The next game from the mind of veteran Civilization designer Sid Meier has been revealed. 2K and Firaxis Games have announced Sid Meier's Starships, an interstellar strategy game.

Scheduled to arrive in early 2015, the turn-based game is coming to PC, Mac, and iPad. Pricing was not announced, nor were any details about a possible Android version.

No Caption Provided

In the game, you'll control a fleet of starships as you journey through the galaxy to complete missions, protect planets and their inhabitants, and build a planetary federation.

As you trek through the stars, you'll be challenged to expand your federation's influence and reach. You'll also amass futuristic technology and take part in turn-based combat using a deep roster of customizable ships, some of which you can see in the image gallery above.

2K adds that the missions you'll take on have their own unique maps, featuring "dynamically generated tactical combat" that should boost the game's replayability.

"When designing Starships, I was intrigued by the idea of exploring the next chapter in the story of Civilization: Beyond Earth," Meier said. "What happens after we colonize our new home and eventually build starships to take to the stars? What has become of our long-lost brothers and sisters from the planet Earth?"

"My goal was to create an experience that focuses on starship design and combat within a universe filled with interstellar adventure, diplomacy, and exploration."

2K also teases that Beyond Earth and Starships will feature cross-connectivity for people who own both games. The developer isn't talking specifics, but says that this integration will "enhance and expand upon both game experiences."

Starships was developed by Meier and a small team at Firaxis. Check back later this week for an in-depth interview with Meier about his new development team, and lots more.

Could be Sid Meier's Ace Patrol, but in space. I'd be down for that, those were some great games.

This reminds me of the teaser\trailer of Civ: Beyond Earth. No, not conceptually. Just the fact that there are no shots of the actual gameplay interface and the fact that you can watch the whole thing without having a clue of what genre the game is in, or even that it's a video game.

I mean, it's their choice if they want to tease with that video and give the gameplay information in screenshots and text, but that feels a lot less engaging, at least to me, compared to say the Smash Bros trailers where they would show some video but then follow it up with actual gameplay footage.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah but there was tons of Gameplay footage, livestream events and playthroughs of Beyond Earth before it was released. If you really didnt know what you were getting into before buying BE you really didnt do any research. They're most likely going to do the same with this title, since that has been their Marketing strategy since Civ V

It kinda reminds me of Galactic Civilization and some mod for Civ4. Looking to play it. Let's just hope it won't be a reskin of an existing game, like Civ:BE was a reskin of Civ5.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I was thinking the same thing. Seems kinda strange of them to bring out another title so close to the last game, especially considering a new GC is already in development.

Me personally, I prefer RTS over turn-based. With Grey Goo coming this week, the Homeworld remaster coming in February and Legacy of the Void also coming this year, I dont know if I can fit this game in.

I got the chance to play Beyond Earth for a dozen hours or so this weekend. It's not bad; it just feels tired. After I played, I had an image of a middle aged man sprinting toward Alpha Centauri from Earth, getting tired after a bit and just sat down.

I've had a few thoughts after reading the scant details here. There is something inherently wrong with dynamically generated tactical combat in a strategy game. A deep roster of customizable ships is not in of itself impressive. As far as the next chapter of the Beyond Earth "story," I'll be blunt. Sid Meier's vision of Beyond Earth is bland, and there is no real personality in BE to motivate a story.

Positioning, when it matters, is a huge deal in war. I'd rather carefully position my forces in the long run directly on the strategic map than to start out on equal footing as my opponent and try to maneuver on a tactical map. If I've already created a decisive advantage strategically, then instead of a dynamically generated tactical map, I just want a sensible Quick Resolve button. In short, if Starships is a tactical game, so be it; if it's a strategic game, I don't want to constantly demean myself to the tactical level, with randomness killing my game when I actually try to do something clever tactically.

The way the customization is integrated into research, resources, and manufacturing is the real key. For a fine example, look no further than SMAC. As far as cosmetics go, it's better to just release a tool for the players to make their own looks; I'll just use the default color scheme.

There is generally no story to be had in the broad premise of a group of people building their home in a new land. The stories come from individual experiences and events. Although there were a few instances of these stories in BE, they are largely not fleshed out and only minimally relevant to the gameplay. To make matters worse, I don't think the faction leaders in BE count as characters. I didn't even bother to deal with them in my one game. To have a next chapter, Meier needs a story, and that means remaking (or making, I guess) the whole cast.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Not if its the size of a Galactic Civilization game. How the hell would that be even possible. Load screen as you tried to go planet side to load up the big Civilization sized world? Managing a space empire and having to go planet side every time with all the load screens, would be a HUGE pain in the ass...not to mention it would wreck your RAM. It would be the biggest fail expansion ever. Much better to make it its own game,

Firaxis has serious competition in the sci-fi 4x scene. Endless Space, Galactic Civilizations, Distant Worlds and many others are prominent now, and a good year for the genre in 2014 may mean more shots at it in the near future. Firaxis needs to get this very right.
