Following Terror Threats, Feminist Frequency Creator Speech at USU Cancelled

1a. "She dismantled Sarkeesians entire basis" - How so? What specific argument dismantles Sarkeesians entire series?

1b. "your outrageously overpriced video series" - I wasn't aware you had seen any of my videos, and nor do I see how they would fit into any of this conversation. Also most of my video's are distributed freely so I'm not certain why you would suggest they are in any way overpriced.

2. My understanding was that Hitman was one of many that had these types of mechanics. Having played GTA, Duke Nukem, Deus Ex Human Revolution, and even Star Wars The Old Republic, I'm fairly aware of the trope she's siting. And although you might be playing the game to be nice to the stripper characters, looking up Hitman Strippers on youtube up should give you a lovely top hit. Game areas have a sandbox element to them. Even though you may only spend 10 seconds in the area, others clearly do not. I think her point is valid, even if you disagree.

3. My critique of Sommers video does not "rip her apart". In fact I found her suggestion of separating out the term gamer into sub groups to be good information, but critique is part of the process of information analysis. I am certain that Sommers is aware of that as she uses it as one of her primary tools. Summers doesn't rest on her laurels, no does critique of her work stop because she's written books and has been around a long time. You can be as outraged as you want by this, but I have no intention stopping critical thinking because you don't like it.

5. Again all seems to be implied, but not directly stated, which is just lazy. If you're going to make a critique of someones work on any sort of professional or academic level you should be as precise as you can and site your sources. That is not what I found in this video. Here are a list of the vague references that may have been talking about Sarkeesian, but could also apply to others:

"Why are the few females always portrayed as either Damsels in distress or sex objects? These critics have made some useful points about “sexist tropes and narratives.” But they ignore the fact that the world of gaming has become more inclusive."

Sarkeesian did acknowledge several times that games have become more inclusive, siting games like Beyond Good & Evil, Thomas Was Alone, Tower Fall, Scary Girl, Knytt Underground, Lili and some of Biowares attempts (with mixed results), so again I assume if Sommers did her homework that the second part of her comment did not apply to Sarkeesian. Although, because Sommers doesn't specifically say who she is speaking about I have no idea who the "They" is.

"But recently two feminist critics received and publicized email death threats."

That's true.

Finally the idea that "they want the male video game culture to end." I find very suspect. Because she doesn't cite anyone in specific I'm not sure who she thinks wants the male video game culture to die. It may be that there is someone out there who would want that, but I have never heard anything from Sarkeesian that suggests she wants male video game culture to die. She repeated states throughout her series that even though she offers critique on the tropes, she still finds many aspects of the games very good.
