The next game from the mind of veteran Civilization designer Sid Meier has been revealed. 2K and Firaxis Games have announced Sid Meier's Starships, an interstellar strategy game.

Scheduled to arrive in early 2015, the turn-based game is coming to PC, Mac, and iPad. Pricing was not announced, nor were any details about a possible Android version.

No Caption Provided

In the game, you'll control a fleet of starships as you journey through the galaxy to complete missions, protect planets and their inhabitants, and build a planetary federation.

As you trek through the stars, you'll be challenged to expand your federation's influence and reach. You'll also amass futuristic technology and take part in turn-based combat using a deep roster of customizable ships, some of which you can see in the image gallery above.

2K adds that the missions you'll take on have their own unique maps, featuring "dynamically generated tactical combat" that should boost the game's replayability.

"When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth," Meier said. "What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?"

"My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration."

2K also teases that Beyond Earth and Starships will feature cross-connectivity for people who own both games. The developer isn't talking specifics, but says that this integration will "enhance and expand upon both game experiences."

Starships was developed by Meier and a small team at Firaxis. Check back later this week for an in-depth interview with Meier about his new development team, and lots more.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I bet it's more like turn based Homeworld or Batlefleet Gothic remade as a computer game. I'd expect tactical starship battles mainly. But who knows. This or that way, my hopes are high :P.

A bit racist using an Irish accent to represent nomads.

<< LINK REMOVED >> First, it's an Indian/Pakistani regional accent with some old British Imperial flare thrown in. Maybe that's how you thought it was... Irish. Anyway, it's the voice of the narrator/"protagonist" from Beyond Earth, the girl in the opening trailer.

Second, racism is the belief that one race, (any race), is superior to another/all others. Conversely, it can also be argued that it can mean that one race, (any race), is inferior to another/all others.

The word you're thinking of is "offensive". Racist, prejudiced, discriminatory, and/or bigoted aren't acceptable terms for this perceived insult to the Irish Nomads, or "Travellers", as they prefer to be called.

The parlance of our times has seen these words very often misused, usually to invoke an emotional response. I blame modern day liberals, (that is an example of me being bigoted).

Please, I urge you to make use of your local library and/or the Internet. Knowledge is power.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Firaxis used that over-the-top accent trick in their Beyond Earth trailer too. It drives me up the wall! Marketing types think if they attach a British accent to the narration it somehow makes people think it's smart and sophisticated or something. PBS in the US does the same thing in their science documentaries. Frankly, I think it shows a lack of confidence and creativity on the part of the writers. In this context it's especially grating because distinct regional accents can only survive in isolation. The notion that a people that have traveled across the galaxy from earth would still maintain an isolated regional accent is rubbish.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> What does an American even sound like? Just like Britannia, Americans have many distinct local accents: New Yorker, Bostonian, Mainer, Southern, Texan, Cajun, Minnesotan. California seems to be one area without a distinct regional accent if you ignore the trendy surfer dude/valley girl stuff that comes and goes. It seems the heaviest local accents have the oldest communities and slowest immigrant influx and vise versa. Much recent population growth in Texas has seen a similar reduction in the Texas "drawl". It's still heard in small rural towns but Houston sounds like Anywhere, USA.

Some people in broadcasting have coaches to help them dispel their regional voice patterns in their speech. It's called "accent-neutral". A lot of interesting things about accents.

<< LINK REMOVED >> What's negative about being a nomad or being Irish? Maybe this accent is nothing racist and YOU'RE being racist for implying an Irish nomad is, somehow, insulting.

Cool, but it would be nice to see some gameplay as well. Master of Orion 2 is still unbeaten for best space sci-fi turn-based strategy/diplomacy game in my opinion.
