First Dragon Quest 11 Images Showcase a Bright and Beautiful Landscape

See what the latest PlayStation 4 and 3DS entries in the series look like.

Square Enix has released the first batch of screenshots for Dragon Quest XI, which has been announced for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS.

Until now, images of the game have been captured from the livestream during which the publisher announced the game. The new screenshots, however, are captured directly from the game.

The shots, which were posted on Japanese gaming site 4Gamer, show environments from the PlayStation 4 version of the game.

The areas featured in the screens, above, include a marketplace and sprawling field, as well as a dungeon in which the hero can be seen battling Dragon Quest enemies.

The screenshots of the 3DS version, meanwhile, demonstrate its two visual styles. The first is a 3D rendering technique that recent portable Dragon Quest games have used, while the second is a 2D display reminiscent of SNES-era entries of the Japanese role-playing series.

Square Enix officially announced the Dragon Quest XI release on July 25, 2015. Although Square Enix initially confirmed Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest X will be released on Nintendo NX, it did not provide any specific details on this, and later said it was only being "considered."

I think the environment may be a little too realistic, but it still looks great. I doubt we will get this game, seems like it would cost quite a bit to dev., so I dont see why they would keep it in Japan.

@juboner: I just found out about this game.
You're right, the textures they use look realistic. Much like what they did with Dragon Quest Heroes. :-/
I'm glad though that they didn't do the same with the characters.
I was hoping that they'd create hand-painted ones much like in DQ VIII but in higher res or the latest Zelda on Wii U. I'm sick and tired of realistic graphics that dominate games these days.

I wonder if the reason they just chose realistic textures over hand-painted ones is to avoid more time, work = more expenses.

Also, it would be nice though if they created new sprites and tiles for the 2D version on 3DS instead of recycling the ones used in DQ III SNES remake/DQ VII. The enemies also aren't animated. :-/

Still, I'm looking forward to this more than the FFVII Remake!

@Lightposte: I love the art style and to be fair the environment with the waterfall looks great regardless. I want to play all the older games but not sure how to go about it yet. I could buy a dsiXL but might as well spend some more and get 3dsXL so I could play 7 and 8 that are coming out later.

The best version of 3 is on snes, best version of 6 is on ps2. 5 on snes doesnt look so good so that one on DS is probably better. Thing is I have heard the ds remakes are much easier and I dont like that. My first DQ game that I played was 4 on the nes.

Dragon Quest XI, Nier 2, Exist Archive, Final Fantasy XV/7 Remake, Odin Sphere Remake, Persona 5, Star Ocean 5, Disgaea 5 (holy crap that's a lot of 5's). Can't wait! Love the JRPG revolution. If only Japanese devs would start thinking bigger and go multiplat and worldwide....well, sooner or later they will have to. Either that or make their games for handhelds and mobile only. It's their choice, because they sure as hell ain't surviving off Japanese's home console market alone.

@makdan: Well, multiplat as in multiple Sony consoles. I don't really count games that are on PS4 as well as PS3 as multiplats (even though they are indeed on multiple platforms). The only real multiplat on this list is FF XV and possibly 7 Remake.

@makdan: Star Ocan is PS4 only for localization, so it might as well be a PS4 exclusive for non-Japanese gamers. Odin Sphere, yeah. PS3/Vita/PS4. But Nier 2 is only on PS4.

I guess you're not a fan of Akira Toriyama's work or that it's your first time seeing something like a medieval fantasy version of Dragonball.

The game looks amazing. I hope they bring it to the US as FAST as they can. They need to cater to the US fans as I have been a Dragon Quest fan for a long time.

Those PS4 shots look beautiful. That's the kind of scenery that makes me want to explore. Better yet, you can see the monsters off on their own, which indicates that you can avoid them instead of dealing with random encounters! I really hope this comes to the US.

I definitely would play the PS4 version over the 3DS version if it gets localized. The 3DS port of DQ8 looks worse than the PS2 game, making me question the power of that device. Especially since "new" 3DS Xenoblade looks a lot worse than the Wii version.

Even the art style is different. PS4 still looks a bit cartoony but the characters are realistically proportioned (face notwithstanding), whereas the 3DS version, the same character looks like a kid.

@lostn: "looks a bit cartoony"
I know it's been a while since you posted.
I hope the series remain that way.
Realistic graphics dominate most games these days that Dragon Quest Heroes (which used realistic textures) doesn't look that impressive at all for me. Sadly, it's visuals don't stand out from the rest of the current gen games that I've played.

"The 3DS port of DQ8 looks worse than the PS2 game"
What made the PS2 version of DQ VIII look bad?

I guess this is just the first time you've seen an Akira Toriyama character design or it's simply because you hate Dragonball?

@Lightposte: This was an odd Necro.

The PS2 version looked fine. But that was maybe 8 years ago? And the 3DS hardware I'm sure is more powerful than the PS2, so I expected more from it than this.

Cartoony is fine. I wasn't pointing out any problems with. Just noting a peculiarity that the 3DS version looks super deformed (which again is fine because it's going for the cartoony look), and the PS4 version is still cartoony looking, except they gave the characters realistic body proportions.. and I found that an odd choice. Why not keep it SD to be consistent with the 3DS version?

And no, I'm not a Toriyama fan, but that has nothing to do with this discussion.

@lostn: Sorry, your comment just piqued my curiosity. <:-)

I probably just misunderstood what you meant with your comment about the cartoony, anime art style but having realistic proportions at the same time.

It seemed to me that the design choices (cartoony + proportionate) weren't a good match for you.

The first thing that came to my mind when I read that part is; that's how Toriyama's character designs normally look, which is evident in the Dragonball series.

Having said that, I'm now wondering why you find it odd

"and the PS4 version is still cartoony looking, except they gave the characters realistic body proportions.. and I found that an odd choice."

when that's how it has always been drawn by him (the cartoony "but" proportionate designs). All the DQ illustrations were drawn by Toriyama that way, even DQ IX (which becomes SD in the game). This is the reason why I had to mention him in this discussion so I could get an idea about your somewhat "distant" appreciation/understanding of the series' art style. Or it's probably you're just not that familiar with his art style (pardon for my lack of better terms, English isn't my native language.)

"Why not keep it SD to be consistent with the 3DS version?"

Wouldn't it be better if the 3DS version was the one that should conform with the PS4's look?

It would be understandable if they go with the SD designs if it were a NDS game, just like DQ IX. Probably because it isn't powerful enough to handle normally scaled games so they had to "squish" everything.

But since the 3DS can handle even DQ VIII, which uses the normal character designs, surely it would make much more sense if they also use the normal designs on the 3DS version just like the PS4 does.

I'm guessing it's because since it's on a portable device, they also had to make the style look "portable."

@Lightposte: The faces are exagerrated in both versions, but to understand what I meant, just compare footage of the two versions. You'll notice the main character is 'taller' in the PS4 version and shorter in the 3DS. I thought that was an odd choice. That is all.

@xolivierx: i would actually say the oposite, not only the japanese market is shrinking(meaning more and more for western type of games), but i dont doubt some day soon, a tranlator will be made to acomodate each and every language variant, and all J games, will be playable in any language(of course probably text only).

remember, 10-15 years ago, no body was expecting youtube... and it changed the world. same with touchscreens, so just give it some time, we are smart enough to figure it out... unless asteroid happens...

Holy hell. Square, why can't you do this with Final Fantasy? Go back to the magic and style of the older games? This looks amazing. If it's anywhere as good as DQ8, then it's gonna be a contender for GOTG for me.

The game hasn't even been confirmed for a western release, lol. People are excited for nothing. It's a shame though because Dragon Quest is hands down the most beautiful JRPG series and craps all over FF.

@prats93: Would be highly unlikely they don't localize a main series DQ game. DQ10 was an exception because it was an MMORPG and that market is rather volatile right now.
