups.

Great, thanks.

@uninspiredcup: Well I don't think Epic can just decide to sell someone's game for less.

@uninspiredcup: Erm, ever heard of self-publishing? Indie games vastly outnumber pubs.

@Eric_Drav3n: It's already installed on 200M systems, so there's that.

Look, I love Steam's UI over all other platforms, but frankly I'm way past caring if games do/don't come with their own. They all get manually terminated post-quit regardless.
