First look: Primal

Sony's Cambridge Studio, after having wrapped up the development of C-12, is now busy working on Primal for the PlayStation 2.

Sony Cambridge's new project named Primal is a 3D action-adventure, which, according to the developer, portrays a struggle "between order and chaos, the mortal world and the afterlife." Abaddon, the being of chaos, has grown tired of his personal conflict with Arella, the being of order, and is breaking the balance of nature. As a consequence, the demons of the dark side are gaining strength and power.

In Primal, the player assumes the role of Jennifer Tate. Throughout the course of the game, the player will face demons of an immortal realm and discover Jennifer's own supernatural origins. Jennifer will be experiencing a metamorphosis as she begins to unlock her demonic abilities. At her side is a gargoyle named Scree. The player will be able to switch between the two characters at any point in the game. There will be four separate realms in the game, each inhabited by unique demonic races. The first kingdom is named Solum and is being inhabited by a race named Ferai, a tribe of hunters who base their lives on the natural laws of their environment.

"SCEE Studio Cambridge have created a compelling and original storyline--a dark and violent fantasy for a mature audience," commented Chris Deering, president of SCEE. "They have managed to achieve a level of detail, graphical richness and depth of gameplay that few games will be able to match."

The game will ship in Summer 2002 in Europe. A specific North American release date has not been announced at this time.
